Post Game Recap: Temple

One thing needs to be pointed out: This is a very mature football team. Temple got more and more chippy, talked smack and tried to provoke us into making stupid things at the end of the first half.

The response was a seven play drive, gashing Temple back on their *** and then proceeding to end the game for the starters running the football from our 28 to their 28 en route to another TD.

Plus: Adjustments were mad in the second half defensively, less coverage breakdowns, less experimenting with rover coverage, just match defense defending the sticks and making plays on the ball. Pass offense was very vanilla IMO, as the gameplan was to pound the ball in tricky conditions and we did just that. Happy with the result, nobody got hurt, two weeks to heal before we enter the ACC schedule.

The secondary is the unit that pays for the inability to get pressure off the edge. Blitzing creates more windows. We need a consistent pass rush from the front 4.

Watching payton dominate for FSU is killing me.

I can't evaluate the pass rush based on how we get held on every single pass rush at the point of attack. Thats how bad it has gotten.
Temple had surrendered one sack through the first three games and we sacked Warner three times. There was a ton of holding but their entire offense revolves around him throwing the ball in under 2 seconds

Thought Jaden got victimized a little in the pass game. Some of our zones have left a lot to be desired as well at times but also have been beating the *** of everyone while also being vanilla most of the time so can’t really complain much there.

Wonder what we do vs UNC, Clem, FSU when they go 4-5 wide. Curious what formations we counter with on defense or stick with primarily nickel package w/zones behind the stunting line

There’s a couple drives I wish we could’ve gotten back.

In the 2nd quarter we had a chance to go up 21-0 but Tyler missed X on the same exact route as the first TD. I would have loved to see him throw the ball at the front pylon soon as the slant cleared.

The second drive was the holding call on Mark’s TD.

We settled for field goals on both possessions.
Felt that the wind may have caused it to drift. TVD doesn't usually miss that bad. Mario said the wind affected the ball away a few times.

Davis is CB 1. The question now is do we have a CB 2. So far, it's not looking pretty.

Also. Mario calling a TO to avoid a 5 yard delay of game penalty on a 26 yard FG has me smh.

Mario is the worst with burning TO

Need to the offense to keep putting up 35+ points. Not sure this defense holds up against better competition. We lack any type of pass rush skills by our d-line.

We struggle to cover RB. Good offenses will expose our defense until we get Kam and hopefully at some point Deen/Mesidor back.

Would like to see chase smith get more burn. Chantz offers nothing at DE. Maybe he can set the edge on obvious running plays but that’s it. We really need Kelly to get healthy and step up along with Wayne to keep getting better each week. Bain has been great but we really miss having an elite pass rush specialist anywhere on our roster for dline.

Maybe arroyo will be back by UNC. Need to handle business against Tech and then get ready for our hardest game of the year against UNC on the road.

Coleman is who you need to stop. Wilson looked like trash yesterday.
Both are top quality receivers (they had 180 yards combined). Clemson DBs generally did a good job yesterday against the FSU passing game.

Coleman's the better of the two by far but I'd take Wilson in a heartbeat. At 6'7, he's a problem -- even with occasionally inconsistent hands.

Lmao my guy, just wearing me out here 😂

For the record, I only asked about Skinner. I never doubted your opinion that blocking comes first at that spot.

HOWEVER…again, Jackson Carver Ranches played late in the game, and Skinner didn’t get a snap. Safe to say he’s on his way out at this point. And it can’t be just because he’s not a good blocker. But I digress…we’ll let it play out.

Another point I wanted to highlight, I asked a couple people after the game and you said it too, I don’t think TVD was touched the entire time. Is that possible? He played into the 4th quarter and they got ZERO QB hits? Buddy doesn’t even need to wash his jersey. Just mind-boggling dominance in pass pro by this OL thru a third of the season. This is the best OL we’ve had in 20 years? Just incredible.
The O line wins games in College football. I just love watching the Brutes going down field on plays. Sometimes I missed the player with the ball because I’m watching the O line absolutely demolish the D. during the Temple game I was just smiling at the play of them. Mario really did good year 2 so far but we still have weaknesses that are apparent. Can’t have best slot receiver handling returns. Big no no but we have no choice? One bad hit and we lose R.

Receivers like Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson? Don't think so.
Many were concerned with how we matched up with the A&M receivers. They got yards but didn't take over the game.

I guess the question is after a third of the season has been played, does anyone now think that the FSU's receivers are on another level? I get it about Coleman, he's going to be a handful, but I'm talking about the receiver group as a whole.

I think Coleman is real good. Wilson is a big guy. I just dont know if our secondary can match up with the size of FSUs WRs. getting Kam back will be huge for that game

Idk.

We have Lofton committed for the 24 class, but have missed on other targets we were after at that spot.

I keep reading we’re going to be incorporating Arroyo into the Offense, but I’m not so sure I believe it.

Only time will tell.
I think, as others have posted the primary role of blocking for our TEs thus far, this is the skill that'll get our TEs drafted higher. We may miss out on flashier pass catching TEs who may not block, but we'll hit on those who see the long term picture (being drafted, being well rounded) and the importance of blocking. Also, these types bring that team first mentality MariZo is trying to cultivate.

A lot of people laughed at me. Who’s laughing now?
