RB Coach Matt Merritt: Jordan Lyle has added 8 pounds of muscle

In terms of NFL potential, Lyle is as good as we've had since Miller.
I get the excitement for Lyle, but I can't see him getting to a Duke Johnson level.

I'd be happy if Lyle gets to a Homer/Deejay level.

IMO as Lyle gets more meaningful carries against better teams, he'll look a little more vanilla. I think he's a little short of the size/speed he's perceived to have.

I hope I am wrong, but I'll double down that Fletcher will be our best RB this year.

He’s not necessarily saying Lyle will be a better college running back that Duke, he’s just got more NFL upside. It’s not that crazy considering Duke was only 5’9

Elija Lofton's the next Bo Jackson, etc etc. Gotta see it vs ND, UF, SMU, etc. I think D$ gets a kickback on every jersey sold to the board

Yea I need to see him handle the +1. Great rb make that +1 defender miss by any means necessary. Our guys seem to always have trouble and get tackled. We have decent backs but lets see if they have grown, still early for Lyle but jury is still out

That's the difference between a 10 yard run and a 25+ yard run. I have more faith in Lyle doing this than Fletcher.

I agree that college production and NFL potential can be separate things

I feel like Lyle may look/feel bigger because he's taller

Lyle's 6-0/205 is more of a WR build, Duke's 5-9/207 is more of a compact RB build.

IMO NFL potential wise - Duke > Martinez > Fletcher > Lyle.

I get how anyone would think I'm wrong, and hope I am, because we'll be a really good backfield if I am.

Fletcher doesn’t have to balance to be elite and also fumbles. Lyle is RB1 and Fletcher is RB2 along with the transfer. Nothing wrong with that. Let Fletcher wear defense down with his straight forward running style.

Spoiler alert, the additional 8 pounds of muscle are all in the lower body.

And I won't say where. But I am obligated to say "pause"...
I've heard too many stories (in numbers 2) about running backs having a lot of weight downstairs.

The other is about a former Ohio State RB now New England Patriot...

Omg those calves pop off the screen!

Excuse Me Lol GIF

What I’ve been thinking. I think Fletcher can take a major jump this year, healthy, and participating in a full offseason. My style comp, Chris Brown (Digging in the crates):

Different era of football for sure and 2 different styles of offense but they compare pretty favorably.

Fletcher - 6’2” 225
Brown - 6’3” 220

Sophomore Stats
Fletcher - 112 carries, 607 yards, 5.4 YPC, 9 TD
Brown - 190 carries, 946 yards, 5.0 YPC, 16 TD (6 in 1 game 👀)

Junior Stats
Brown - 303 carries, 1841 yards, 6.1 YPC, 19 TD

With the same usage (and healthy) we’re at around a 1,026 yard, 15 touchdown season for Fletcher last season. With a comparable jump to his junior season: adding a yard per carry, around 35% of the carries (little less than Martinez last season) does 1100 yards on ~ 160 carries and 13/14 touchdowns seem lofty for next season?
