What about Benedict Hypolite? Now the RBs coach at FIU and developed a nice RB over there this year. If the rumors about bringing in Edwin Pata back (who’s the oline coach at FIU) bring Benedict back too. He has familiarity with the staff and was the assistant RBs coach under Merritt two years ago.

Stuff like having the players prepared to know the plays and blocking sure, that can be on the coaches.
Otherwise, everything else is on the RB.
Either you have it or don't.
So you better have a coach who can recruit the hck out of that position.
In fact, your RB coach should be recruit other posititions as well.
