We are, until we get into the RZ, in which then when the field gets smaller we get shut down. We ran quite well out of the I. We should have passed well out of it too, but the throws were not very good and the PA was even worse. The issue I have with our PA is we NEVER let Brad keep one. Even if its a gain of one.. but if you ever want to keep that backside DE from crashing down on plays and tackling guys from behind you need to do something to keep them honest... That and our pass blocking is just plain brutal......
All in all there is enough there to work with. I think CMR just needs to get BK in a rhythm early and then let that dictate the game. But between the Pick and the big drop from Njoku on that 3rd down, BK never threw a really nicely placed ball. And if you look at that pass where he overthrew Coley, you can see him trying to will it in there when in fact he had no feel for that ball. He was searching for that one pass that had him feeling it again and never really got there... BK has plenty of talent, now its just the head game he needs to tighten up...
We were much better running the ball out of the spread. The I-formation gave us 8/9 defenders in the box and our O-line isn't built to run against that.
I didn't see us get shut down in the redzone with the spread, I saw us score easily.
Did you watch any games last year? We sucked in the spread in the red zone. Walton first Td was out of spread, his second was from under center, his third was from spread but was a super human effort by him to make unblocked defenders miss, and his fourth was also from under center. Just watched a highlight and we basically had success running the same two plays with him..lol Which is not a bad thing. I just kind of chuckled when I realized the runs all kind of looked the same.
I will admit, I am a huge fan of the I, but I also recognize that players are learning in the spread now and good coaching is playing to your players strengths...
I do not have to be right, I think we are really predictable in the spread IMO. And it seems so far we hare having successes and failure in both. I am excited to see it progress. Seems like CMR has a good pulse of handling defensive looks and playing to strengths
