Question about retaining coaches

Anyone who's collecting checks from this AD right now is a tainted loser and must be brought out to the firing squad with the others.

It’s generally up to the new head coach. Obviously if a guy is bringing his entire staff from a previous job, nobody gets retained. That rarely happens. Most of the time a coach will bring a couple of assistants, usually position coach types but have to fill out the rest of his staff with leftovers or new hires. It wouldn’t be inconceivable for guys with local recruiting ties like DVD and Field to be retained. It really depends on who the new head guy is going to be.

They bring their own guys, because nothing breeds success like a pack of yes-men.

When they go outside their circle, it seems like the hiring of assistants comes down to the HC’s reputation more than anything. Lesser known HC’s are limited to assistants who aren’t able to catch on with bigger name guys.

So with a smaller pool to choose from, the hiring of an assistant is likely an exercise in compromise. It probably comes down to either complimenting the recruiters on staff by hiring a more player development oriented coach, or if you’re at Miami…. Whoever is cheaper.

Dbs have played like sh(t this year with Trob in charge. He can recruit. I don’t give a fug if he stays or goes.
Yea I don’t know why he is getting a pass in all this. Guy was supposed to transfer our DB room into a great unit. All the same guys back from the past year and add in Stevenson and the DB’s are missing more assignments and tackles than ever.

When a new HC is hired by a university, what is his thought process about retaining coaches from the previous regime? I see some posts about retaining DVD, Cooney, T-Rob, and Fields. As a HC, what do you consider? Scheme? Personality? Recruiting acumen? The assistant coaches ability to develop players? Or does the new HC simply disregard all that and bring in his own guys?
Depends on whether other options are better. In the NFL Jeff Stoutland has been with the eagles through several regimes. You know why? He’s the best in the business.

It’s tough, especially here, because you need guys who have recruiting roots or you’re screwed. I would keep DVD and T Rob. Let everyone else go.
