Romberg-James Interview

reluctant to pull the trigger because if ZO improves the football then the credit goes to him and not James and it opens up the possibility for James to be replaced by the guy he hired.

No it doesn't. James would get the credit for hiring Highsmith—so that would be a resume win for him. Not to mention, he's in the BoT's good graced as a fundraiser and glad-handler.

Some of y'all really don't get that an athletic director's job is way more than just football head coaching hires. By many other accounts, James is doing a fine job—regarding an AD's title—and is well-liked by UM's top brass.

There's literally no way he wouldn't hire Highsmith because that type of football success would ultimately get hire fired. Completely non-sensical.

When Brett asked him what he thinks of the petitions about firing him I almost lost my **** 🤣🤣

That means he would have had to be prepared. Not sure if you listened to him on 790. The guy was never prepared but always ready to talk about "back in my day".
I have been trying to listen to "Lazlow and Amber" or whatever the names are. I wanted to get an update while I am here at work. However, I had to turn it off because she and the other dude are just horrible.

Ok, honestly you have a good point with this post and that makes sense. What other reason would James have not to hire Highsmith? I can understand within the confines of the contract Diaz agreed upon him reporting to a middle man was not a part of the agreement.

Nope. Highsmith has no interest in supervising women’s badminton. He has no interest in selling tickets, begging boosters for donations, nor dealing with NCAA compliance issues. He has no interest in 99% of Blake’s job. He is only interested in improving the performance of our football team on the field. There is plenty of administrative work for Blake and Jen Strawly, or whatever her name is.

There are a lot of people at the U including Blake and Manny who seem to be comfortable with whatever they have been doing and don’t want alphas like Zo and Mario to come in and rock the boat. There is a lot of pressure on Blake to do something though. Hiring Zo will be easier for Blake than firing Manny.

Okay...this interview blew. I think Romberg did a lot of tough guy talk the day after the bowl game but not a lot of follow through here. No press on the hiring of Manny and why no other candidates were considered, no press on why Alonzo can't be given more authority, no press on if the BOT is pressuring him to make the move. Missed some easy points IMO

Blake dodged the question when Romberg asked him about Manny not wanting an Alpha around to be over him or he has to answer to.

Again Romberg should have pressed BJ on the structure of the new role. Why hire an OC before a chief of staff if the COS role? That should have been a core discussion topic, instead Romberg tried to make it an Ellen interview.

Missed opportunity IMO.

As he should. That's a bull**** question for a legit media person to ask the AD.

Had Romberg asked about how the new position would be structured and how it would interact with the coaching staff would have been way more productive from an informational standpoint.

I personally wouldn't have asked a single question about the Highsmith stuff. I'd focus it all on Blake.

I'd bring up the school's dismal record since he took over. Why shouldn't he be held accountable?

I'd ask him to again explain why he did not conduct a search when Richt retired?

I'd ask him if he realizes that Mannys defense is 1-2 and given up 83 points in Bowl games at Miami. This is the guy you thought was the best option ?

I'd ask him what qualities he looks for in a Head Coach?

I'd ask him is there a vetting process for assistant coaches ?

I'd ask him why this season turned into a rebuild when part of your rationale for hiring Manny was continuity?

I'd finally ask him what he considers a successful season at UM?

Sometimes these guys end up telling on themselves.

What makes no sense to me is that James has to realize that bringing Zo in buys him a lot of time, because if anything goes wrong he can deflect the blame and pressure to him. But for some reason he’s still reluctant to pull the trigger on this.

Not to mention how absolutely irresponsible, from a business standpoint, it looks not to hire a guy who was front office for the Packers and Browns and is one of our own?!?! Now if he is demanding an untold fortune, fine.....but I bet that isn't the case.
