RIP Mike Ditka

It’s kind of amazing to think that Ditka (and Jordan to a lesser degree) pretty much inspired what became a successful SNL skit for a long time.

Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) came up with the original concept in 1983, and then worked on it with Bob Odenkirk pre-SNL (Odenkirk was from Naperville and gave insights on pronunciation). They first did the whole "panel" of guys in 1988 in an improv, and then did it for the first time on SNL in 1991.

Buddy had a seat at the table waiting for him. Now they can go and argue about football up there. Sad day for football. Generational player and a great man.

Smigel and Odenkirk are amazing. Triumph is a gift.

So Smigel had the idea before the Bears won the Super Bowl?

Yeah, he came up with the idea before the Bears won the Super Bowl, but it didn't turn into a full-fledged comedy routine until later.
