Skeptical too. No way those sec clowns allow that. Those idiots would rather win sec champ's than natty's.
Yeah the problem is, the cyclical nature of teams’ excellence, rivalries, and the varying athletic successes.
Oregon might be good for a football super league but not a basketball one; and vice versa for Duke whose games routinely draw in millions of viewers. Duke x UNC is the most watched basketball rivalry, then Louisville x Kentucky. March madness alone is worth over a billion dollars in TV money. I wouldn’t call any of those four a top 20 football brand:
Big 3 in Florida, Iron Bowl two, The game Michigan vs OSU, USC, Texas, OU, UGA, Clemson, now Indiana, ND, Oregon, LSU = 16 schools already.
And that’d exclude current undefeated teams: Utah, BYU, UCLA, and Texas Tech. Ole Miss isn’t going anywhere without Mississippi State. Tennessee, Texas A&M, & Penn State are all massive brands. So are Nebraska, Wisconsin. Washington and TCU were natty runner-ups recently. Michigan State has had a lot of success in the past three decades. People care endlessly about their programs at flagship universities: Missouri, South Carolina, Iowa, Illinois, UVA. GT, NCST and VT are have too high of floors to be ignored. SMU and ASU just made the playoffs two years ago. Choosing the last 4-8 amongst this group would end the project before it could even start.
It’s the same reason why when Private Equity tried to inject themselves into the B1G, it all fell apart because of the differing valuations and changing of the guards as IU was on the rise while historic powerhouses like Michigan and USC felt their value was being dismissed and diminished; even though Michigan, Penn State and OSU were going to be paid the most money, USC and Oregon 40-50M less than them, and the other 13 schools were equal.
