Reflections of a Legend...

I couldn't agree more about the spread. Would love to see us move in that direction and kill teams with our speed. It won't happen but we can hope.

We’re already a shotgun spread team. We just don’t know how to run the ball as a spread team.

Our offense has to stop with the 3-4series in a row where we go 3&out. It seemed like we did it every game this year. It really wore our DL out down the stretch and it showed. Manny needs to look at his 3rd down calls and make some adjustments. There is a lot of room for improvement on both sides and specials. Bummed about the finish to the season, but it was a fun season altogether. Looking forward to a good QB competition this spring and the influx of new talent across the board.

Go Canes!

A big problem leading to those 3-and-outs was that we just could not run the ball with any consistency. OL is one of the areas where we really need to get better.

FAU, UCF this year, Wiscy, VaTech and TCU are prime examples of coaching staffs that get more with less.

Diaz is average at best. At the start of the year the whole defense was jizzing themselves thinking they were gonna be a top 5 Def.

I'll bet anyone $1,000, fast forward a year and our def. will rank similarly to this year and underperform.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making excuses for Diaz or saying he should be immune to criticism. Especially these last 3 games, his defenses underperformed, no doubt. But VTech?? We always seem to want to put Bud Foster on a pedestal as if he is some kind of defensive genius, but there are always a few games every season where his defense gets worked.

Part of that is the ol. Hopefully that improves with recruiting, but agree that we need to mimic what other spread teams do in the run game.

Great post. I'm willing to bet that Richt's ego is too large to delegate playcalling to someone else. We'll see in the coming months, but I agree that he will blame the offense's shortcomings on Rosier because it's a convenient scapegoat (and a partially valid one) and start next season with largely the same playbook and approach...really hope I'm wrong on this though.

Whether his ego blinds him or he recognizes we need a fresh playcaller, I'm not entirely sure it matters at this point. Richt is tied up. He has his offensive staff and I don't think he's willing to supplant them with a new boss. He's too nice imo.

He wasn't too nice to fire his old friend Willie Martinez in '09. We will see if he really can evaluate himself. One thing is for sure is we need a few wrinkles in his offense. The fact that we can't run out of the spread says a lot. When we run teams know we are running and where we are running. Why there is no motion involved is beyond me.

There’s always going to be questionable play calls from any OC when the play fails, but with no consistent running game and a D2 QB, what did anyone expect.

Rosier is the #1 problem, followed by the OL. Jimmys and Joes, not Xs and Os.

The bowl game was painful to watch. When you recruit better than your opponent, you should beat your opponent, and that's especially true when you're playing them at home. They showed a graphic at one point where we have a boatload of 4 star guys on our team, and Wisconsin has something like 4.

Tip your cap to Chryst and Leonard. Chryst is low-key a top 5 HC in college football. They flat out took inferior material and beat us. They did a much better job than Rick and Diaz did.

They took a dude a kid Van Ginkel from Iowa Western, who nobody wanted, and turned him into a guy who was all over the field making huge football plays. Meanwhile, we have guys who are talking about going to the NFL early, and I don't think I saw them doing anything all night.

Our QB is bad, but so is theirs. You wouldn't have known it though watching the game. Diaz turned another bum QB into Joe Montana. For all the bathwater Diaz and his minions inhaled last year, he got worked this year. Switch jerseys for Rosier and Hornyfacquit, and they find a way to win with Rosier. And our fans would be killing Hornyfacquit the same way we are Rosier. Has anyone watched Benkert since he destroyed us? VT and Navy made him look like Kurt Benkert.

We are going to need to keep signing 4 and 5 stars, and I hope we tweak our staff a little. When we hired Rick some of us knew what we were getting. We were getting an excellent man, an experienced leader, and a proven 9 or 10 game winner. We needed a rock steady hire like him to right the ship that was pretty much sunken. Now, we need him to make some tweaks to his approach and his staff, and the 10th assistant will give him that chance.

We are a spread team, and we should be able to run the ball very well from the spread with the guys we have. That's not Rick's background though, and he could use a lot of help there. We need to hire an offensive whiz to help us with our spread rushing attack. The best in the business was Fart Briles. But he ran a rape house at Baylor, so there's no chance there. His son Kendall just set a bunch of records in 1 year at FAU, and he would DESTROY people with our talent. I know it's pie in the sky stuff because Rick might have too much ego, but I'd make a run at Kendall, and let him call plays.

Rick wants to coach, so he can coach the QBs full time. Let his son be the co-QB coach and learn the spread concepts under Briles. Then when Briles eventually moves on Jon can do what Rick probably intends for him to do--be the OC.

I'd tweak the D staff too. No need for 2 DB coaches, especially if they both have intern-level coaching experience. We need another monster recruiter on this staff. Can't afford to have a guy who only coaches CBs, if his CBs can't turn around and make plays on the football, and he can't recruit. You can't have your CBs getting worked by midget freshman WRs from Wisconsin. They lost their best WR too, but you wouldn't know it. His gig should depend on what we do with the AH 4.

But but Richt has Rosier, how dare you think we should beat a team with far less talent at our home stadium.

You're supposed to write a paragraph making excuses for Richt and Diaz.

Fact is Richt is not a offensive guru, gurus make garbage qb's look decent , just because of their scheme. I could give Art Briles a trash can to play qb and he'd still put up good numbers and move the ball. That's what gurus do.

As for Diaz, his D made Wisconsins garbage , noodle arm look like Drew Bree's. But now our secondary is " awful , no talent". But a month ago he was getting sucked off for how well he's coached them up. And they've ended up being a really good group. Oh how times have changed.

If Richt is smart he's being in somebody to help with his offense. Brown and his son add nothing to scheming and he's been out of the oc game for a long time. Bringing in somebody with some new, fresh ideas would be smart.

Richt is a good coach but some act like he's beyond criticism , Diaz too. It's ok to call him out for obvious things.

They gave Briles an actual trash can a couple years ago when he lost his top 3 or 4 QBs to injury. He took a WR and played him at QB against UNC in the bowl game, and they put up 600 yards rushing on UNC. I think that was the same UNC team that throttled us and that we couldn't move the ball on.

They should bring Art Briles in as offensive coordinator. He is one of the best and is unemployed.

Art Briles could make a comeback under the pastor's control but I think the following would factor in:

1. Coaches ego - would Richt be able to turn over control essentially admitting his offense isn't cutting it. (Does Georgia success push Richt to make bold moves?)

2. Administration - would they allow it to happen based on Art Briles past. Not sure if he has anything from NCAA preventing him from coaching but he could come south and family is close by in Boca (also seems like society is selective about forgiving but with that being said, SEC teams would give two sh*ts.)

I really like the legends suggestion to go after Kendall Briles. This is IMO the most solid choice to make. Our athletes would explode in this offense. I would also take Art Briles as he would not have control of the program. Why not? They hate us already.

Additionally, I think the obvious is our need for a true, full-time, special teams coach. If nothing else, make this happen!

The offense is a conglomeration of problems. The line is not good enough to line up and run the ball, they need to pass to set up the run. The quarterback is not capable of carrying an offense. He's too erratic on throws, only makes one read and has no autonomy to make changes at the line. The receivers have inconsistent hands for the most part and not having Herndon or Richards really hurt. The coaches don't trust the QB to make throws in the redzone so they're running ridiculous wildcat stuff because the line cant' block and the QB can't throw.

I would love to see them bring in a spread guru as the 10th coach. The offense did evolve quite a bit from last year but it still has a lot of room to grow. I'm sure personnel limited a lot of options on offense too. I don't think this is a "scrap the whole idea" situation. I believe that with a few wrinkles and another talent infusion, that the offense can be very good.

If you want to point to one thing specifically that Wisconsin did better than Miami on offense, it was their QB's ability to complete passes to receivers that were generally pretty well covered. There were at least 4 or 5 completions to guys that had a DB right on top of them. Miami needs a receiver to have three yards of open space to get a complete pass and Wisconsin is throwing darts into tight spaces.

The fact that we can't run out of the spread says a lot. When we run teams know we are running and where we are running. Why there is no motion involved is beyond me.

This is the primary issue. Motion and a few wrinkles will help, but the core of our problem is that we have an offensive coordinator who values simplicity and execution at the expense of creativity and scheming. Richt doesn't scheme to his opponents. As he said last year, word for word, "play-calling is overrated." Richt prefers running a few core plays, repping them over and over again, and running them in the game no matter what. We can improve our scheme a bit, but that's not nearly the problem. He has no feel for the game. He doesn't adapt to what the defense is throwing at him. He doesn't expose and attack weaknesses. He simply hopes to out-talent the other team. That works for Bama, who has reverted back to a relatively simplistic offense under their new OC, because they have an elite D and loads of talent. It simply won't work for us. Not now, and based on our recruiting, not for the foreseeable future either.

I don't get it.

Richt is objectively the best offensive coach Miami has had in a loooooong time.

Have a little faith. I am convinced 2018 will be a hugely improved offense

Because you're blind.

You are the #1 ranked white knight/slurper/kool aid drinker/sunshine pumper on this site.

Bigger picture, look at the bad losses in year 1 and year 2. Not good.

Agree with the rest of the post as well, but this deserves more discussion.

Most other top programs have one DB coach that can both recruit their *** off and develop talent. Having 2 spots on the staff devoted to the secondary isn't ideal, but it's downright unsustainable when DBs playing the ball at the catch point is a consistently glaring problem and one of those two is viewed as a recruiting liability.

If Rumph can't close on Campbell and co. considering their long-standing relationship, then he's capable of letting anyone get away. Our special teams are dreadful. We would benefit immensely from a Kendall Briles-type hire for the offense. We need another savage defensive recruiter. As it stands, we can only address one of those issues for the 10th slot in large part due to having both Banda & Rumph at DB.

If we land the top guys from Heritage, then that's fantastic and he'll have earned his keep. But I agree that his position should depend on whether they actually sign here.

I really don't get it.

10 wins and getting to the ACCCG was the goal. Mission accomplished.

Richt is the 2017 ACC Coach of the year, and the 2017 Walter Camp Coach of the Year.

Objectively he's been a huge success.

Half glass empty, half glass full. You still can't take away the 10 wins. And don't give me that sh*t about how they should have been blow outs. Under Golden Showers we would have LOST those games. Rick has much room for improvement as anyone does. But the program is on the way up not down. That's a fact. Record and recruiting speaks for itself.

Even if this is true, do you know how low of a bar was set here (in terms of prior OCs)?

Someone is the smartest on the shortbus.

In regards to the offense, that wasn't why we won 10 games. It was because of the defense.

UM would never hire Art Briles, so discussing him is pointless. His son is good enough for me.

****, I’ll take almost anyone from the Briles tree who knows those spread run concepts inside out. If it’s not Kendall perhaps we could get one of Art’s other disciples who would come here as an offensive assistant who wouldn’t require a full OC title and playcalling duties like Kendall would. We need to incorporate those Briles spread run concepts. If we do we will be unstoppable.

You're glossing over glaring issues. You do you though.

Are you happy with 8-10 wins to go with 1-2 bad losses a year?

Recruiting? He's been good and far from elite. Several recruitments have been botched. There have been questionable decisions when it comes to numbers such as: RB in 2017, DT in 2017, TE in 2017, etc.
