Just to piggy back on this, here are the arrests and major disciplinary actions that hit the team from 2010 until the end of 2013. As you will see, the majority are for either smoking dope, underage drinking, and DUI. While these might be nothing to sneeze at, they are also not any different from things that any standard college student might get arrested for while enjoying the college life. As 83dawg notes, football players (and athletes overall) get NO special privileges in Athens, and are instead targeted by a school police force under the direction of a Barney Fife zealot intent on proving that he is "in charge." From an internal standpoint, a past university president forced the team to drug test the entire team THE DAY AFTER SPRING BREAK. As you can imagine, a number of kids were suspended (UGA's drug policy is the strongest in the SEC - first time: miss 10% of season; second time: I believe 40%; third time: kicked off team).
You will also see the number of kids that were kicked off the team that played in other big time programs (Zach Mettenberger, Nick Marshall and Justin Scott Wesley) or currently start in the pros (Isaiah Crowell). Another poster is correct in that UGA is not - or at least has not been - like any SEC program. Our rules have been stiffer and we have not operated at the same level (averaged 7th in football spending during this same time) as our SEC competition (spent $50 million less on football than 'Bama over a 5 year period). How Coach Richt did as well as he did is amazing.

Dog Fan checking in.
Since some incident (i don't remember what started it), the Athens Police Chief has had it in for UGA football players.
UGA players get zero tolerance, plus aggressive policing. Anyone they can arrest, they do, even if no charges are filed later.
I mean, driving a scooter with a suspended license doesn't get you a ticket and a court date--it gets you arrested.
Passing on the right on a scooter? Arrested.
"Emerging from an alley" (no joke, that was the official police report)? Arrested
Not being able to spell your middle name, when you are a pedestrian, and give the cop your correct first and last name? Arrested.
So the arrest numbers are pretty high for UGA...
