SMU is going 8 or 9 years without a media payout, and made the playoffs in their first year cementing another legit program in the conference. May not have the biggest alumni base but they’re rich, they spend, they are in a huge metro area, they are in it to win it, and they’re **** sure thankful we let em in. It was absolutely the right move.

Rhett Lashalee turned down his alma mater Arkansas who “wants to win,” to stay at SMU.

Adding those 3 schools made us the only conference with schools in the most populated five states; and Stanford + Cal are only getting 30% of the media rights revenue for 7 years before two years of 72.5% then full distribution. Adding those schools increased our package by 100M’s. We are the only conference with teams in North Carolina (9th) and Virginia (12th) as well, and we split Atlanta with large alumni bases of our schools, mostly GT.

The problem is that Duke & UNC basketball is making money hand over fist for espn and the conference isn’t getting their kickback for it as they should. thats jim Phelps and his predecessor’s fault.

The college football playoff made March madness an undervalued asset & Disney demolished us in negotiations. No one ever thought to have the bright idea to sell football and basketball separately. Hopefully Brett Yormack doing that with the Big XII will teach the ACC a lesson so Disney can stop robbing us.

Buddy is acting like Stanford didn’t just go on a fifteen year run of being one of the best programs in CFB lol.

Too much self loathing in the ACC, we’re a better football conference than common misconceptions state.

Brohm tore up the B1G at ****** Purdue lmao. Purdue, miss state, and many other schools in those conferences are dependent on an elite coach in order to do anything meaningful. Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern etc aren’t exactly standard bearers lol….Michigan State has had a pretty similar trajectory to Stanford. Kentucky kept the same coach for thirteen years and his final record was 72-80.

South Carolina was trash in the ACC and they’re trash in the SEC.

Vanderbilt and Penn State were trash reputation wise when James Franklin got there. Bill O Brien became an NFL coach for going 15-9 there lmfao. Now does Boston college not want to win cuz they hired him? That’s absurd. Meanwhile Boston colleges previous head coach is now a NFL HC.

Wanting to win by any means possible can also backfire when it leads you to dumbass decisions and being cheap; cc: Wisconsin.

His point was the ACC added teams to out vote FSU, Clemson, UNC on league matters.

He's also not wrong that the have nots in the conference want limits on P2 membership otherwise they will lose Miami, FSU, Clemson, UNC, and possibly UVA in a future round of conference expansion.

If these upper teams get stuck in the ACC media deal that handicaps these teams by $15-30M (depending on success money earned) it puts them at a massive disadvantage to the P2.

The way this is written is terrible for Miami

The real problem is the cap. However, I think that’ll be solved either in the House or the courts. If not, I believe the Big10 or the SEC would eventually jettison deadweight programs like Rutgers, Maryland, Nebraska, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, etc. to make room for a marquee brand like Miami.

The real problem is money.

$150M to leave and then trying to make up +/- $65M in media rights payments.
 
I told you miami's allies were coming. Joe E is the man for the moment. One way or the other, things will come to a head shortly around the ACC's current membership. Timelines have changed and will continue to fluctuate due to factors the school and others cant control but the end result and destination is and will remain the same.

That’s not all he wrote, tho. And he’s even wrong on that front because Miami didn’t join Clemson, UNC and FSU on voting to block those 3 schools from joining. Neither did UVA. That last holdout was NC State, a school he’d say has no interest in competing with the richer leagues: a line that doesn’t make sense considering James Franklin’s hiring to go with renewed record donations to VT.

Louisville, who hired a coach from the B1G, and has beaten Kentucky in back to back years, doesn’t want to compete? The ACC just beat the SEC 8 outta 14 times this past year. Swapping out Louisville for Maryland in the ACC has been a major success in football and basketball. Maryland is 61-82 since joining the conference.

I think the ACC would rather not lose their championship programs, of course. But i also think the SEC and B1G aren’t rushing to add 3-4 teams each; and neither are their TV partners. You think ESPN wants North Carolina in the SEC; or even worse, the B1G? In the end, they added those teams to make more money for the league, which is exactly what it’s done.

We are stuck at a financial disadvantage because the previous commissioner is an idiot. And corrupt. But the B1G did the same thing with Nebraska, Rutgers, and Maryland as the ACC did adding those 3 teams. Because they had their own network well before the ACC network and the decline in cable, they were able to capitalize on that. Our move will payoff in the long run if the conference doesn’t self-destruct beforehand.

He contrasted their interest in catching with their desire to lock up said ACC teams.

Which I consider nonsense on its face, especially since Rhett Lashalee just turned down Arkansas and SMU has gone 14-3 against the ACC since they’ve joined. Cal just took Oregon DC’s, their version of a Mario Cristobal turncoat who left to another program, while Ron Rivera is their GM which helped ensure (with a boatload of cash) that their star quarterback wasn’t going to transfer anywhere. To add to that, it shouldn’t be forgotten that Oregon literally tried to hire Cal’s HC; only to get turned down by Oregon alum Justin Wilcox; while Oregon’s previous two head coaches literally left to join the ACC.

Spending money doesn’t guarantee anything; IU wasn’t a top 10 spender in the sport last year. Their subpar basketball program was, tho. They passed on championship-winning IU alum Dusty May. Same athletic department who hired Cignetti; Cignetti, who needed Cal’s transfer qb, had a great stroke of luck that his JMU QB commit had an older brother with two years of starting experience, and that OSU passed on legacy WR Charlie Becker; who his predecessor recruited outta Tennessee.

Everybody is trying to win, and the gap isn’t that large.

Clemson, UNC, FSU and every other ACC school was complicit in locking ourselves into this ridiculous TV contract mess; and UNC Where the previous commish was an alum, is at fault more than any other program. So for UNC to act all high n mighty after they ****ed us over more than anybody else is hilarious. For an FSU fan/writer to include UNC, who has been the architect behind keeping the ACC broker than the richer leagues, is mind-numbingly stupid. FSU sued him and his son ffs!

I am not in favor of that rule at all. Go to NFL minicamp..cant hack it so now you can go back to college ball? That is ridiculous and wouldnt even like it if our own guys were allowed to do that. Opens the door to too many other things..so what if Jeremiah Smith gets drafted by a team he doesnt like..can he petition the courts, get a friendly judge in Ohio and go back and play for OSU for his 4th year? Its just too much of a loophole for other things to get through imo.
 
Let’s say the bill passes even with the moody amendment. That’s a major source of leverage gone. I don’t think we’d have a take a SMU deal, but we might not get the same one we could get without this constraint.

Nobody is reading the novel that you wrote, but if you are trying to sell Louisville, SMU, and Stanford as legitimate media rights draws then you are insane.
