Finley - can get away with 4 safeties
James - needs a redshirt
Wright - needs to get stronger

Hamilton redshirted later. I think youre thinking about a different Miami team than the one I watched. Agree totally on Gray and probably StLouis but guys like Waters and a bunch of those others were some of the better guys at their positions. Golden was looking to win games and score points with recruits by showing them he plays freshmen. Its not "ideal" for the long term strength of the program tho.
Miami is just going to start having to win a lot more games before we can be in a position to be able to keep a star recruit on redshirt.

Naw Golden was a clown who didn't have a clue how to manage a roster. Burning redshirts just to fill a whole on the Punt team. Herb Waters played only two snaps his freshman year....
Absolutely a clown....didnt know Herb only played 2 snaps. So you mean we could have had an extra disappointing season from him? Cool
But for real...that is another good example of wasting a year...terrible roster mgmnt...thats worse than Gray!
Herb Waters caught 10 passes for 227 yards and 2 td his freshman year. People are making up a lot of crap.

Lol is that worth burning a redshirt to you? Most of those "huge" numbers were from one game late in the season. Smh

In a perfect world its not ...for sure. But from what I see, here were the rostered Wide Receivers in 2012. I'm guessing that Herb KNEW he was going to play right away, and was probably really REALLY happy about it.

Dorsett (soph)
Hurns (junior)
Lockhart (freshman but I thought he left/ non-qualified?)
M. Lewis (freshman)
D'Mauri Jones (freshman)
Davon Johnson (senior)
Rashawn Scott (soph)
Jontavious Carter (fresh)
Garrett Kidd (freshman)

Besides making me sick to read, I'm gonna say it would have been pretty hard to keep him off the field. Now don't get me wrong, this is STILL all on Golden for not only being in this position and for being no good at roster development, etc but I just don't think Herb Waters is the right example when there are sooooo many others to find fault with with Golden.

Players with potential you don't let a year go to waste...going into the season Herb was like 6th on the depth chart. I think he had a quote after the one good game he had late where he said he would've rather redshirted if it wasn't for that game smh Its water under the bridge but i bet most of those guys on that list wished they had an extra year of eligibility at least as an option.

oh **** yeah, especially with an actual coaching staff! Bottom line is I think Golden made his decisions based on

1. trying to score points with local recruits by playing freshmen.
2. Playing every kid he could to try and win games.

Ultimately both of those plans didn't really work out and for us, the fans...and for players like Herb...we would have all been better off with that redshirt year.

Ideally, you'd like to redshirt as many freshmen as possible but realistically that's usually not the case. The combination of a lack of upperclassmen talent, a bunch of guys getting kicked off the team and a used car salesman for a head coach is usually a recipe for freshman playing time. I'm curious how many guys Al told "you'll get on the field as a freshman" only to see them used sparingly on special teams or in blowout games. No high level recruit wants to redshirt and you have to weigh the possibility of only getting two years of playing time if you redshirt him. Hopefully, in another year or two, Richt can have the roster to the point where only a handful impact freshmen get to see the field and most of the others take a redshirt season.

Pinkney, McCloud and Shaq will all play (the first 2 mostly on STs).

Bruce will get a bunch of minutes.

richards has a great shot at getting in the top 5-6 rotation.

One of Wright/finley will play.

Jackson will get minutes as a DE but I hope he redshirts.

Some players I can think of that Al should've redshirted...

Herb Waters
Tyriq McCord (to gain weight)
Trayone Gray
Tyrie St. Louis
Tracy Howard
Jelani Hamilton
Jamal Carter
Deon Bush (medical his soph year)
Jermaine Grace (to gain weight)
Rapahael Kirby

I'm sure there are more that should've been as well.
Choc, Mccray, Smith, Herndon and/or Njoku......

Gayot

That's incredible production in two plays.

Young - can get away with 5 CBs
Finley - can get away with 4 safeties
James - needs a redshirt
Wright - needs to get stronger

Was Irving a late signee?

Those e LB's immediately go into the 2 deep and are going to get work on ST's. They will not redshirt.

We can and we should. Let them get stronger and learn the new system inside and out. Then unleash them the next year.

Allison - obvious
Homer - needs to get stronger
Bruce - we already have a Berrios *Bruce will help immediately as a kick/punt returner*
Richards - Andre Johnson redshirted his first year *We had two of the greatest receivers in the history of the U when AJ was a frosh*
Mullins - needs to get acclimated academically
Irving - we have plenty of depth at TE *I'll allow it lol*
Haskins - see Irving *Twice? **** nah smh.*
Johnson - project
Martin - project
Jackson - would be the 10th or 11th DL
Bethel - needs to get stronger
Shaq - 9 returning LBs on the rooster *No guarantee Owens will be back at full strength. Shaq is probably better than 5 or 6 of those 9*
McCloud - see Shaq
Pinkney - see McCloud *I just have this feeling Pinckney is gonna be nasty. I think it's gonna be real hard for the coaches not to put him out there early and see what he can do. Reminds me of a Beason/Denzel type of guy*
Young - can get away with 5 CBs *Maybe, but he might be better than Mayes and Henley right now. That would make him the 4th CB*
Finley - can get away with 4 safeties *IMO Finley is the most day 1 ready guy in the class. He's a man-child. There's a vid on youtube from six months ago where he benches 335 like it's nothing. By comparison, Raphael Kirby maxed out a 375 this past spring.*
James - needs a redshirt
Wright - needs to get stronger

Herb Waters played in all 12 games when he was a freshman. He caught passes in 6 games.

You said he only played 2 snaps. You were wrong. Let it go.

Did u really think I was trying to be pin point accurate with that comment?? I know how to use Google like you, and u sound like a fool acting like "played in all 12 games" means he and the program got the most out of his freshman year??? He was barely 6th in the rotation and didnt do much of anything until that one "breakout" game late in the season. The point is he shouldve been redshrted, so let it go.

I think Golden promised alot of prospects that he wouldn't redshirt them and stuck to that promise...

Ahmmon Richards is 170 pounds so I'll give you that but there's no way Shaq, malek, and ced wright sit. Shaq is probably the 4th or 5th best linebacker on the roster and I see Malek and Ced splitting time playing nickel.

There is NO ONE in the secondary that could have redshirted early on in Golden's time here. The secondary needed anyone they could get on the field. No way in **** Howard or Bush could have redshirted with the putrid talent and depth in the secondary when they arrived. There are others that should have redshirted, like Gray, but people who think Tracy Howard or Bush weren't better than the scrubs ahead of them are just kidding themselves. If they were on the 2001 Miami Hurricanes, by all means, redshirt them. When they got here we were far, far from having the talent in the secondary necessary for them to redshirt. No way, no how.

Just like a handful of players can't be redshirted this coming season, just as many, or more, couldn't have been redshirted in 2011-2012.

Unless they're serious about using Homer, Bruce, Richards as major parts of the offense I would redshirt the three of them.

Look at this list of returning talent on the rooster:

kaaya
coley
yearby
njoku
cager
walton
berrios
herndon
edwards
lewis
dobard
gray
tucker
langham
washington
batten
