Recruiting holes?

I believe that it is best to judge recruiting classes in terms of how they compliment the prior year's class. I think it's important to compare to see any potential holes or team weaknesses that can manifest 2-3 years from now. These types of holes often lead to uneven classes (trying to fix the problem with quantity, leaving you short in other areas) or plugging in young players before they are ready (which costs you games.....or a championship shot). Here's a look at last year's class and this year's including commits and likely commits.

QB- Olsen, Kaaya, Edouard, Rosier. Great talent. Possibly one too many, can hurt depth elsewhere. Grade: A

RB- Edwards, Yearby, Powell. Different types of backs, not one all around beast IMO. Grade: B+ Flipping Cook makes this an A+

WR- Coley, Griffin, Langham, likely Dixon. If Griffin shows in Dec, awesome talent all around. Grade:A+. Lane or Rudolph makes this an A++

TE- Dobard, Herndon, Lockley...I think he ends up at TE over S or LB. Big, physical group that can block and get vertical. No surefire star in the group. Grade: B+

OL- Odugwu, Gall, Knighton, Darling, McDermott, Gibbons, Linder. Good combo of high end talent and projectable frames. Overall a pretty nasty disposition on most of these guys. Probably one Guard short. Grade: A

DE- Muhammad, Mustafaa, Thomas, Harris, Jackson. Great frames, talented and large group. Good mix of strong and weak side types. Enough talent here to take a flyer on Jackson. Grade: A

DT- Jenkins, Valentine, likely Moten. Talented trio but not enough bodies for the most important part of the D. Would like to see one more HS recruit added here in addition to Stuckey and another Juco. Grade: C

LB- Grace, Tucker, Figueroa, Owens, Smith, Young, McCray. Lots of bodies, important on STs. Good mix of strong and weak side types. Still would like a true stud MLB. Young is the only guy I would project in the middle. Similar to TE, I don't see a sure fire star. Grade: B+

CB- Burns, Elder, Bethel, Turner. Talented and fast. Would like to see another taller cb as the group outside of Burns is relatively short. Lammons doesn't really help that problem. Maybe Randolph? These guys can be brought along slowly as they other corners on the team will be around for a few more years. Grade: B, B- if Elder ends up on offense.

S- Carter, Lewis, Gray, Mayes. Need more bodies here as we will be thin next year. Would like a highly rated guy to go with sleepers like Lewis and Mayes and a talented guy in Gray that hasn't played D before. I do like Guyot and Godfrey locally. We are currently relying on walkons like Tolson and Fentress to paper over previous poor recruiting here. S should never be a weak spot at Miami. Grade: C+

K/P- none recruited but Golden has consistently brought in guys that will eventually lead to schollys (Bacon, Barnard). Not worried here. Grade:N/A

Overall our offensive recruiting has been better than our defensive recruiting. The only spots that I see a deficiency in are really DT and S. Safety is strange considering the Miami area should be easy to find really good players at the position. DT is a hard position to evaluate, every team will have misses here. Missing out on Bostwick and Bryant were killers. Need to throw numbers at this position. Would love to hear some other opinions on recruiting by position.

I think I might be missing your point. Not sure what you mean by 3-4 years. Wouldn't that be a whole roster analysis? I'm just looking at how the roster balances out when these guys are seniors and juniors. Next year I would compare the 2014 class with the 2015 class as they will then make up a pairing of seniors and juniors.

P.S. Mayes looks like a FS to me. Tall and Rangy, good but not elite speed. Eventually I think Lewis is a safety due to lack of speed. From his film, his instincts, tackling and I'm sure dad-taught preparation will play better there.

Way too much time till signing day for much of this post. Good effort though.

Good thread bro... Agree with you on the holes at S & DT!! Would like to see us land a couple of those super athletes like a Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Kenny Phillips, or a Karlos Williams at the safety spot! We should land one of those, just don't come around every cycle. Gotta capitolize when they do pop up! As far as DT, I believe that elite DT's don't grown on trees... We gotta tap the "juco well" to make up for the whiffs that have occurred the last few cycles. Also, our margin for error with guys like Valentine, Stuckey, etc, is very thin. They almost have to pan out! Hopefully we continue to grow in the right direction from this trending success we see from Al & Co!!!!

SAFETY is a spot with a hole.

Mayes in this class i DONT see him as a safety at all. Gray plays wr and qb and is an academic risk.

We currently aint in the mix with much known at safety..kinda wierd.

Thats the spot i dont understand our recruitment at all.

Four letters NCAA has given use a leg down in recruiting. I know personally that we would have been in the top 3 in recruiting the last two years not including this year. When the ruling is handed down you will see DTs and Ss at a high level year in and year out. But solid post as well.

The staff development credentials is what gonna make the roster. Not just players out of high school being saviors. There are no position that u have pointed out with any glaring lack of numbers. That occured under Randy regular. FSU now has only two TEs on their roster including a DL man that they just moved over. And they were supposedly this juggernaut in recruiting. Certain positions is also very hard to project. TE and LB really comes down to development and the players capacity to pick up technical things. Walford is our best TE and he barely played football in high school. And someone is gonna step up from that DT position when they get strong enough and fill out

Saw the thread title and thought I was on the other website I go to. We better get a commit today so I don't waste all these tissues.

Satefy might be a concern with recruiting but with Bush Jenkins and Carter my mind is at ease. Very much so.

Corner is a little concerning especially because I firmly believe Elder is going to go back to Slot sooner than later. I think its a waste having him out at corner right now since the kid is such a playmaker with the ball in his hands. Really hope they throw him back on offense.

I agree but this staff isn't one to overlook things so I know they have a plan. Therefore I'm not too worried about it.
