Reflections of a Legend...

Half glass empty, half glass full. You still can't take away the 10 wins. And don't give me that sh*t about how they should have been blow outs. Under Golden Showers we would have LOST those games. Rick has much room for improvement as anyone does. But the program is on the way up not down. That's a fact. Record and recruiting speaks for itself.

In regards to the offense, that wasn't why we won 10 games. It was because of the defense.

Defense really won the UVA game where they got ******* torched for 4 qtrs and made the Toledo and Cuse QBs look like first round draft picks.

Winning 10 games with Rosier no matter whether it was the D or the O was a complete miracle.

If we are being honest Richt and the offensive staff overperformed this year vs last year with signficantly more talent on the offensive side of the ball in '16 while Diaz and co underperformed this year vs last year

I don't get it.

Richt is objectively the best offensive coach Miami has had in a loooooong time.

Have a little faith. I am convinced 2018 will be a hugely improved offense

It’s a football discussion on a discussion board. If you think everything’s perfect then cool. Bow out because you’re not furthering the dialogue.

No one intelligent is advocating scrapping everything and starting from scratch.

The purpose of this discussion is to acknowledge the great things we’ve accomplished but to hope for some tweaks that might put us back amongst the elite. To sit there and say “everything’s great we just need better players” is useless.

Offense was horrifically inconsistent. But I still count Virginia as a win. Defense had their moments too. We need improvement across the board. But yes the glaring inefficiency is offensive consistency.

No one is calling for Rick’s dismissal. My concern is if Rick didn’t learn his lesson at Georgia of being too loyal to coaches. Rick kept Willie Martinez for 6 years until he finally had to dismiss him. I always wondered why Rick clashed with Jeremy Pruitt. All Pruitt has done is win a NC at FSU and working on another one this year.

I just don’t know if our staff as it stands is cerebral enough to make the changes necessary to take the next step. Both sides of the ball need better Xs and Os guys.

Because you're blind.

You are the #1 ranked white knight/slurper/kool aid drinker/sunshine pumper on this site.

Bigger picture, look at the bad losses in year 1 and year 2. Not good.

I really don't get it.

10 wins and getting to the ACCCG was the goal. Mission accomplished.

Richt is the 2017 ACC Coach of the year, and the 2017 Walter Camp Coach of the Year.

Objectively he's been a huge success.

*2 losses to teams with inferior talent in 2016.

*2 losses to teams with inferior talent in 2017.

Same **** happened with Golden, Shannon, Corker, and BoRtch.

You're glossing over glaring issues. You do you though.

Are you happy with 8-10 wins to go with 1-2 bad losses a year?

Recruiting? He's been good and far from elite. Several recruitments have been botched. There have been questionable decisions when it comes to numbers such as: RB in 2017, DT in 2017, TE in 2017, etc.

No I happen to agree with you. But this year will be the year that we see if we can continue to get better and make adjustments. You have to look at changing an entire culture. Rick has had to come in and reverse a trend where players come in with hype to wear a U on their helmet and not be led but have coaches that give up on them. Those teams under Golden Showers would jump out on a team and their coaches would quit on them and the steamroll effect would take place. IMO, it's still an issue with this team. The turnover chain is an example of it that's a great quick fix. It's glitz and glam. But what happens when the sh*t hits the fan? Early on this year we were able to not quit and fight back after a dismal offensive performance because we were playing lesser talented teams. We never quit and fought back to win some games that we would have quit on under Showers. Against strong teams who are tough like Clemson and a blue collar team like Wisconsin that sh&t doesn't fly. I don't include Pit because that was a debacle.

My point is we are moving in the right direction in recruiting AND in changing the culture. We lost Jobe but we kept guys like Lingard and Gurv and Pope. Rick needs to look in the mirror and realize he has to be better to be elite. We need tweaks to get to that level. Whether he does it or not remains to be seen but we are on the right path.

Worst case scenario: we are Richt's UGA- he builds an absolute monster of a team, falls just short ever year, retires 6-7 years from now (he won't get fired), next guy walks in and we are in national championship two years after. Best case- Richt sees Miami is willing to give him the resources to hire a better staff and is committed to winning, and he makes some big off season adjustments, including a new sp teams coach, full time OC, and new S&C coach (lack of physical strength quite obvious), and better recruiters. I'm also souring on Diaz but maybe he is smarter with his schemes next year so I'm withholding judgment. Do all this and we are in championship game year 4.

We have actual data, we don't need to bullchit. Here are the actual stats (per game) from our ACC Regular Season Schedule:

Yards Allowed: 397.75
Turnovers: 1.5
Sacks: 2.5
Tackles for Loss: 6.75

2016 (averages): Offense

Points Scored: 29.38 (This includes the 14 points the D scored against GT, 2 Fumble TDs) [Actual Points Scored is 27.625]
Yards Gained: 394.13
Turnovers: .63
Sacks: 2
Tackles for Loss: 5.5

2017 (averages): Defense

Sacks: 3.75
Tackles for Loss: 8.75

2017 (averages): Offense

Turnovers: 1.25
Sacks: 2.375
Tackles for Loss: 5.375

On one hand, you have a defense that improved drastically. On the other hand, you have a offense that regressed. Again, the reason why we performed better in 2017 was because of our defense.

This. Just because I'm generally pleased with the way the season turned out (10 wins, ACCCG appearance, Orange Bowl) doesn't mean I don't expect further improvement in the future. The staff in general has done a decent job playing the hand they were dealt but this is by no means a "stand pat" situation. There are changes that need to be made.

Expecting improvement is not the same thing as wanting the staff fired.

Of course we need improvement across the board, but let's be real. Our HC needs to drop the ego and see his flaws/limitations if he wants to take us to the next level.

There is also such a thing as continued improvement over an off-season. Constant improvement everywhere over time.

Offensively you can’t deny that we just get beat up front too often. Heck big Vaughn got straight worked against top tier DTs. Rosier was way late a a bunch of throws where the wr was open on his initial break. I’m not sure if that’s just coaching or Rosier struggles with throwing guys open. It’s probably some of both. But I totally agree that Richt seems like he’s lacking in the smoothness of his play calling. He’s like jeckyll and Hyde out there. One minute we’re running the exact same RPO, then we are in the wildcat, then we’re are this pass happy team. No rythym to it.

Defensively I like what Diaz does and did. He had some good stops. But at the same time he likes to lean on that vanilla zone. I think we need to play more nickel. And bring a safety in the box. However there’s no denying that MJ was terrible the other night. And so was Redwine. Neither of them played like a hurricane DB should. Can we get a DB coach that actually teaches kids to turn their heads around when the wr looks for the ball?

I agree that the extra coach needs to be an offensive guy. I also would like to see us make a move at OL coach. And possibly something with the LBs or DBs. Let Banda recruit. It will be an interesting off season that’s for sure. Most importantly though we need better QB play. With all the plus athletes in sofla we need one that can throw and run.
big Vaughn was a f@cking true freshman you d!ck,what do expect? for him to dominate vs 2or3 yr starters that are real grown men? he's a 19yr old kid that played great for us.on rosier is not both, its Rosy not being an accurate QB and we already have 2 that can throw and run for next year. did you not see our recruiting class last year? we got Nkosi Perry and this year we got Jalen Williams? maybe you need some sleep

If your playing I expect you to perform. Sorry your panties are all bunched up over that comment. But the fact is he was not great. He was solid. He played like a freshman. I’m not sitting here feeling like his play was special, or that he’s the tackle of the future that many on here were touting him to be. I’m happy he got the experience he got this year but he wasn’t moving guys in the run game like I’d expect a kid his size to.
And save the freshman crap for someone who cares, there’s a true freshman starting in the national championship next week at a much more difficult spot to have success than guard.
My comment about a mobile qb was more leading toward one of those guys being the starter next year and not Rosier. I’m well aware of both our roster and our current recruiting class. Now one of them needs to be developed to be the starter. And we should have had an athlete like that for a long time now. Take it easy there turbo. Your not the only one with a football acumen around here.

Are you claiming our 2017 "improved drastically" over our 2016 defense? Because it didn't no matter how many stats you pull out. Our defense underachieved this year in a big way.

You could argue very easily that Rick got way more out of an offense missing some key players and being led by a below average QB than Diaz did with the material he had to work with on D.

No one could disagree with this well written reflection of a legend. Not even Richt.

They may have started out as 3 stars but it surely helps to have 10 of 11 seniors on defense. It's the approach Larranaga has perfected for the basketball team over the years. We have been successful in the ACC when he gets and retains older players wit h fewer stars. It is qhat I call the mid Major approach. Kill the opposition with experienced players. Wisconsin was the number 1 defense for a reason.

There's definitely something to be said for experience, but they did a lot of damage with freshman WRs. And our D has a lot of experience too.

It's really a helluva model that Alvarez has built at Wisconsin. And he got himself a lifer in Chryst, who is committed to doing it the Wisconsin way and is the best HC they've had. He's really an excellent HC.

We were out coached , I don't know why that so hard for some to admit. We can just blame Rosier, just like Kayaa last year.

We were outplayed. A couple stops on 3rd and long and we win big. Now whether THAT is a symptom of coaching.......................

I don't get the negativity on this board in general right now. I especially don't understand the doubting of Richt as an offensive coach. They guys resume speaks for itself. He knows where we need to be and how to get there. The future of this squad under Richt in 2018 is really bright. If he lays an egg in 2018 then it'll be time to doubt.

I don't disagree with your OP. Was well written and objective. Well done.

Not sold on our OL coach. Maybe a move there would be worth a thought.

Some on the board feel like regardless of the improvement from an absolute ****** coaching tightends right now, or linebackers at UCF... offense, defense, and special teams under performed in '17. Without touching on scheme, Rosier's not average, but some of the athletes we have could have been used in more creative ways to get in space like we see other teams doing around college football. There's just a lack of general creativity and variety. We all expected at least a top 10 defense with our front 7 in this conference as well.

I feel like the programs heading in the right direction but with the current play-calling, will fall short of the elite level. The offense needs help, and its not coming from Jon Richt, Brown or Searles and Mark is way too old and inexperienced in the new offensive concepts to run them at a high level without someone who's been in the thick of it during their career. A Briles disciple would be fantastic. An offense based around speed, isolating elite vertical receivers to blow the top off of defenses and huge chunk running plays...? That's Miami talent

What about Richt's resume screams "offensive genius"? I'll hang up and listen.

A majority of Miami fans dont want to hear that Richt/Diaz were out schemed and out coached.

These same fans also dont want to hear Wisconsin has less talent than Miami.

They want Rosier to be the scapegoat. Blame the refs, blame the depth, blame inexperience.

There was a reason why Diaz was fired from Texas and Richt fired from Georgia.
