When I heard his interviews at Oregon it was the same no BS approach, and he rebuilt that team.
Oregon was only 3 seasons removed from being 13-2 and ranked #2 in the country. Taggart won 3 more games than Helfrich in his last season. Cristobal took over a 7 win team from Taggart and kept the OC and DC. Mario won 9 in his first full season, which is two more than his predecessor. In other words, Taggart improved Oregon more in his first season than Cristobal did. So Taggarts "rebuild" - taking a 4 win Oregon team and winning 7 in his first season PLUS hiring the OC and DC for Cristobal played a part in Mario's "rebuild."
If Mario had been forced to hire a brand new OC and DC, I think there is a decent chance it would have turned out like it has for us - the first season would have been abomination as he tried to force Oregon to be "tuff and fisical" overnight. Fortunately for him (and Ducks fans), he had an OC /DC combo already in place that allowed a more gradual transition. By year 3 he had recruited enough of his own type of players that he could replace the coordinators without it wrecking the program. If he'd had tried to do at Oregon what he's done here - force square pegs into round holes, he'd be an OL coach somewhere right now or updating his resume to join the Secret Service.
