Post Game Recap: GTech

View attachment 260432

Offense:

Tyler Van Dyke - 24/36 288yds 1TD & 3INT’s

Don Chaney - 23car 103yds

Xavier Restrepo - 12rec 123yds

Colbie Young - 4rec 56yds

Jacolby George - 2rec 45yds

Riley Williams - 1rec 22yds & 1TD

Offense gained 454 total yards (288 passing & 166 rushing) off 82 plays at 5.5 yards per play, getting 23 1st downs, going 8/16 on 3rd downs, with 35:18 in time of possession.

First half was a defensive stalemate. GTech playing with house money came out with nothing to lose & played inspired. They sold out to stop the pass & played with a chip on their shoulder coming off an embarrassing loss last weak. They were giving it everything they had & we were mostly on cruise control in the first half...

Really bad decisions by TVD on the INT by the Jacksonville kid LaMiles Brooks. (He had a good game, played very well in coverage against us). Then again, Amhari Harvey the Tallahassee kid made a great play on the ball to get the 2nd pick for GTech’s Defense. Their Secondary did a good job with our WR’s for most of the game, with the exception of Restrepo in the Slot.

TVD ‘s biggest flaw in his game is undisciplined eyes, he tends to stare down his WR’s & will lock in one target early in the route & will let it rip even when the throw isn’t always there. Most of time it works, but sometimes, we get games like tonight...

Nice play call on the 47yd post route by Restrepo at the end of the 3rd quarter, unfortunately the momentum from that play was negated by another bad decision by TVD throwing his 3rd pick of the game. Again, he didn’t see the CB & made a bad throw.

Very good play call by Dawson to dial up the 57yd Deep shot to Colbie Young.

We had a TE sighting, Riley Williams with a nice run after the catch to score the first TD of the game. Nice to see a TE do something other than Block.

Don Chaney played the best game of his career, he ran hard & was the most consistent in finding running lanes & getting positive net gain yardage, props to him.

But overall the DC change worked for GTech, Kevin Sherrer put together a very good game plan against us & slowed down everything we liked to do. Even with the turnovers & mistakes made, we still had the game won, but of course like it always happens against GTech in Miami we figured out a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Congrats to Mario, he’s joined an illustrious group of 3 other previous Miami coaches that had inexplicable gut-wrenching losses to GTech. He’s a true Canes Coach now, it’s a rite of passage...

Defense:

Kam Kinchens - 7tks & 1PD

Francisco Mauigoa - 4tks 1.5TFL’s & 1INT

KJ Cloyd - 4tks & 0.5TFL’s

Branson Deen - 4tks 1.5TFL’s & 0.5 sacks

Wesley Bissainthe - 3tks

Rueben Bain - 3tks 1 sack & 1TFL

Jaden Davis - 3tks

Nyjalik Kelly - 2tks

Jahfari Harvey - 2tks

Daryl Porter Jr - 2tks

Te’Cory Couch - 1tk

Keontra Smith - 1tk

James Williams - 1tk & 1INT

Jared Harrison-Hunte - 1tks & 1TFL

Defense was absolutely stout, holding GTech to just 61yds in the 1st half & 250yds total for the game. Allowing just 4,3 yards per play, keeping them at 5/13 on 3rd down while getting 5TFL’s & forcing 2 turnovers.

Defensive chess match in the 1st half, we played a lot of Double High Safeties on the backend to keep everything in front of us & allow the DL time to get to the QB. The DLine played excellent, Run Defense once again held another team under 100yds rushing; in fact, we haven’t allowed a single 100yd rusher all season long.

Leonard Taylor didn’t rack up a bunch of stats, but his impact was noticeable. He created a ton of interior pressure & was collapsing the pocket all game long. Great job by Kelly, Bain & Deen in flushing King out of the pocket which forced him to make a bad erratic throw getting Mauigoa the INT. Bain, Deen, Taylor, Kelly & Harvey all had great games in disrupting King’s rhythm & keep him off schedule for the most part.

Mauigoa & Cloyd played really well IMO, they were active all over the field assisting in stopping the run game & did a good job dropping back in coverage against the pass.

I’m not allowed to give my honest critique of the CB’s, so we’ll save that for another day...

James Williams with a great read out of the deep 3rd shell in Single-High to get the pick.

Kam Kinchens got cooked really bad & misread the route on the Leary TD, he was supposed to maintain depth in his shell & play over top, for whatever reason he panicked trying to make a play & came in way too steep on a bad angle & got worked. Glad to see him come back from his injury, but that was a bad play & big mistake on his part.

Overall Defensively, we did enough to win, the only thing I think went unaccounted for was King’s running. He was given way too much respect with our LB drops & allowed free reign to run as much as he wanted. Now a lot of his runs were out of necessity due to the pocket being collapsed by our aggressive DLine, but some of his other designed runs were easy pick ups for him because we simply weren’t playing to contain him & I’m not sure why that adjustment wasn’t made. It was the only aspect of their Offense that was really working.

Now to how this thing was lost...

One of the most boneheaded decisions made by a Miami Coach since the Onside kick against UVA in 2018. GTech has no timeouts & the game is over, all we had to do is kneel it, but of course the most Miami thing ever happens; Yes I believe we got screwed by the refs on a bad call where the runner is clearly down, but then we go full prevent Defense & in 3 plays give up a Deep ball TD. The decision to run it was made because they were trying to get Chaney over a 100yds & congratulations, because they did.

However, we should’ve never been put in that position, there was really no other choice to be made other than to take a knee & get the win, but this is something that has happened before to our patron Saint HC

Really tough loss, but this falls squarely on the HC’s shoulders. What matters more than anything will be how we respond to this moment; there should be no pointing fingers & NO EXCUSES made, just be accountable & FIX IT.

@ball915 called it, this was the classic Canes trap game, 17.5 point favorite, coming off a bye week debuting new Miami Nights jersey’s against a bad GTech team that had to change their DC for getting embarrassed by Bowling Green the week before & we figured out a way to lose...

I’ve been saying it a lot & I’ll repeat it again, @ UNC is going to be the toughest game we play this year & now coming off a crushing loss like this just intensifies the circumstances surrounding the game even more. We’re going to go up against the best QB we’ll play all year with an impactful Offense loaded with playmaker WR’s & a really good RB. The Defense is going to have to play well above their means in order to slow down that high-octane attack & their best strength is our biggest weakness Defensively, the Deep ball.

Either way, we’re going to have regroup go back to the drawing board & get it corrected, because next week will be a season defining game; it’s time to put the big boy pants on & man up. Whether you believe it or not, the season hinges on it, we lose to UNC & the Clemson, NC ST, FSU & LVille games will carry that much more weight on the morale & confidence of the team to perform in big moments which can affect the tenor of the rest of the season adversely.

The only option to get beyond this loss is to beat UNC, so we’re going to see exactly what this team is made of, this one’s on you Mario, show us what ya got...

Go Canes

I myself want to start a thread but it would be nothing venting pure frustration at the sheer magnitude of boneheaded, stubborn, jackassed incompetence that we have ever seen from the Canes. It seems like each successive coach and team combine to have the uncanny superpower of digging an even deeper hole than our wildest imagination.

@Memnon thanks for the write up brother. It’s level headed and speaks only to the facts. Much respect for that. I may be projecting but it feels like you held back a lot of negativity and frustration despite having the Library of Alexandria to choose from.

Appreciate it.

And yes, it’s an absolute cavalcade of ***** ups by our Coaches for decades now, like I said, it’s a rite of passage lol

And I definitely did hold back a lot because despite how bad the game was, we did enough to win & tbh this is a bad loss but it’s not an unrecoverable loss. IF we can figure out a way to slow down UNC’s lethal Offense & pull off a win next week all we be forgiven on my end.

I’m not sure if that actually happens, but I’m fair enough to wait & see what how it plays out.

You are 100% right. We have to see how we play against UNC.

The biggest issue though is we’ve seen this story play out so many times as Canes fans. We have 1 bad loss against a team that we have no business losing to only to completely lay down and have any team with a pulse put up school/conference records against us.

Let’s hope the team has more substance than that though.

I don’t say much about JDavis because I was against his take from the Portal in the offseason.

I’ve stated that he’s slow & has a lot of difficulty defending against the Deep ball & was met with quite a bit of backlash.

I give him credit for his TAMU game because he played really well & does a good job in short area coverage against routes that are 15 yards or less, but what has gone unnoticed because many people have just overlooked it, but coming into this game he had given up 11 catches & 115yds on 19 targets which is a 57% catch conversion rate. So add onto this game & that would put him at the top of most targets & most yards surrendered thus far amongst the CB’s.

But if I say that people will perceive that as me hating on him & trying to be right, so I just don’t say anything at all.

Hopefully, he has another good game next week, because he & the rest of the Secondary are gonna have their hands full against UNC.

Well ill say it......Tecoury Couch has the worst ball skills of any of our dbs. I dont care how many picks he has either....unless that sh*t is coming directly to him if he has to make a play on it ...its toast.

I said b4 the year i thougt DP Jr would be a starter and likely the best one its been true so far.

The crazy part is the next coming games will 100 percent expose the cbs. Mainly Davis and Couch.

The taunting on Flagg was pretty bad too. I was honestly surprised when they called his number.
i honestly thought it was on #23 BECAUSE thought maybe he did a throat slash or something peculiar but to see it on Flagg...was a lil off. Especially since the guy who called it was like 10 yds away..... For all we know Flagg couldve said good game or something..

Me too. Had to have said something “inappropriate”. That crew just looked for any reason to throw it flag it seemed.

It’s what I’ve been worried about all year, UNC’s greatest strength is our CB groups worst weakness.

Their WR group is deep & Maye is Deep ball tactician, it’s the best throw he makes & Chip Lindsey is a very aggressive play caller. I’m guessing we’ll sit back a lot in Double-High & play a ton of Cover 2 & Cover 4 Zones.

But UNC is gonna be the toughest matchup we’ve had to face Defensively.

All ik the coaches and players gonna have to step up. ACC is not weak by any means. There’s a few terrible teams but besides that…UNC, DUKE, FSU, Clemson, Louisville. All games we could easily lose if UM plays like they did against GT.

We were fully exposed last night.
Mids run game
Oline depleted
TvDud and restrepo only
Mario.

Defense good, but not capable of stopping a well coached and_or talented team for a whole game.

ATM showed us that, but offense clicked too.

Offense has been figured out and TVDud is just that.

49-10 UNC
Boatraced v Clemson, FSU, UL

BC, NCST, are GTesque

Maybe UVA puts up a fight.
7-5 ceiling

Bruh your avi makes die laughing every time lol

I hope the first thing Mario did was go in the locker room and apologize to the team and took all the blame. He had kids on the sideline crying, blaming themselves and questioning the staff.

I’ve been hard on TVD but back off since the aTm game. This has been the most pressure/hit TVD had face all year and the pocket was still clean 90% of the time. But he reverted back to 2022 TVD tonight and played like sh*t. I judge QB by when things are not perfect and they still make the right play. TVD doesn’t do that but every one has a bad night. I hope he rebounds

The last drive will take away a great game the defense played but there is still issues and mainly on the secondary. The defensive staff need figure out how to contain scrambling QB. King made most of plays with his legs and this has be consistent issue every game.

As the game went on I started to have that dreadful feeling that we were going to lose this game. It was playing out as a game where we find a way to lose and as I let my guard down. We found a way to lose.

At the end of the day. Mario lost this game.. point blank

Sorry for the essay… Great recap my brother
Fully agree here, the biggest step we all were expecting from TVD was developing his read progressions. He's still struggling, even throughout the season, but this game puts it on full display. He has to know that what they were expecting coverage wise during the last two weeks can be completely different come game-day, especially with a new DC playcaller. Once he notices the change, this is where his read progressions would've help him numerous times as the 2nd and 3rd options were open all night instead of forcing throws.

Even with all I just said, I truly still hope and (slightly) believe he can regroup and take this as a learning lesson as to what will come from opposing defenses (not exact, but similar picture).

Also, although I entirely agree this falls on Mario and he'd admit that in an instant, I will state my peace anyway on the refs. TVD doesn't throw his 1st INT if not for the egregious holding call on Anez Cooper for Parrish TD run. Cooper had textbook technique of hands right on the chest-part of the shoulder pads. This results to 0 points. The roughing the passer on either 2 or 3rd down against Fransico, when the RB BLANTANTLY chopped him and he jumped (lunges because of momentum) to avoid getting his knees blown-out and falls into the QB legs because of it. This results in 15 yards and a new fresh set of downs, in which GT scores a TD instead of a field goal. And lastly, the fumble (when yes, we should've taken a knee) where you have the nerve to review and establish that the play stands. During the replay you can clearly see the elbow down, and the question was, "well is it definitive that the ball was coming out prior?" Well, if you look, you can clearly see nothing is moving until the GT player yanks his arm back to rip the ball to CAUSE THE FUMBLE, but guess whatt??? That's after Chaney's elbow was down and he was rolling onto it. Everyone has their homer takes, but this officiating clearly needs to be reviewed by the ACC, which this does nothing but hurt them by Miami losing.

I'll end it on this, I genuinely believe I will one day develop a frontal lobe aneurism for shouting at my TV every game I see Couch in coverage. I truly hate to single him out because I tried rooting for the kid, but he's as high-risk high-reward as they come (leaning heavily more on risk even dating back to the diaz era...think of the FSU 3rd and 14, or maybe 4th but you knw what I'm talking bout). The first deep play after the fumble he has a chance to break this play up OR make the play and end the game. Ok, as a player you want to make the play and I get it. But if you go for it, MAKE THE M***%$$% F@#&&*& PLAY. Instead, he jumps as if his cleats have cement soles in them. This isn't the first time this season he's done this either and it will keep happening as long as he's out there. They won't publicly admit, but Damari should take this role by the end of the year or they need to move Jaden Davis to this spot due to it fitting his style of play more. With that said, Kitchens shouldn't get let off the hook, where he gambled (shades of early last year) and it cost us. That error falls on him and the coaches, they should be letting him and Williams know, NOTHING GETS BEHIND YOU NO MATTER WHAT. The QB been cheeks all game, don't turn him into something he's not.

Actually, one last thing, this will be THE MOST unpopular opinion, and you knw what, F%% it....but even though Mario claims the run wasn't to get Chaney to 100 yards, we all know d*mn well that's exactly what it was and it cost us. But at the end of the day, it still shows that this is a coach that will do whatever he can to reward and see his players get their victories as well. Yes, this time it cost us the game, but in reality how often does that fumble really happen (mopes please don't answer because you know there's the slightest chance, especially if Chaney just puts both hands on the ball get a yard and drops)? Chaney has been a model teammate and has faced as much injury adversity as anyone on the team and battled back. Mario was looking out for him and I guarantee if they called a time out and asked the whole team what we should do, everyone would've said, get him 100 coach, he deserves it, that's what true BROTHERHOOD is (if you didn't play football or any other team sport please don't comment, because you genuinely wouldn't understand). Hopefully, the team stays together on that and allows it to fuel their fire as "THEM AGAINST EVERYONE ELSE"

I know i'll prolly get yawns and negative reactions because of my short novel but oh well....I still believe that this can be the lost that sets this team straight into GUTTA MODE.

Go CANES

UNC is going to go right at Couch. Put him in a bind all game. Guidry will do what he can to protect Davis, but Couch, psssh, if there was ever a time to buckle the F%$k up, now will be the time for him. Which I truly hope he does, cause I wanna see him win consistently but as Coach Perk use to say, "Boy, got d**n you sure as h*ll know how to F**k up a wet dream"

“Show us what you ‘ve got” indeed. Quite a bit riding on next week.
IMO the season rides on next week...

We lose & it’s all downhill from there, we win & we’re still right in the thick of it to possibly win the ACC.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to rise to the occasion, because UNC does everything we struggle with defensively & have a very high-powered aggressive Offense.

It will be the biggest test of resolve & fortitude for this team & Coaching staff.

Going to have to play their best game in all 3 phases and overcome the home cooking from the tobacco road refs.

Go Canes

Why do you believe the Deep ball is our biggest weakness? Kam and JW loving to jump routes under leaving deep to open OR CB play?

I actually have thought our CB play has been better overall than last year. We may not have the talent of TS but Porter and Davis have played well and Couch has improved.

Why not give Richards and the brown boys more reps
That’s a question I ask myself...

With Richards I get it because he’s not really a true CB to begin with, he also struggles with speed issues, but he can play at STAR/Nickel as in the box defender.

The Brown brothers is a bit of head scratcher to me as well, it appeared they were going to be starting coming into the season & now they can’t even get on the field.

I’m personally not too crazy about Addae’s coaching or recruiting, but I guess they’re sticking with who they believe handles the Corner spots the best.

We’ll see how it works out as we go through the rough patch of the ACC schedule.
