Roman - Bama Film Review

They have a talent advantage but we were 100% out coached in this game. It was like and NFL staff going against a HS staff. Lashlee was the biggest disappointment.
There is just as big a gap in coaching talent as player talent between us and Bama.

Bama is a semi-pro team with the best athletes money can buy to go along with the best coaching, shear number of coaches/analysts, and facilities. They are a machine. Probably have lost 10 games in 10 years b/c of it.

Disappointed Roman wasn't able to go a bit more into the long 94 yard play. His insights are great and would have loved to hear him talk about the QB holding Hall between Metchie and Williams. I'll give a quick breakdown for those interested. Roman mentioned Gurvan and that "someone was in man coverage." There are multiple shots of what happened on that play.

Misery 1 - Alignment.png

Gurvan is outside of the boundary hash to the bottom of the screen (you can see him in the bottom left at about 14 yards). Couch and Ivey are in Man coverage. The two primary vertical threats highlighted are likely 20 yards apart.

Misery 2 - Post snap.png

If I'm not mistaken, Roman mentions there's "a little bit of a double move" on the play. I didn't see the double move. Bama's Williams easily releases inside and runs by his defender (Ivey) on his way to the corner (top left of the screenshot).

Misery 3 - Smoked.png

Gurvan is in the bottom left corner of the screen. Still in his backpedal with eyes on QB. He's still split between two vertical threats - Williams and Bama's super dynamic #8, Metchie (toward the bottom right of the screen, trailed by Couch). Williams has already begun his corner attack, and has already created significant separation from Ivey.

Misery 4 - Late.png

The ball is now released (in air). Hall stutter stepped out of his backpedal and I think some would fairly say he was a step late to decide to cover over the top and didn't get enough depth. He remained outside the boundary hash when he should have (in hindsight) probably moved toward the hash. I'm not sure he gets 100% responsibility on this one. Ivey is quite literally 4 yards behind. That's 12 feet. I'm not sure Sean Taylor gets to this ball over the top and protects Ivey (while protecting Couch against Metchie). Yes, there are certainly pre-snap alignments and better steps that could have been made, but this is overall (a) a good/simple design, (b) late reactions/processing, (c) overmatched Corner. Put that together with a nice throw and you have a 94 yard pitch and catch.

*By the way, for those of you wondering, this play had some (not all) similarities to Amari Carter lining up on the boundary hash against UF and Frierson getting bombed out of the field side slot by Franks.

Spilled milk but our DE was held bad on this play.

I saw. We yelled it live during the game. I'm not sure this type of coverage works against Bama-level talent without a Gerald Willis-type talent disrupting the middle of the OL. Hey, we have a 5-star True Frosh who's being talked about as that kind of upfield disruptor. Would have liked to see him given a shot.

@PIPO so in your personal opinion do you still think that we could win 10 games?? I also think that lashlee is going to have to do a better job of couching. What do you think off many as a defensive coordinator now vs the best and is he the right coach?
You have like 3 loaded questions here, 😂😂 I hope we win 10 games. we have to!! Do I think we will? No! I see 9 wins as we will lose a game we shouldn’t and Manny will ride out next year, hopefully as a make or break year with no contract extension.

I can’t believe I am saying this but I was more impressed with FSU than UNC but don’t want to overreact to one week. Except for FSU & UNC, we play everyone else decent at home. Michigan State in the middle of a south Florida afternoon, that’s the barometer game for me.

Agree with you on Lashlee.

Manny is a good DC vs mediocre to bad teams. Versus every elite team, he is bad as the stats show (ND was a long time ago) and his scheme needs evolving & change.

Is he the right coach? No, but he could prove us wrong by finishing strong. He only wins 8, he should be gone. He wins 9, he will probably get next year but he better not get that extension. I’d rather he be fired than extended with the current results.
His heart & mind wants nothing but success for the U to be back.

But their are more knowledgeable posters on here that can speak to this and have (@Coach Macho, @Liberty City El, etc).

Good breakdown, but a little bit annoyed he didn't highlight the stranglehold the Alabama RT had on our DE for that 94 yard TD pass.

They're a supremely talented bunch - bought and paid for - but holy **** do they cheat a lot.
That and the PI on Redding got me. Takes away 14 points between that and the 94 yard TD. Look I don’t see any scenario where we could even fathom winning that game, but there was a lot of blatant garbage going on… and nobody cared.

RT hands high.webp

Here's the Bama RT with his hands high. Live, I thought it was holding. On replay, looks more like hands to the face. I don't expect calls, so I'm at a point where I just ignore non-calls.

No sugarcoating; it exposed how unadaptive this staff is.
I mean yes and no.

Even if you're the smartest guy in the room, if the other team has triple the people working on the same problem over several months you're ****ed.

This is why Alabama is the juggernaut it is. Not only do they recruit (buy) and develop the best talent, but they have dozens and dozens of analysts (failed ex-HCs sitting out their buy out) picking apart their next opponent. It's ridiculous.

Rell we knew that bruh.. We knew Shoop wasn't going to change manny. I was saying for months I don't trust manny. I just want this guy to be canned. I gotta sit through another season or two.

I don’t think Ro sugar coats anything. He only posted one good play for Miami. The X TD catch
Which was a GREAT effort by X. He probably doesn't grab that one 8x out of 10. The coverage was that tight.

He makes a great point on Lashlee’s tempo hurting more than helping. Bama was snapping late so they could get the right protection in place. We are snapping early and the OL have to diagnose on the fly.

Question - why would our best cover corner - TS - be on the sideline on this play on 3rd & 5 from deep in our territory?

This play is embarrassing for two reasons.

1. Why are you playing Cover-1 and not sending pressure? That makes no sense. A double A-gap pressure would've been nice here. Make him get the ball out. This route would've never had time to bust open.

2. Why is Gurvan Hall on the boundary hash instead of MOF?
If Hall is aligned at MOF then he can prevent this touchdown.
