"Raising their Game"

"Likens explained. “So, I said, ‘We owe it to the football team to find out if anybody else can make those plays. We’re going to open it up and whoever practices the best, whoever produces the most, those would be the guys that would start the game.’

This is not a radical concept, just one that has been missing on this team forever.

Result?

WR's are the most improved unit on the team during the season. But the WR's also needed to respond to that adversity and they showed what they were made of. I'm happy for all of those guys. Playing their asses off.

This honestly ****es me off more than anything. Alright cool, you guys have been way better and have been working harder the last month or so... why couldn’t you do this the first 2.5 years (or in harley’s case 3.5 years) you were on campus. That’s a culture problem. Good to see it FINALLY being addressed

I feel like "culture" is a phrase we use WAY too much around here for a team that has alot of players that have never had a winning season while being at UM. A guy like DWiggins and that entire class that came in with him is in his 3rd year here and he has only seen 7-6 and 6-7 seasons. They dont know about a winning culture because they havent seen it.

You build culture by doing what we are doing now. Winning games and building confidence that you can win any game on any given Saturday..then the culture comes with that. Not the other way around.

I'd like to add accountability and pride.
Which is a coach's man job. They have to be able to lead these kids and push the right buttons. Kids want to be led.

You can't just be passive as a coach and act like you're some sort of sterile lab technician where teaching technique is your only job. Your main job with these impressionable young people is teaching preparation, commitment, and approach.

Great read. Love what I’m seeing and hearing from the WR group. They’ve made a huge leap in just the past month of games, after a lot of ppl had written them off. And now that they know what it takes and have taken that next step, I expect that trend to continue.

Thanks for posting Hoyacane.

They still drop A LOT of passes. They still can't block AT ALL. They still won't go up and try to catch a 50/50 ball.

Calling them out was just a gimmick to try and wake them up. There obviously was never a plan to bench them. Imagine being behind them on the depth chart.

More proof that they just start players based off seniority. Mannys 5th year here. Still having issues with attitude and effort. Coaches allow it.

Almost any other school would have benched these kids, and more or less forced them out.

This isn't a positive story. It's disgusting.

You are so right but we are now looking in the future. Got to keep the PLAYERS in check. The carrot phylosophy on the stick.

Our starting WRs are probably the least talented group since we became relevant. Likens has gotten everything he can from them. They’re not going to magically transform into 1st rd players. I’m excited about our young WRs and the ones coming in.
