Random Observations- Ball State

Missed parts of the game so not complete

- Pure speculation but they are pacing Martinez and some others since they think this could be a 15-16 game season. Martinez and most of CFB have never played a long season like this can be.
- This will be a big theme as the season plays out. Look at NFL rookies and how they slide as the year goes on.

- This is completely different than 2017. 2017 was a lot of lucky bounces. This is a supremely talented team.
- How many talented young freshman and sophmores do we have. I couldn't stop watching the end of the game when we had a team that played in high school last year balling out.
- This is hands down Mario's most explosive team. Both offensively and defensively. Lots of fast twitch guys on both sides.
- This is not the Mario I saw at Oregon. He had Justin Herbert but they never let it loose like this. He is showing incredible growth. In the past he never would have let his OC sling the ball like he did during the time when the game was being decided. The stats made us looked balanced but we threw it when it counted.
- The Chris Johnson TD made me think we have a lot left that we haven't shown and that we're just starting to tap into our potential.
- Cam Ward is a much looser, more confident QB than Justin Herbert was in college. Herbert is great and has unbelievable tools but he did get tense at times and over thought situations.
- How good are Aroyo and Lofton. It's not Bowers and Delp but it's pretty scary.
- Not sure how much rope we should give Sam Brown. He has some explosion so maybe we should look at this like preseason where he's getting acclimated.
- Surprisingly I'm a little disappointed in the Oline depth.
- Alston is a stud but I have PTSD seeing the #11 and thinking of Cory Flagg a step too slow.

Anyway will have more when I watch the game again.

This x 1k! If coach continues to evolve, so will his teams. And that's scary considering his actual strength is talent acquisition. We've gone years without an offensive identity. This is the type of offense that will earn us new fans.

This.

Ajay and Fletcher seem to bounce it more and they had the most success in the run game yesterday. Some guys styles aren’t made for bouncing or lack the vision.
What you were saying about Martinez made a lot of sense

I was keying more on the running game once the game got more in hand just to kind of see if there was more variety, or see what was up (btw I kept saying to the people I was watching with “75 and 55 are no joke”)

The plays were there

When they were stacking the box early, I knew that we’d start to rush the ball in the second half. When you’re up 30+ in the second half of a game in which you are completely dominating, you don’t run RB1 out there.
Plus early in the game when the ground was still wet, it was obvious moving the ball in the air was more effective anyway.
I’m not worried about Martinez. Probably mostly because I don’t see a huge talent gap between him and the other backs, unlike the situation at QB.

Agreed. As a matter of fact...we still have to play FSU. He gon break the single game rushing records with how awful that run D is.

Probably from dancing behind the line of scrimmage a little too much.
Nah there’s no holes for him to run through anyways. The run game sucks! We need to revamp the whole thing! It wasn’t until the young guys came in FRESH we started going crazy. having 2 power backs is stupid too.
I was a little surprised on the personal foul penalty when Markel Bell was getting abused by that little edge player.
I didn’t see hands to the face on that play IMO. it’s hard for a 6’9 mf to get lower than a 6’ DE. But after that play he played better. His best football is ahead.

Bell was the most disappointing O-lineman that game. He was constantly getting pushed into the backfield by much smaller defensive players. Yeah, that play where he got the penalty was obviously one of his worst plays, but he didn't look good all night. That edge player from Ball St was one of their linebackers that weighs 250 lbs. Bell is listed at 340.

Is it a scheme issue? I don’t know what Oregon St ran but Miami literally just runs dive plays

Maybe that doesn’t fit his skillset?

Would like to see some tosses, jet sweeps, stretch zone runs but I’m not sure how much of that is in the playbook. Miami likes to run straight into the teeth of the defense over and over and over again. I hate it
Been thinking the same. We don't have any creativity in the run game. Everything seems to be between the tackles.

I believe Mario is this way because of the passion he has for Miami, he’s willing to do what he has to in order to win. He knows he only has Ward for a year as well.

He’ll move to RT next year. Francis to left.

I have a kid who works for me that’s a rb in Hs. Physical , down hill angry runner with great vision. His HS team went to more of a spread offense and lining up next to the qb rather than an I form or pistol. Which hurts him. It’s harder to get downhill and pick holes especially with the tight splits. I actually told him to ask the coaches to use more pistol and I form. They did and he had his best game. He just feels more comfortable with that with his running style.

I think the same thing is going on with Martinez. He wants to chose his hole , get pads squared and get downhill. A lot of our best runs are off bouncing outside. This is night and day from what he did at OSU. I actually had concerns about this.

Sucks for him it’s going to kill his draft stock if this keeps up. Dawson/Mario need to adjust.

Top RB aren’t going to want to come play here and just up the centers *** 15 times a game

Martinez played in a very different offense with their QB under center. That gave him a better vantage presnap and momentum getting the ball. The limited times he ran the ball out of the shot gun last year, he didn’t look great…

I think it’s a real issue

Our first team OL has struggled run blocking vs first team DL all year. Great pass blocking though.
Once we throw in the second team we have larger holes but most of it is bouncing runs. IZ is great for our RPO and play action we just don’t actually run it well out of that look and never have whether it’s a light or heavy box.
Basically every wrinkle we have (power, counter, etc) we gash teams for a big play

I'll say it again -- Air Cristobal

Yall trippin for no reason on Martinez I'd be concerned if this was the results in conference play in middle of October.

This just the the 3rd game early in the season do you all not remember how well he played against Florida or Famu?

Im in the majority to believe coaches wanted to see the other backs get reps since they didn't get the opportunity last week because of the lack of focus.

This weekend we took care of business early and got the young guys more reps. I didn't see much of a drop off either compared to FAMU both sides were in sync dominated.

Hats off to Bobby Wash, Dylan Day on special teams and Justin Scott Pickett Patterson PoPo Markeith Malik Rudolph Horton for playing sound Defense I don't believe they completed a 3rd or 4th down attempt on the young bucks 🙌🏿👏🏿

Been saying this for months we gotta diversify a little more because it’ll help everyone in the long run!

I have my eye on 75 and 55. I’ve liked what I’ve seen in mop up with them. 63 had enough of a seal on the AA’ td run. Bell concerns me. One moment he looks good and the next loses leverage and gets bent in half matrix style. Lou is Lou , he should be nothing more than the human victory cigar. We need somebody to step up because the depth is shaky. Oh and Carpentwr is a stud. My guy is amazing in the open field in the screen / pulling game . Great pickup.

As for rb Ajay , he needs more carries. He’s very complete as a back. Good vision , explosion and catches the ball well. CJ24 looks like the light has came on and the game has slowed down. He’s letting blocks setup and being more patient. Then allowing the jets to be turned on.

Malik is another guy that’s earning more time. Thank gid they stopped the madness of him playing Mike and allowed him to play to his strength.

The wr’s blocking is another strength of the team. X took two guys out on CJ’s td. JG also looks to be taking it to another level . Hopefully he’s ok.

Lastly this front seven is as smart and disciplined as any I’ve seen in years. Very few times of losing gaps or contain and know to stop rushing when sniffing out screens or eye candy. Baron is a cheat code and 10 wrecked havoc all day.
I’ll concede then. I won’t say I watch them closely but I honestly thought Kinsler and Samson would be dominant on that 2nd team in mop up duty. Maybe I should lower my expectations. Fair point.

We used a little I form against UF I thought we’d get a tad more with Martinez here , maybe some pistol.

I’m an optimistic guy but looking at the OL as a group, it’s a tough position to eval. We’ve got guys stepping up imo it just isn’t necessarily the guys we expected. So we as fans get a little too attached to the names of recruits

The performance has been good though

Saw Tripp in there getting some good work as well

I've been pondering the same thing. This has to be it, right?

He only got 3 touches today. He only has like 25 touches total. For the lead back through 3 games, that is nothing.
TBH I like Martinez, but he simply was outplayed by ALL of the backups. Martinez just didn’t appear to have it, but my guess is that he has a great game against USF
