Statement win for Miami Football. Complete domination over a highly ranked program with a proud history (even if we hate them). The Defense and the crowd set the tone. The offense capitalized on opportunities and was pretty efficient. Rosier made excellent decisions and managed the game extremely well. The entire team played well in every phase. The coaches had a great game plan (particularly on D) and the players executed at a very high level. A disciplined and special performance.
Random observations:
The DL balled out. Their speed & athleticism was way too much for ND's vaunted OL. Chad Thomas likely had his best game ever as a Cane and was man among boys out there. Their backside pursuit was awesome. Stuffing their power running game was job #1 and they did an incredible job of that until the game was out of reach and second & third teamers were rotated in. Wimbush was no match for or DBs and he was clearly rattled by the performance of our front 7.
ND looked slow on offense because of the speed of our front 7. Josh Adams consistently struggled to get going against that speed. ND should have gone to their faster RBs sooner. Adams had no chance to get going against our front 7.
The DBs continue to play at a very high level also. Bandy's pick 6 was sweet! We could easily have had a couple more INTs.
It's so great to see the Canes playing Miami defense again. After five years of suffering under a passive scheme, we finally have our Miami brand of D back. Major props to Manny Diaz, Coach Kul, Mike Rumph and all the players on D for bringing Canes football back.
CMR mixed up the playcalling on O and the offense capitalized pretty well on opportunities created by the D.
Rosier is simply a winner and has ice water in his veins. He managed the game very well & distributed the ball to his playmakers. He may not not have had gaudy stats but he ran really well at the right times and made some great throws in big spots (like the TD pass to Berrios which was a thing of beauty). He may not be the fastest QB out there but he keeps the chains moving with his legs and made very good decisions about when to run (and when to slide). Many players on the team are making major contributions (most of the DL, Jaquan, Michael Jackson & others) but Rosier is the MVP. He's a winner. Period.
Great catch by Berrios for the first TD. He's become a great leader and it's awesome to see his development.
Homer played a key role in salting the game away. He ran hard and doled out punishment to gain extra yards. As usual, he ripped off a couple of long runs. He's really stepped up after Walton went down. Baller.
DeeJay!! He made some big contributions in this game in key spots. Great to see him getting some burn and capitalizing on his opportunities. There's some serious fight in that dawg!!
Jaquan continues to make big plays (including his INT) and he's a greater leader on D.
Bandy continues to develop and his pick 6 was a thing of beauty. He read the play perfectly and his break on the ball was well timed. We're lucky we'll have him for at least another couple of years.
Feagles had a really good game and we clearly won the field position battle between our D providing short fields, creating turnovers and Feagles pinning ND inside the twenty. Glad he had a really solid game. Kickoff coverage was pretty decent too. Badge missed a FG but overall he's a stud and a key part of this team.
The execution was really clean. Stupid penalties were very limited and we avoided turning the ball over. More than anything, the players really rose to the occasion and virtually everyone called on to perform did so at a high level (even Cager & Dayall for the most part). Cager made a really tough catch that he simply wouldn't have made earlier in the season. He played with way more aggressiveness & confidence in this game. I hope he keeps it up. He actually could be a real weapon for us.
I hope the team enjoys this big win but still has to finish the race. Virginia and Pitt (on the road) should not be taken lightly. That would be a huge mistake. This team is really starting to feel like a team of destiny but they have to finish the race. Go Canes!
Thank you to all those who serve our country and prayers for all those fallen heroes and their families.
