I like to look at stats and history, so I was looking for signs on how we can turn this thing around (outside of fire the coach, or hire an OC)
2010 - Georgia started 1-4, and ended up 6-7. 2011 they finish 10-4. 2012 they finish 12-2 and take almost beat Alabama to go to the NC.
So Richt has turned a complete disaster around somewhat quickly before. So I'm looking for similarities between 2010 Georgia and 2018 Miami.
1) QB - Richt started RS Fr Aaron Murray, stuck with him, and let him take his lumps during a 6-7 season. It looked Perry was going to be the same thing, but that got sidetracked. He needs to decide who his QB of the future is now, if it's Perry or Williams, and ride him out for the season.
2) Recruiting - Here's how they were ranked in recruiting on 247.
Georgia:
2009 - 4
2010 - 11
2011 - 7
2012 - 9
Miami:
2015 - 27
2016 - 22
2017 - 12
2018 - 8
I've said since Day 1 Richt should be judged as a recruiter, not a coach. As a coach, he is who he is. But as a recruiter, he's always been one of the best. He can still be successful here if he packs the team with enough talent to overcome his coaching shortcomings. And he's in the best area of the country to do that.
BUT....he has to recruit Top 10 type classes consistently. He's done that so far. The talent of the 2017 & 2018 classes will pay off when they're upperclassmen IF he can also bring in successful classes this year and next.
What I think is now more important than our final record this year is:
1) Pick your QB. Hope he shows flashes the rest of the year, even if he makes mistakes, but also show confidence in that QB. It'll be easier to sell recruits on Miami if we've already got a QB that both the coach and recruits believe in.
2) The 2019 recruiting class is currently ranked 22nd. The 2020 class is currently ranked 1st. This is where Richt earns his paycheck for me. It's an absolute must that he bring in the 2019 class at least close to a Top 10 class.
If we can do those 2 things I'll like where we're at, despite this being season being a trainwreck.
