Richt on clemson dline lol

I know everybody likes to assume those guys stayed because of the ahem...incentives but do you really think these Clemson boosters are dishing out first round contract amounts of money just to keep guys in school? I mean at least one, probably two of Clemson's D-linemen are 1st round picks. I can't imagine they're getting millions from boosters.

This. The notion that they turned down being first round picks because of all the money and *** they are getting at Clemson is head scratchingly dumb.

It's gotta be the SLIDE!!

So their guys need a playground? Wait till one of them goes down the slide & twists their ankle or some other freak accident occurs....LMAO

No, but a deal is a deal.

Their mama's have been getting their checks every month for years - and all they gotta do is stay in school one more year - and mama will continue to get her checks. THEN they can still go higher in the draft by honing their skills, getting more reps, and accumulating a greater bulk of work.

Paying players works. when it's a multi-year process. Gotta get mama accustomed to those monthly checks for a few years - and to ***** mama over by jumping early into the draft? That would be criminal behavior!

But the inverse of that argument is if you are a projected first round pick, pretty sure the spread this year was $33 mil contract with a $22 mil signing bonus for number 1 overall pick and $9.5mil with a $5mil signing bonus for the 32nd pick. But moms is worried about her light bill being paid? The money aspect just doesn't make sense... even timing, a few months? and that assumes after the senior year they will get paid until draft day? And once you declare can't you start marketing yourself, promos, endorsements etc.?

Unless they had something to hang over their head, or perhaps they all decided to come back where if one jumped ship the other would have followed (Kendrick and RJ) or I am going to second the mounds of *** theory because I got nothing else.

The mounds of *** theory is as dumb as the money theory. A first round multi millionaire NFL draft pick is not going to be suffering from a dearth of *****.

They came back to win a championship.

I'm not sure how many times I've seen a sure thing first or second rounder - and they fell well below those projections on draft day.

There are no sure things. But if someone has faithfully been making monthly payments - one can reasonably assume they will continue.

I can't think of many folks who would not benefit from their senior year of playing football. They have more experience, they have better technique that they can finesse further, and have one more year of maturity before going head to head with the big boys.

There's really no downside to playing your senior year.

You're only looking at it from the back end - you're not considering where these kids and their mama's were on the front end - and who's been helping them all these years.

But they are.

Ok, for the sake of argument let's say they do slip into later rounds. You realize the MINIMUM salary in the NFL is still approx 500k correct? Feel it is safe to say the kid(s) would have been drafted... And if you think Clemson is paying that per year? I am not sure there is much more I can do.

And no downside to playing your senior year??? Aside from a litany of external factors that could impact draft stock of a senior such as coaching changes, scheme changes, personnel changes or having a more talented draft class at that specific position, I feel a few ACL's would beg to differ....

Dude - I'm not saying it's not sitting there. You're looking at it from a quicker payday perspective - and they aren't.

Besides - the money is still going to be there - it's just a year difference. They may be grateful for the assistance the previous three or four YEARS, and maybe they want to honor the deal in full.

No, if you're highly rated - there is no downside to playing your senior year. As far as ACL's - they have some significant insurance policies to cover such contingencies - AND - they still can have surgery, and STILL get into another draft.

If you're really good - you'll be given a year to get even better. Maybe mama wants him to get his degree. Maybe she wants her checks AND for her son to get his degree, AND get another year under his belt.

Everyone has a button to push - but if you've had those buttons pushed for three or maybe four years - it's easy enough to push those buttons for one more year.

It's naive to think they're not getting something to stay. The one thing I haven't seen brought is the option that perhaps they have "deals" with agents that provide a much larger "slide" than the one the school has.

IMO Richt doesn't make that comment if somethings not fishy. One guy sure, two guys maybe, three guys....

Meh, if a guy really wants to leave he is going to. There's no way any bagman is giving them anywhere near the amount of money they'd make by being an NFL draft pick especially a first one second rounder. Now, a very possible and far more believable scenario is: Player X knows he's a possible first round pick but really wants to finish school and/or make a title run with his team. Having that extra bag man money to lean on makes that decision a lot easier. Player Y is in the exact same scenario except he doesn't have that bag money. Bill's may be piling up, maybe he's got some family hardships, whatever. He's gotta jump to the draft no matter how much he wants to return for unfinished business.

Maybe they wanted to come back because the Sugar Bowl game left a bad taste in their mouth.
They know what it is like to slay the Bama dragon and they have one more chance to do so.

I should be surprised our fans(I use that term loosely) are in here white knighting for Clemson but I'm not.

Yea those guy just stuck around for the college experience. "Who needs millions of dollars, I've got a frat party to get to and a Sociology test on Monday that I'm just so excited about."

Or wait, it's that they want to win a 2nd championship instead of getting guaranteed 1st round money? If you think that's how these kids think, I've got some beachfront property for you to check out in WV.

“Dude”- you have no idea what perspective they are looking at. But your reasoning flies in the face of the normal thought process of any third year highly ranked player.

Will the money be there next year? Likely, but that doesn’t stop people like Kendrick and RJ from staying, so again it is against the norm.

Concerning insurance policies, this is also something you are just assuming. If you tear your acl you will drop in the draft. Look at the Michigan TE from last year. You also assume another year players automatically get better and won’t regress.

Concerning the degree, again you are going against what the norm is. Andre Johnson’s Momma wanted him to get his degree. He left early and came back for summer classes and got it.

You said yourself you have seen sure fire first rounders fall so I’m assuming you meant just underclassman? Because if that’s the case they could slide their senior year as well.

You are assuming these kids are genuine wholesome let’s go win a natty together and hone our skills and turn down millions now for those same millions later. Is that a possibility? Yes. Is it what typically happens. No.

What's your point? Why did they come back then?

Not a single one of their 3 DL got a first round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory board. They wanted first round money and so they came back.

Not saying they aren’t getting extra benefits, but they didn’t turn down first round money. The crazy thing is our DL got 5-7th round grades and still decided to go now that’s just bad decision making.
