Post Game Recap: Clemson

I mean to me it is.
Eh I don't know.

Like you might be right regarding statistically I just don't like it as a way to operate. Against comparable competition I think going 3 and out really handicaps us, and even if we score fast, less time for the defense to recover and now we're potentially behind and now we're all out of whack.

I just think the cost of too high when we could take our time and win and score anyway.

You presume we can't go 3 & out while going slow & methodical? Actually, the slower pace you go increases the % of going 3 & out exponentially.

You can take your time & go slow against weak teams with bad Defenses. When it championship time, you better be able to strike fast & score quick or else you'll be playing panic ball late in the game because you're playing from behind in a deficit. Which then gives the opposing Defense the advantage because it limits your play calls & makes it harder for your protection schemes.

Not to mention, this year's OL isn't a group I would chance it too much with trying to Bullyball in crunchtime. I don't think you want playoff caliber Defenses tee'in off against this OLine when our backs are against the wall & we have to drive the length of the field to win a game.

We've been able to play the way we play thus far this season because we get an early comfortable lead & let our Defense hunt in the 3rd & 4th quarter. That dynamic changes against good teams coming down the stretch in a one score game.

Right, I don't disagree with you vs less talented team.
I don't think pace matters either way vs those teams, since we'll score no matter what. I don't disagree on the last two paragraphs, but again talent level, which we both agree on. And to be fair we both want us to be up ahead and early

I don't know statistically if fast pace (I'm assuming seconds between snaps) equals more points or vice versa. Sounds like you do. Which I'm not arguing that, but again is that statistics against same talent level. I'm playing devil's advocate a little to have intelligent football conversation. I do think we should be able to go at both places.

I'm looking at it from a team possession amount and time of possession. We went faster vs Clemson but we had more snaps then we normally do. I think Mario would rather have the offense have 80 snaps a game with the defense having 40, so they're always fresh and the opposing offense is cold. I also think he understands the game has to have explosive plays too. It's a fine balance and really it's a bit of an artwork and hard to do esp daily against equal or better talent.

Seeing how we started to run on a football teams defense that had some good players on the first and second level in the 4th was another tell that we're right at the top. Six years ago, Clemson could line up in whatever Mug look they wanted and it would be instant pressure with no run game for us that we could've used.

Now, we block it up correctly, we have a QB that can get drilled and still complete passes and we can hand the football off and let a freshman do work. How times have changed. Three years ago, we jumped up and down about beating Clemson in OT, on Sunday we expected our team to kick the **** out of them. And they did, with a boatload of key players not playing or being subbed out for injury.

There's something different about this team. I've always said we're our biggest opponent and we have been, because we lacked some mental fight in the past to overcome tough situations and equally do business against lesser opponents. We've done both now facing tremendous physical challenges. I'm excited. We can do it all whilst getting healthier.

i love the rushing yards against clemson ... but unc ran for 215 @ a 5.5yd clip ...

I liked what I saw from Day.

I think he has the foot speed & movement ability in open space to play Rover or Nickel. I'd love to see him get more in the 2-deep rotation & be on the field in 3-High Safety looks from Cover 4 & Cover 6 split coverages.

He had a great read on a play coming down hill to make a tackle on the RB in the Flats.

Thornton was Thornton.

Good Blitzer, not so much good at the other stuff.

I'm gonna give thronton his props after seeing that he led the team in tackles that game. Everyone focuses on this whiff (understandably), but i'm not going to dogpile on the kid.

**** Has anyone else had a problem with this post (page 1 specifically) loading in the app? ****

I could not get Memnon's original post to load....the app would just crash out. I'm guessing it's a combination of the amount of graphics combined with my iPhone3 that I still use cuz I'm old and cheap, but I do all the updates....

I have an iPhone13, but the rest of what I wrote is true. Any insight? Thoughts? Help? Maybe???

Let loose of some of that moldy money and upgrade your phone.

I personally think its because we know Clemson has basically not been passing past 10 yards much this season... **** not even much past 5 yards till us tbh. Significant amount of their passes this season were at the LOS. That to me kinda means Thorntons weaknesses that you don't want him back at safety for are kinda ignored, but also just a general gameplan you probably don't want your nickel blitzing in as much. And him at safety let him pursue downhill all game with a more trusted tackler at the nickel. So I think it was specifically due to Clemsons offensive scheme and more safety blitzes against the team that wanted to get it to their WRs quickly.

For Stats, We blitzed Clemson only like 40% of the time whereas we blitzed Wake 60% and Stanford 50%.
Thornton specifically was rushing passer 15.6% of the time against Stanford and 30.4% of the time against Wake. then 11.3% against clemson (and poyser rushed only 5.9% at nickel this game showing diff in blitz rate with Thornton at Nickel in other 2 games).
Good stats. Facts are nice when people complain we blitz Thornton "on every play".

We get carried away with
1. Great juke by Fletcher. Broke that guys ankles.
2. How'd Thornton miss that guy?

I've been watching a long time. Not winning every engagement folks.
Roger Federer makes a speech where the 20 time grand slam winner tells people he won 54% of his points thru his career. Lost 46%.

Happens to me because he has me blocked.

I don’t think OJ is coming back this season tbh.

Assuming you mean XL & Slime.

RCB - EOC/ Ryan Mack
NCB - Fitzgerald/ Dylan Day
LCB - Lucas/ Ja'Boree Antoine

EOC played LCB for most of the Clemson game, but he's been a Lockdown Corner at Right-side.

Ryan Mack being a hybrid CB/Safety allows for a little more flexibility on the outside where we can put Fitz at Nickel & solve the Nickel coverage issue we have with Thornton.
How do you see the safety rotation working itself out once XL and Antoine come back?

Before the season, it seemed like foregone conclusion that OJ and XL would go to the NFL after this year. Is that still the thought, even though both have had injuries?
Both Poyser and EOC could declare too, but hoping they are planning to stay.

Provided we don’t lose any unanticipated players, our secondary is going to be filthy for years to come, with Sears, Wright, Hall amongst others.
