QB situation theory

Lets all hope the Perry suspension was a long known event, meaning CMR knew he wouldn't be available for LSU.

Based on that, CMR wanted to give #12 every chance to be successful against LSU. So, he gave him all the #1 reps.

Then, lets hope CMR had 2 plans in place:

1. Stick with Rosier after the LSU win, because the accuracy improved and he elevated his game.

2. Replace Rosier in week 2 because he's the same QB he was last season, knowing weeks 2-4 are ideal games to prepare the young guys for ACC play.

I think that Richt probably does want JW to win the job, but with him not arriving until the summer, unfortunately it seems he just didn't feel like he was ready to step in to what seemed to be a team that was pretty experienced and ready to win now. I'm not saying that I agree with the choice of mediocre experience over the potential for good/great decision, and I don't think anyone knows if the thinking would have been different had we opened with Savannah State rather than LSU, but I've got to think that the opponent weighed heavily in the choice.

I think his choice of Rosier last season was based on Perry not getting to school until the summer, and then once things got going, it was tough to justify pulling Rosier, and burning Perry's RS. This season, from all reports, it sounds like Rosier was significantly better in practice, and maybe that Weldon and Perry weren't getting it done off the field either. While I think it is important to reward practice performance to a degree, so that you do have guys performing in practice, I think that at this point, it's clear that the practice Rosier is not the game Rosier.

I don't see how Richt will be able to continue to justify keeping Rosier on the field and these young guys off. Our QB is completing passes in the 40% range. He is not just killing us with his lack of accuracy, he's making terrible decisions with the ball, resulting in brutal turnovers. He's missing wide open WRs. He's pulling the ball down and running if his first read isn't there and creating pressure by breaking from the pocket prematurely. He's not allowing our guys to catch the ball and make plays afterwards. And, assuming the reports are true about guys in the locker room being understandably unhappy with his play, the guy who is supposed to lead our team has lost the faith of our team after 1 game this season. Rosier isn't Richt's guy, he's doing all the things that drive Richt crazy, and we have 3 young QBs who are available. It's time to give all of them a shot to step up and lead this team.

You and I are in agreement bud. Only way to know what we have moving forward is to put the young QBs in some real game action.

My fear is that if we ultimately let this year ride out with Malik and we still go in blind into next offseason OR that we don't take a QB this cycle and we are in a tough spot down the road in terms of timing.

True. I think they've given up on taking a QB this cycle which is a bad idea because I suspect if and when Jarren over take both Perry and Weldon, Perry will transfer if not both. We need to bring in at least one QB this cycle and take two next to be in a safe spot.

I was at the game. First off, that was the best stadium I’ve been in. Total first class all the way. Words can’t do it justice. If you can make it there for a game you have to go. I’m not a cowboys or Jerry Jones fan but respect is due. Back to my Canes, our offense need some more dimensions to it. QB accuracy is a problem. Perry would’ve been better because of accuracy and quickness. Jeff Thomas had to be Odell Beckham several times and that’s a credit to him but on simple passes that’s not acceptable. Our starting receivers should be JT, Hightower and Ahmmon. Jordan looked good. On defense, Dean (#6) is killing us. They were picking on him cause he can’t cover. Losing Muddy Badger early killed us cause we had to play Dean and he ain ready! I thought Al Blades played solid. Pinckney left a lot of tackles on the field and got caught up in traffic several times while the RB ran by. But overall, defense was solid. Bad offensive play calling and punting put them in a bad position.
Perry should start the next game and play the first half and let Weldon take the 3rd quarter and Williams the 4th. Let Rosier take a break this week and watch from the sidelines.

He inherited Perry from Alf. He can say Perry was "his guy" after making him recommit but based on recruiting history, that strains credulity.

His last 7-8 years stains history, stafford is only real stud he’s had in a looooong time . The kid he had from Tampa plant was pretty good . He’s had pretty long gaps of meh qb play / recruiting. Qb position was his issue at Uga and the main reason he was fired , and it’s continued here. It’s year three and we’re still rolling Malik Rosier our.

I’m not saying he’s a bad qb coach , I’ve just never gotten the hype with him as a supposed guru. I thought he was very overrated while at Uga and my view hasn't ’t changed.

as great as the FSU and GT wins were last year, it has created this cusion for Rosier where it seems they think he can bring us back, it needs to be over

Richt has been a coach for a long time. Despite what you think about him he knows he has to play the best person available. College Football is about winning now. Not stacking the deck for next year. Whoever has the best chance of giving us a win will start. He thought that was Rosier going into LSU game. Hopefully he has changed his mind.

This is what was said about Kosi.

There's no way in **** you can just punt on this season given the talent on the team. You can always open up the competition in the offseason. We know what we are with Malik and CMR is doing the players, coaches, and fans a disservice if he doesn't swing for the fences with one of the 3 young guys.

I agree 100%

What's CMR got to lose by trying the other 3?

The only thing I can think of is that it brings to the forefront what we all already know.....that your son Jon Richt has NOT done a good job developing these QB's.

Time to bite the bullet and have faith in someone else at QB

Rosier has already been exposed .....he is what he is....thank him for the ride last year, he's done his best considering his limits, but we need to go in a different direction moving forward ...for the sake of our future.

The choice is simple;
  • hurt Rosier's confidence by sitting him for cause, watch the team rally behind the new starter with renewed resolve
  • OR watch the frustration continue to grow while the morale of this entire team is destroyed.
Put your son to work on the fly. Let him prove that he has what it takes to make our young QB's efficient over the next two games. You can always go back to Rosier

I agree! The only part I don't agree is that it will hurt Malik's confidence. I'm pretty sure that if you asked him that he would agree that he should be benched as well after performing like that in the last 4 games.

JW came in the spring. He played in the spring game.

Not only did he refuse to play Williams/Weldon, he refused to play Lingard, Pope, Scaife, et al. All talented guys that should be seeing a lot more PT.

Look, I’m not gonna turn this into a “Richt doesn’t play freshmen” across the board type thing. Hightower and Blades Jr. we’re out there making plays Sunday night just like Deejay all season last year. (Not to mention Jordan and Mallory getting all the reps instead of Polendey). This is about QBs.

The issue here is that a simple one read crossing pattern turned into a Sports Center Top 10 catch because it was thrown so far behind JT. On a simple 10 yard comeback Malik threw the ball so high and wide that a 6'5" WR just stood there and watched it sail over his head. It's not about being ready, or knowing the playbook, it's about being able to make the basic throws necessary to play D1 QB. And are we really saving ourselves from freshman mistakes when we consider the pick 6 that Rosier threw? I'd gladly take the growing pains of playing a guy that may not be fully ready vs a guy who is not capable.

Don’t over think it. The deal is that the young guys haven’t lit it up consistently in practice. In that spot you go with the Sr., However the Sr. Is on a 4 game losing streak and could have blown your whole season becuase moral is low and his teammates are turning on him. At this point Richt has to get uncomfortable and hope that one of these guys can take a giant leap.

IMO based on the the suspensions of the more seasoned backups if they showed maturity and focused more on their craft they’d easily would have passed Malik already but there is an old saying that goes “how you do anything is how you do everything”. So odds are if you slacking in your non football responsibility you probably are slacking in some areas there as well.

Yeah, having Weldon and Perry not playing due to lack of discipline makes it apparent they can’t be trusted with the keys to the kingdom. Put Williams in and take your lumps with him these next 3 games. He seems to be the only focused enough on football to realize the other things (arriving at meetings on time, classwork; going to class, etc) matter when playing the position. Jarren offers us the best opportunity to get this **** show of a season turned around before we run into the meat of our schedule.

Let's not forget that we started with LSU. That influenced Richt's thinking.

He knows how tough that defense can be on a QB. He likely thought: (1) a senior gave his team the best chance to win; and (2) taking your first collegiate snaps against LSU can kill a young QB's confidence.

With that said, I would've liked to see him fast-track Jarren a little bit more. He was much better in spring because he played with better teammates (second unit) and was still alive in the competition.

I agree with your premise on the LSU game. Makes sense.

But as for your second point ... So, you're just completely bailing on the N'Kosi Perry hype train you and Pete created last season?

Just going straight to the new kid, and setting unrealistic expectations on him, now?

Why does our program always lack common sense? Start someone else this season if Weldon or Perry plays well then we're fcking come 2019 with a QB with experience under his belt who can actually throw at a division 1 level. If they are average then open the competition off-season to see if Williams can win the job.

See this is why Saban and Belichick wins championships. They makes the not so complicated decisions, well, not complicated. While everyone seems to overthink things they do not. Saban benched his 26-2 QB because he knew he needed someone who could actually throw a football. Now, I'm not sure who the **** beats Alabama.

Meanwhile, we got a QB who has shown you time and time again he is not a division 1 QB with throwing statistic you would expect from a walk-on QB and we're wondering if we should bench him or not. When I say put in anyone other then Rosier that includes Walk-on because I have a hard time believing they can do any worse then 45% as a passer.

Matter of fact, Vincent Testaverde who plays for FCKING ALBANY completed 62% of his passes with inferior talent vs Pitt but Rosier last year against Pitt with superior talent completed 44% of his passes. Both players were at Pitt.

But as for your second point ... So, you're just completely bailing on the N'Kosi Perry hype train you and Pete created last season?

We predicted N'Kosi would start before he got here. That wasn't really based on N'Kosi, but rather on our belief (and intel) that Rosier and Shirreffs would never play here. Richt has since confirmed that he didn't have much faith in Rosier before August 2017.

But Perry has never consistently torn it up in practice. In terms of actual performance, Jarren has looked better. @Brooklyndee can confirm.

With that said, who knows how they will look in a real game? My hope with Perry is that he has success in a game, gets his confidence up, and begins to lock in like a Miami QB should. That process may begin on Saturday.

This just hit me, and it may not reflect reality, but here is one possible theory.

It could be that Richt doesn’t like what he has seen from Perry & Weldon and doesn’t want either of them taking over as his long-term entrenched starting QB. Jarren Williams is his hand-picked QB of the future and the guy he wants under center for 3 years. But he hates the idea of throwing a true freshman out there and planned to bring him along slowly.

So, the plan was to let the 5th year senior be the QB this season and hope he can do enough (with a ton of help from the defense) to pull off 10 wins like last season. This would give Williams time to develop behind the scenes and then you roll with him starting in 2019.

Now here we are and the 5th year senior is a disaster riding a 4-game losing streak in which he has been exposed. Richt still feels like Williams isn’t ready and doesn’t want to hand the keys to either of the other two young QBs. If he does, his whole plan with Williams is shot.

So what does he do now? Deep down he still wants his original plan to work, but the fans, the media, and apparently also the receivers on the team have had enough of Rosier. He has a huge decision to make.

If Perry and Weldon really are knuckleheads who can’t be trusted then he just needs to throw Williams out there and play for the future.

I tend to agree. There is never going to be a perfect time to bust out a new QB....but now is as good a time as any. What are we going to do, throw a new QB out there for next year's season opener, after riding with Malik all year to what I think is going to be a mediocre record?

I don't think we can get to the ACC title game with Malik this year. The book is out on him.

Now yall are grasping at straws because the situation is forcing people to come up with things rather than face the reality.

Jarren is not the handpicked starter for 2019, he's going to be a Redshirt Freshman with only a few snaps (if any) at the seasons end. Jarren will not be handed the starting job next year because he'll be as equally inexperienced then as he is now, because he never gets the reps.

Whoever between Weldon & Perry sticks around & doesn't transfer will be the starter next year. My money is on Weldon, not because I believe he deserves it or because he's better, but he's not leaving so by default he'll be the guy.

Richt didn't have some grand scheme plan with the QB's, there was no competition for QB1 because he never intended on playing any of the other 3 aside from mop up duty vs Savannah St & FIU.

He believes that we can make it to the ACC title game with Malik & he's going to stick with him until we literally can't.

****, dream crusher! lol
