REPORT: Miami HIRING Favien Upshaw at RB Coach

Word on the street is that Upshaw was among coach Cristobal's top 3 choices, or at lease top 5, if not top 10. This reportedly came about very quickly once he was identified, which was a very long process that included multiple interviews, zoom calls, an essay writing contest, psychic readings and some form of Phrenology, which people close to the situation describe as either extremely helpful, or detrimental. Expect similar processes for both the TE and CB coaching positions, unless Coach decides to switch it up and go a different direction. Stay Tooned.

Dmoney mentioned on the podcast that he heard Upshaw's name was being mentioned as one of the favorites last week when he was at the VT basketball game. I believe Upshaw had been interviewing for some NFL positions (WR and RB), so my guess is he was waiting for those before he made any final decisions

I remember when Brady was only a offensive asst. for Sean Payton staff and Orgeron bought him in, he got a ton of pushback also.. Then he took off from there..

Not saying this guy is same but coming from same role and system, I would imagine he can handle being a RB coach.. Mario put him thru the gauntlet I am sure and I would imagine he was highly recommended. Alot of these guys need experience before they get picked up again in league.. Win-Win

He's a former player that Mario signed at FIU. Not sure he was "put through the gauntlet".

And if you are hiring guys with connections, why not consider Clinton Portis?

Confusing. A bit disappointing. Might work out well, might not, but I have some very fair concerns.

And, NO, I'm not going to project a bunch of bullcrap on what other jobs he woulda/coulda/shoulda been interviewing, or give him the halo effect of who hired him, or invent some false confidence because we had a good year last year.

The fact remains, his resume is wafer-thin. That cannot be argued.

I heard that Upshaw was Top 20, or at least Top 30, and no worse than Top 40.

Mario really is vengeful and petty. Da*m you NFL for taking my RB coach. Now I will take one of yours.

J/k of course. But what this tells me is that our methodical coach engages in an extremely thorough search. I am also 100% certain that none of us CIS college football experts had a clue who Favian Upshaw was as of February 25, 2026.

Maybe, just maybe, we will remember to leaving the coaching in the future to the people who are actually paid to coach because they have expertise in coaching and the greatest motivation to do well. That is until we lose a game and we all become smarter than the coach.

Not sure a guy whos only coaching exp as the lead guy in the room is a cup of coffee at Georgia southern is going to help us on the trail in a critical year at the position and he clearly won't be here long term as his goal is nfl. Really odd hire.

Its a RB coach not a coordinator position. He worked under two solid HCs, seems to have the reputation of an up and comer and is arriving from a good NFL organization. Hard for the common fan to judge these types of hires, we just dont have enough info.

But I must say, we got some Jai Lucas hire type crying in here. Hopefully similar results.

the gauntlet comment was more of Mario being notoriously known to grill his hires.. I just dont think a guy who is on NFL staff with one of better offensive coaches cant teach his RB to hit their landmarks and pass block.. Do that and land Myson Cook and I am cool..

People really be serious with the Clinton Portis stuff? And how do we know he wasnt considered? Someone would of pushed back with his very light resume also right?

Water is wet.

Not to thread jack, but in actuality .....

Water isn’t “wet." Something is wet when a liquid contacts it. Water (or any liquid for that matter) is the agent that determines whether something is wet.

Even a host of molecules of H2O is not wet, it's just a larger volume of water.

Of course, there is a fun counter argument to this, but it's less rooted in chemistry and more in the bandying of semantics.

(just saying)

Mario + staff have been **** near elite with their scouting in the past couple of years.

Think they found another gem here.

I doubt MC has any concerns about your self described "very fair concerns".
