I think there is a misconception about how much work backups do/should put in. As fans, we say things like “he is one injury away from being the starter. He should be working his *** off to make sure he is ready.”
Reality is, these are 20 year old kids that are stars on campus. Of course they are gonna party and chase girls, just like all of us did.
I never blasted Malik for the quote where he said he hadn’t studied the playbook enough before Kaaya got hurt. I didn’t expect him to. Not everyone wants to hold a clipboard in anticipation of a coaching career because they can’t make the league.
So I’m fine with backups who need an injury to see the field slacking off. It’s not the same to be the backup QB as it is to be the 3rd safety or DE - the qb is only coming in for mop up duty or in the event of an injury. Every other position rotates, to some degree.
That is all to say that the QB room must be cleaned of the cancerous “me” guys. The ones that pout when they don’t get PT. From all reports, this is Jarren.
Jarren was my guy last season and I would’ve been ok with him as our starter next year. But if he is gonna *****, skip practice, etc, he needs to go. I bet he would have already if King didn’t wait until last night to commit.
Kosi and Tate seem to have accepted being backups. If you want to party or chase your gf around the country, go ahead. Just don’t be surprised when you get suspended and passed on the depth chart. But I’m fine with both of those guys competing for the backup role. I don’t think Jarren will accept it, so he should be shown the door.
