dont think they did..think they brought in the 2 rbs you have listed on his all time list AND Demarcus Bowman from Lakeland (uf) in the portal...also have Ahmon Richards brother at RB.That part is encouraging. Thanks. But he also hasn't landed any of the top 25 recruits that UCF has landed in its short relevant history. 247 doesn't list past that. Note that the 25th best recruit was only a 3-star with a .8833 rating. So let's just estimate 28 for the sake of conversation. 28 times, a UCF coach has been able to land a player that is rated higher than his all-time best recruit. And right now is certainly the easiest time in UCF history to recruit, with them having had recent success, Malhzan, and going to the Power-5. I am not saying he did a bad job or anything, but I just don't see "recruiting assassin" when I look at his CV. Would love to be wrong. He's a Cane and I want him to do well regardless of whether he's here or not.
These are the best kids he's ever landed:

I also noticed he didn't land a single RB from HS or the portal this past cycle. Or am I mistaken?

He's only been at UCF 2 years.
Trash journalism at it's finest

Samples likes the setup at ASU. He’s very young and ambitious, he aims to become an OC and HC in the next few years, and he believes Kenny Dillingham, as the youngest current HC in FBS, is the right guy to get him there.Did he really? Woah bring him here to coach RBs then
So he can’t learn under our new OC? If not, then we ain’t doing this thing right?Samples likes the setup at ASU. I’m sure Mario has given him a hard look because he’s a big fan of the Rams’ offense, and he has poached at least two coaches soon after they got hired at other schools (Steele, Guidry), but Samples really wants to learn how to call plays and that’s not an area where Mario excels. No doubt he’d make a great addition to the coaching staff here, though.
Samples has two great resources at ASU in Dillingham and Beau Baldwin. Baldwin has led some prolific offenses in the FCS, and Dillingham brings accumulated knowledge from Gus Malzahn and Prison Mike Norvell. Plus Samples left the Rams during the season in order to return to college coaching despite knowing he’d have his pick of opportunities after the CFP, so clearly he’s bought into what Dillingham is selling. Plus this will be his first year as a lead WR coach, which offers a clearer route to calling plays in today’s game than his previous experience as an RB coach did.So he can’t learn under our new OC? If not, then we ain’t doing this thing right?
He’s not my preferred choice but he’s only coached at FIU and UCF. I mean what constitutes a good recruiting track record at those places?
Going by 247’s rankings the program has signed 18 4 stars in program history. The two highest commits he has are the 2nd and 3rd highest rated RBs the program has signed. Again this is using 247’s metrics.
I feel like he would fit well with the support staff Mario has built here. Not necessarily the “****” name but I feel like he fits the mold of the young/hungry upward mobility type. It's a good question. A lot of that is word of mouth and what people closer to recruiting think of a candidate, but for the rest of us that aren't plugged in like that it's hard to tell.
Personally, I look for two things: (1) a guy who doesn't just get commits at his position, but who helps recruit kids at other positions; and (2) the quality of the recruits at his position compared to the rest of the class. The first is an indicator of regional/HS ties and that people in the building trust him as a recruiter. The second helps compare his recruiting versus the brand on his polo.
Looking at his recruiting in the class of 2021, FIU's 3 highest rated HS commits all had THJ as a primary or secondary. With the class of 2022, at UCF, he brought in two 3* RBs, and they both rated higher than UCF's average commit that class. So he's bringing up those classes, not bringing them down or even maintaining. He didn't get a HS RB in the room at UCF for c/o 2023, though. That's a red flag, but it could have to do with how many bodies are in that room right now.
To me it looks like FIU leaned on him in its recruiting, and at UCF he seems to be recruiting at an above average level for the school. And obviously he's well-connected in South Florida. I'm not sure who is actually available and THJ may not be my first choice, but I'd be fine with him as our RB coach and think he'd be a solid hire with legit upside.
