Reality is nobody knows what will end up being negotiated by the combination of Media partners + conferences. Lot of horse trading going on. However as far as current regulations ... Miami would need to inform the ACC, prior to June 1, 2027, that Miami is leaving the conference for the 2028 season, and then pay the appropriate exit fee. If all parties are in agreement, without any restrictions from this bill, it could happen that soon. IF the 3 year independent status becomes a law .. then I believe Miami would leave in 28 and play 28, 29, 30 as an independent joining the B10 in 31. Doubt the 3 year independent restriction actually passes.

Why play as an independent when you can leave without going independent in 2031?

Won’t take that long. If the bill passes the house with the 20 cap still part of it, Miami will announce it is leaving the ACC before the bill is signed into law. Then Miami doesn’t have to wait 3 years because it was already an independent when the bill was passed. Miami will then pursue a legal remedy to avoid paying the ACC exit fee due to an imminent change in law that would have caused irrevocable damage to the university.

You have any knowledge of UM lawyers investigating this already or pure speculation on your part? This is one subject I can’t get any clear answers on from my sources.

Why play as an independent when you can leave without going independent in 2031?

You can bet that the conference you are headed to will be working WITH you to structure $$$ games for UM in the transition period so that your media payout is higher than the ACC and maybe even matching the B10. These decisions and plans are not being made in a vacuum. Realistically I don't expect the INDEPENDENT clause of this current bill to pass the House. BUT if it does for some nonsensical reason, I believe the conferences and media partners will have a plan for the "independent" group that makes financial sense.

Look at the ACC Settlement with FSU / Clemson that was basically brokered by ESPN. It states that if 6 schools leave together to play for the same conference or league ... the exit fee then drops to $75M. Well ... in the current situation ... if FSU, Miami, Clemson, UNC, UVA and Ga Tech all leave ... those 6 programs could essentially be in the "same" independent conference .... scheduling games with their future conference partners AND getting to leave the ACC for only $75M immediately.
