Protect College Sports Act [formerly “SCORE Act” thread]

We will be stuck in the ACC and NIL deals like we do will ‘capped’. Both are bad, real bad for Miami.
Stuck in the ACC? Why? You think that last Big spot is going to Notre Dame? Big wants that Florida market. ND is just fine being an Indy.

Evens it out cap wise and we have the money and the people to make under the table payments like Bama, Ohio St, & others used to do.

Obviously contingent we are in the Big10. Can still do it as an ACC like Clemson used to as long as we are the premier program vs the bottom feeder we were from 2006-2023.

But valid point.

I selfishly come from a baseball recruiting aspect where my son has to compete with 22-26 year olds for a D1 or D2 spot. It’s been a nightmare for baseball the current transfer market. It’s almost impossible now to get a D1 spot in that sport coming out of high school.

Unless you’re in a contract and negotiated and you’re being called a student and you should be able to transfer as many times as any other student would be assuming there’s a place for you and that has literally nothing to do with being 26. Five years for five years of seasons, kind of solves that and they could just be legislating that into law but instead they’re gonna pull all this realignment bull**** and go against freedom of association and other constitutionally, derived rights.
So much hypocrisy about rules for thee but not for me
I disagree with the countless transfers. I agree on all possible compensation.

The countless transfers is what really creates the chaos, IMO.

Miami is never going to be able to get away with "under-the-table payments" - we will get the death penalty while Bama resurges to the pinnacle of the sport on the backs of this bill.

I would have no problem with two penalty free transfers + the allowances for grad transfers, etc. Four or five schools in as many years is a bit ridiculous, but the Transfer Portal has been a very good thing for Miami.

Because having more money than everyone else won't help us? Because we won't be able to hand-pick our QB every year as we have been doing? Because with the NCAA back in charge, bagmen will be back for favored schools while Miami will be under the NCAA's scalpel, looking to be made an example of? while Bama/UGA/OSU get away with murder.

Not to mention limiting what athletes can rightfully EARN from their own talents and efforts on the FREE MARKET is evil and fundamentally UN-AMERICAN!

Think about it: how much better off are Cam, Mensah, Beck, Toure, and so many other recent Canes BECAUSE OF the mutually beneficial OPPORTUNITY of NIL?! In the old days, they would have been trapped at the lower levels of the sport to wallow in penniless obscurity! Now Mensah - the best QB in the sport - gets to compete for the NC and Heisman, rather than being stuck at Duke; what a waste that would be!

NIL has made college sports better than ever for the fans and players as 1) every year is truly different, and 2) the opportunity for the cream to rise (and the crap/deadweight to fall) is ubiquitous and ever-present.

This bill is just a Trojan Horse to restore the previous status quo while throwing the players and fans some measly table scraps - e.g. 21.5 million/105 players is only around $205,000 per head; and in 2026, $205,000 is good money, but nothing life-changing.

Think about all of the kids who have made life-changing money since 2020 - why would anyone want to artificially limit that opportunity?! "Competitive balance" and "bankrupting universities" sounds like a poverty, state-school priority problem - not a legitimate one.
Great summation.

Thank you. This was insightful.

All if you were insightful. I appreciate it.

I just don’t like the older athlete staying in college. IMO, that needs to be nipped in the bud. 24 years old max. Like you can’t play high school sports once you are 19. There is a reason for that.

I also believe you gotta cap the transfers.

I can agree with everything else you say. Not allowing teams to change conferences and putting in a cap, I don’t agree with that.

Before Cam, we didn't have a truly good QB since Dorsey - why would you want to go back to that?! Lol
It’s not that I want that. Just gotta identify a decent QB earlier before they imitate a first time transfer. I love what we’ve gotten in the last few years.

I just don’t like limitless transfers.

The P2 conferences are also trying to lock-in structural advantages because their TV deal/revenue share arrangement is WAY bigger than the B12/ACC.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the increased revenue may also mean bigger roster payrolls as the cap is derived from a %, with a maximum allowable amount specified as well.

Miami, being an ACC school, may not be able to even MATCH what a B1G school like OSU, or an $EC school like Baga, could pay under this law. This bill may be the biggest crock of **** ever written - and that's why it is hard to imagine it standing up in the Supreme Court as they seem to have an axe to grind with the NCAA anyways.

If we get in the B10 as the 19th team, I’d be thrilled, but do think the 19th spot was reserved for ND. Would love to be wrong. My faith is in Joe E saving the day! It would also require the B10 to play an out of conference game most weeks…hard but doable.

I think it’s extremely likely to survive legal challenge due to the anti trust exemption being granted to the NCAA by Congress.

At least with the House recess until Nov 9th, Miami has a few months to try to lobby and kill this or find a way out now. The Senate path is dead.

How is he competing for spots with guys that old? The 5 for 5 started and most the others be out of eligibility

Well, the arbitrary salary cap could absolutely be challenged - how to challenge? Just don't follow it. It's nearly impossible to put the cat back in the bag, and make schools like Miami reneg on pre-existing obligations.

I hate the cap as much as you do but the read I’ve been getting is that its going to get circumvented by the “un-associated” NIL deals. Otherwise the Louisiana senators , for example, probably wouldn’t be supporting the Bill.

The issue which complicates it is the inevitable selective enforcement on the part of the NCAA when it comes to policing unassociated NIL. Programs that are obvious targets like us will likely have to operate a lot more carefully.
Yeah that’s a slightly less bleak alternative especially with the last few years ofc, with us being so heavily associated with throwing around gifts and cash like we’re Oprah. However it’d leave room to work around. Just a lotta unknowns.

I just don’t trust the NCAA at all after they’ve spent so much for so long getting designing this bill into reality. I’m more worried about circumvention not applying altogether.

I could see those senators of high spending B1G and SEC saying, well, we’ll lower what we offer players, they’ll still make money, and if the money is capped, we can spend it elsewhere advantageously that helps us get the players. Accordingly, most of the big spenders like Texas, TT, Ohio State, and so forth probably feel like they can win out against other teams at slightly less offers because the other teams wouldn’t be able to, in their eyes, grossly overpay.

Without the ability to transfer multiple times we never have Cam or Mensah
Great point. Additionally, with gamesmanship of rankings or variances in development, multiple transfers are sometimes a player’s only way to improve his draft stock as NFL teams have stopped drafting smaller school prospects at rates that they used to.

A one time transfer is fine IF the players actually collectively bargain for that. Otherwise, that combined with the retention pool is going to kill-off the portal.

It’d be pretty lame if Austin Mack couldn’t transfer to Stanford or Wherever next season because of a limitation like that, as he started his career at Washington.

it seems like if clemson, miami/fsu, unc, and either uva/vt are against it, those legistlators from those states would be enough to prevent the act from passing...

I am talking about how it was before this 5 for 5.

College baseball players, avg age was 22 years old in D1. So many guys, if you watch the college World Series as an example, have been to multiple schools and were typically 24-25 years old due to injury exceptions, other exemptions.

College football fans vote. They, on par, are not nearly as educated on the issues as those of you posting in here. Vast majority of them hate all the transfers and pay-for-play. Like Boomers blindly supporting whatever Obama, Bush, or the MSM endorse, same goes for Saban and ESPN. The reason this is one of the only pieces of legislation in recent memory that is even remotely bi-partisan is because it’s considered a non-controversial layup with voters. Miami should’ve seen this coming from a mile away. I’m just going to presume it did and we’re not going to get caught with our pants down.
