REPORT: Miami HIRING Favien Upshaw at RB Coach

I have no idea if Favian Upshaw will be great or terrible at Miami.

But there is a ****-TON of cope in this thread.

Let's be honest, the resume is wafer-thin. I hope he will be great. But everyone concluding that this is a great hire (after Googling the guy and figuring out who he is) is just...

...funny...

That's all.

Go Canes!

Hard for anyone to actually judge this, but on paper seems a bit odd/a little underwhelming. When we hired Merritt, he had a legit track record of coaching running backs at the collage level, so it's a bit surprising to see us now hire someone with such little coaching experience and zero real experience recruiting in a year where there is a lot of work to do on the recruiting front at the position. Pure speculation, but hard to imagine that this guy was one of our top choices.

Mario really is vengeful and petty. Da*m you NFL for taking my RB coach. Now I will take one of yours.

J/k of course. But what this tells me is that our methodical coach engages in an extremely thorough search. I am also 100% certain that none of us CIS college football experts had a clue who Favian Upshaw was as of February 25, 2026.

Maybe, just maybe, we will remember to leaving the coaching in the future to the people who are actually paid to coach because they have expertise in coaching and the greatest motivation to do well. That is until we lose a game and we all become smarter than the coach.
Previous Miami coaches would have been lazy and hired Clinton Portis.

If I’m Upshaw, I’m aiming for the same trajectory as Merritt — recruit and develop at Miami for a few seasons, then take an NFL RB job when one opens up.

I don’t get complaining abt this. Is his resume on the lighter side, yes. But getting a young NFL guy who was just interviewing for a NFL position coach spot, I’ll take it. We already have the room stacked with proven talent. I think he’ll be good, but RB coach is not the spot I’m worried abt either way.

I remember when Brady was only a offensive asst. for Sean Payton staff and Orgeron bought him in, he got a ton of pushback also.. Then he took off from there..

Not saying this guy is same but coming from same role and system, I would imagine he can handle being a RB coach.. Mario put him thru the gauntlet I am sure and I would imagine he was highly recommended. Alot of these guys need experience before they get picked up again in league.. Win-Win

If D$ / Pete or anyone else still have connects with Damien Martinez, they should ask him abt Upshaw. He was his position coach at the Senior Bowl.

We landed an offensive coach from the number 1 seed in the AFC and people's first thought is "can he recruit?" as if in the NIL age, at a school that is located in the hottest city in the country currently, that just played in a natty, desperately needs a recruiter first coach at this stage.

Love the hire.

This was well before NIL and the transfer portal. NCAA coaches are doing everything in their power to get to the NFL now.
A lot of them but not all of them. Plenty of nfl coaches ending up back in college; the ACC illustrates this point. This guy is 32, getting hired by a coach who recruited him but he barely got to play under because Mario got fired.

the guys getting nfl jobs have p4 position coach experience which he doesn’t.

And lastly, it’s not just guys bolting because of the new dynamics; a lot of the guys like hankerson or whoever else are getting hired by young head coaches who were their position coaches or were analysts with them at some school in the 10s.

The flurry of CFB coaches going to the pros is the product of a lot of under 45 head coaches getting their first gig

Wouldn’t be surprised if Mario kept in touch with him this last decade. He redshirted his freshman year at fiu and only transferred after Mario got fired.

Likewise I’m a fan of the hire and keeps us in play in central Florida
