Random Observations- Ball State

Malik Bryant manhandled their TE one play just threw him out the way for a tfl then did the same thing to a T and got a sack I was like 😳 no way that was too easy šŸ˜‚ 🤣 Malik been pretty good out there surprised he doesn't get talked about as much as a RS FR

There's a lot of positives I've seen I was overjoyed yesterday watching the game with my pops being modest talking about the talent on the team after watching his squad get pounded by Memphis

I don’t think they’re ā€œpacingā€ Martinez. I think they’re going with the hot hand. I don’t think he’s played as well or looked as good as fletcher or Lyle. It happens. Fletcher was a question mark to play this season and Lyle was a true freshman.

Is it a scheme issue? I don’t know what Oregon St ran but Miami literally just runs dive plays

Maybe that doesn’t fit his skillset?

Would like to see some tosses, jet sweeps, stretch zone runs but I’m not sure how much of that is in the playbook. Miami likes to run straight into the teeth of the defense over and over and over again. I hate it

I have my eye on 75 and 55. I’ve liked what I’ve seen in mop up with them. 63 had enough of a seal on the AA’ td run. Bell concerns me. One moment he looks good and the next loses leverage and gets bent in half matrix style. Lou is Lou , he should be nothing more than the human victory cigar. We need somebody to step up because the depth is shaky. Oh and Carpentwr is a stud. My guy is amazing in the open field in the screen / pulling game . Great pickup.

As for rb Ajay needs more carries. He’s very complete as a back. Good vision , explosion and catches the ball well. CJ24 looks like the light has came on and the game has slowed down. He’s letting blocks setup and being more patient. Then allowing the jets to be turned on.

Malik is another guy that’s earning more time. Thank gid they stopped the madness of him playing Mike and allowed him to play to his strength.

The wr’s blocking is another strength of the team. X took two guys out on CJ’s td. JG also looks to be taking it to another level . Hopefully he’s ok.

Lastly this front seven is as smart and disciplined as any I’ve seen in years. Very few times of losing gaps or contain and know to stop rushing when sniffing out screens or eye candy. Baron is a cheat code and 10 wrecked havoc all day.

Miami has 5RB who I think all have shown to want reps.

It’s a long season so it’s nice to have the depth. Not sure how Dawson keeps this rotation as the season goes on.

Chris Johnson Jr needs to play more.

I tend to think the Martinez thing isn't rest. I think they are taking a look at all the RBs

Kyle and CJJ got in before Fletcher last night

I have a kid who works for me that’s a rb in Hs. Physical , down hill angry runner with great vision. His HS team went to more of a spread offense and lining up next to the qb rather than an I form or pistol. Which hurts him. It’s harder to get downhill and pick holes especially with the tight splits. I actually told him to ask the coaches to use more pistol and I form. They did and he had his best game. He just feels more comfortable with that with his running style.

I think the same thing is going on with Martinez. He wants to chose his hole , get pads squared and get downhill. A lot of our best runs are off bouncing outside. This is night and day from what he did at OSU. I actually had concerns about this.

I’m taking a wait and see approach here. We have played 3 crappy teams and did what we should do. I’m waiting to see how this ok does against a team w a pulse. The running lanes are not there right now and that has me concerned. Maybe it’s the scheme I truly don’t know but when I watch other games I see teams hitting holes out side and inside. We are always inside. But let’s just sling it w Cam to open it up I guess

I've been pondering the same thing. This has to be it, right?

He only got 3 touches today. He only has like 25 touches total. For the lead back through 3 games, that is nothing.
Would love to get @Cribby or @DMoney take on this with Martinez. Does seem to be interesting for a guy as highly touted with the production he had elsewhere. I don't know if he's nursing a minor injury or what. He definitely hasn't been as effective as I thought he would but maybe they are just being careful with him and getting him ready for the long run

One thing I noticed when Cam went over to Barrow and Baron and told then get up and go support the defense. That is a leader and speaks to the culture Miami is creating. It’s always easier as leader when the troops hold each other accountable and police themselves. The scary thing is this team can still play better and they are killing people.
Said it prior to the season, but Cam is the most important ā€œrecruitā€ we’ve had here in my fandom

There were a lot of runs last night that could have gone outside for big gains, but the backs were missing them

So I’m sure like most things, it’s a combination of a lot of factors

This.

Ajay and Fletcher seem to bounce it more and they had the most success in the run game yesterday. Some guys styles aren’t made for bouncing or lack the vision.

It was Lyle. Fletcher got a carry before CJJ.

But CJJ got snaps before him. He split out wide a ran a go route on the player we hit Williams in the seam early on

Fletcher came on in the 3rd series
So after reviewing the tape we we're both right. At 8:34 is the first carry by a RB after Martinez and both Fletch and Lyle are in. The ball is given to Lyle with Fletcher lead blocking for him.
