Rewatched the tape...I think it can be fixed.

Some thoughts:

1.Poyser and Chase Smith were absolutely HORRIBLE in zone coverage and in pursuite/space tonight. Chase Smith plays way too upright in space and Poyser is way to stiff. What this staff sees in playing Poyser at free safety - when he should be playing strong safety or nickel - I will never know. He is no Jakobe Thomas, and he needs to play in coverage in shorter zones and in the box. Man on man, he would do fine against tight ends whereas Dunnigan was horrid in man coverage tonight.

2. Bryce was lost tonight because they've been playing him all over the field: I saw him at field corner, nickel, and ss. He needs to lock down the free safety/center field position in this cover three scheme; he needs to watch things unfold from the middle because he is not being utilized effectively right now, and Poyser is a complete liability in cover three back there (too slow to react).

3. Dunnigan played poorly except at blitzing, setting the edge, and crashing down on runs from the backside tonight: he was poor at tackling, poor in man coverage, and a bit lost in zone. His run fits were good, but he is a work in progress (slow at processing) in the passing game.

4. Blount is not very good - way too stiff and frequently lost the edge/got pushed inside. Lightfoot was turned inside to to a lesser extent as well. Blount needs to gain weight and play DT.

5. Wilson needs to play more downs, and be allowed to just rush with less thinking.

6. Lightfoot is our best edge by a mile and needs to play every down; we are really missing Hayden Lowe's potential. As a side note, Lightfoot needs to stop flicking people off on camera lol.

7. The OL played an elite-level game, and ran the ball at will when needed - what more can you ask for?

8. Special teams were also good/fine.

9. The refs called a good, fair game. They made all of the right calls on those onsides. If the refs treated us like they did in years passed, we lose. Whatever has changed, I like it.

Really curious to see how we bounce back, and what changes are made.

Interesting you think it can be fixed when it’s a talent issues but I agree on the issues.

Blount is a non factor at DE. Not sure if his ankle is still an issue but he is struggling to make an impact.

Wilson agreed just let him free and see what happens.

Poyser has been really bad. He can’t play zone. He is graded the worst safety in America at zone. This is why the defense is stuck. They don’t have guys who can run zone and not talented enough to play man.

Fitz im not sure what to do with him. He has talent but where is his best spot.

JJ is doing the best he can. He has been thrown to the wolves this year.

Chase had a really rough game. Have to see what Marcelin or others can do at LB on passing downs.

Scott finally showed up but need more from the DT overall.

ESPN showed lightfoot flipping off the other team so maybe they gets him sat down. Don’t need a 15yd penalty over dumb stuff .

Offense had their way. They will have to win every game from here on out.

Lucas must be hurt still cause I saw Brown in a lot in the 2nd half.

Petrino took Heatheman to school. That was about a bad of a coaching mismatch I have seen seen in a very long time.

Miami needs OJ or Antoine back but doesn’t seem like either are close.

Ryan Mack ain’t it. He got eaten alive in man coverage.

Miami will have to be **** near perfect on offense to get by ND, Duke and Tech. Hold on tight November is going to be a dog fight

I said it in another thread. When Etheridge left, I said that it would be a huge loss for us, and so I hate to have been correct. He was our passing game coordinator and had our DB’s always in the right places and playing freely.

Our DB’s now look completely lost on every play. The communication is very poor, and they are always out of position and often not even on the TV screen when balls are being caught. The ball skills that were so evident last season are now almost nonexistent. That goes to coaching.

Need to hire a new CB coach and find a spot for Jefferson on staff to stay cause of his recruiting

This was Poysers worse game by far.

I honestly think we got too many guys playing outta position in the secondary. Along with missing much better tacklers and just smarter veteran players from last year’s defense.

Add in our DEs just can’t seem to get there any where near what we need to help make up for how bad this DB room is looking.

Team lost 4 guys to the nfl and don’t have the talent to replace them. Major downgrades at all spots that lost talent plus losing the CB coach.

Went from Thomas to Poyser or whoever you see the safety spot.

Lost Scott and replaced him with Thorton. Major major downgrade. Scott is playing great ball as a rookie in the nfl.

Bain and replaced him with Blount who is not doing anything.

Mesidor and now have lightfoot. Lightfoot has played really well but still a slight downgrade.

Then you went from Wes and down to a slower Chase Smith.

Now add in all the injuries and the secondary and it’s ugly.

Blount is an excellent defensive end and we’re not missing anything in Lowe because none of us know what the **** he would’ve been anyways. I stopped reading after that. SMH but I do agree with you on the offensive line, they played an excellent game last night.

How many times we going to see the same bs before we make changes if the real question

I think we might have a DB coaching problem.

I think it’s very fair to look at the db coaching just as much as heatherman

Granted we played spot drop alot last year, and there is more film now but our dbs got picks and a bunch of pbus last year, forced tight window throws. This year guys are just wide the **** open

I really thought H.Lowe was going to be an impact player this year, he will be for somebody next year. I think D.Wilson is playing dinged up as his play in his $$$ year is so different form his time at UGa & Missouri...... lots of work to do next week

Imagine when we actually play a good QB / offense
Who?

OSU- no
Indiana- no
Ole Miss - may not make it
UGA- Stockton is meh
Texas- arch depends on if he is hot or cold
BYU- may not make it
Utah - dampier is good but
ND- we find out next week. Remember, nd was up 1 at half to 2-6 Navy. They also had a dog fight with Unc. They lost to byu.

College football today isn’t the same. Miami’s offense is the only sure thing I’ve seen. Yes, we really need oj back. We need Lucas to be 100%. We need the DL to show up more than 1-2 drives. I suspect the kids weren’t focused on 1-0 but the offense dominated and defense did just enough.

How many “meh” QBs have had a career best game against us this season? All of them?

#9.... Here's a thought... The reason we lost a lot of games is because the refs treated us like trash in the past. Last night they called a fair game. That's all I ever wanted in the sport. Losing is one thing, but losing because you get cheated is another. We were cheated plenty the last 20 years.

You list a lot of problems - I was expecting you to lay out how you think things would get fixed lol

I think we might have a DB coaching problem.
Been saying this since we lost etheridge to the NFL and replaced him with someone who has no experience at this level. Should of hired a experienced db coach. I dont want miami to be anyone's first coaching gig with the exception of maybe rb coach where you can kinda get away with that

All the teams you just named have way more talent on offense than UNC or Florida state

we also did fine against one of the best already. Wake’s QB is ahead of almost every CFP team’s qb we could face. The best QBs aren’t on elite teams or are hurt(sayin moore taylor…). Russell at bama is good but inexperienced and bama isn’t Sabin Bama.

I’m not saying we are an elite defense. I’m saying our team matches up well with everyone because our offense is that much better and our D can do enough.
