Post-camp thoughts

I know D said the offense won't be more "efficient" with Carson Beck unless I read that wrong. But I actually think it will be more efficient. It won't be as explosive but I think Beck will take what the defense is giving him. Like those check downs that Ward ignored. Which I also think cost us a chance at beating GT and Syracuse. Don't get me wrong though. Cam Ward was the best thing to happen to us and I have utmost respect for him and his game.
Do the people who say this know we were the most efficient offense by far? Like it was one of the best offenses of the last 10 years and yall keep saying it will get more “efficient” lmao

And blaming cam for Syracuse is just insane

Not sold on WR.

I believe in Toney and them, but I still need to see it at this level.

Every DC stacking the box til they prove otherwise.
This. First game will reveal a lot. Regardless of how it rates statistically, Dawson needs some diversity in the run game. Teams like ND aren't going to get gashed by dives out the Pistol. They're going to mug tf out of Toney and CJ too, hopefully Jojo is on Gray as I think he's the weakest corner they have.

I understand the sentiment here. But having a grizzled vet with tons of talent like Beck is exactly what we need for these guys.

Cam Ward changed the perception of this program. I think Beck turns these receivers into stars and gets Miami taken seriously as a destination for top receiver prospects.

Ward couldn't have the same impact on the actual team because the receiver rotation was small, senior- heavy and the underclassman transferred. These guys will still be here when Beck leaves. Sets up well get our receiver recruiting to an elite level. We already have the transfer quarterback game on lock.

As we shift to game week, I wanted to share some of my big picture thoughts from camp. This is based on my personal observations and sources.

- There's real confidence in Coral Gables. Everybody was excited last year, but there were deep concerns at defensive back. This year, there’s no glaring deficiency coming out of camp. That doesn’t mean the team is perfect, and the adversity of a college season will expose holes. But most veteran observers (myself included) believe this is the most complete roster in a couple decades.

- The biggest difference between this year and last year is the talent at defensive back. I believe this will be one of the best cornerback rooms in America. OJ Frederique had a great summer after a Freshman All-American season. Xavier Lucas and Damari Brown are 6+, 200+ pounders who can run. Ethan O’Connor turned down Georgia after picking off four passes as a freshman. This is a long, athletic group with good instincts. Charles Brantley would have been a slam-dunk starter last year and he might be #5.

- We also have a true nickel in Keionte Scott. Last year, Daryl Porter (a natural outside corner) took one for the team and moved inside. Scott is someone who majors in nickel and has NFL size/speed.

- Safety isn’t as spectacular as corner, but it's significantly improved. Zechariah Poyser and Jakobe Thomas are SEC-caliber safeties who can tackle. Bryce Fitzgerald might be the best athlete on the team. If he tackles on gameday, he won't leave the field. Bobby Pruitt can help at S and LB. Dylan Day and Markeith Williams are capable depth as well. This time last year, we were hoping for a Zaquan Patterson breakthrough. The room is a much better place now.

- The other big story is Carson Beck. He looks like a first round pick. His game has a nice combination of power and finesse. He’s a former third baseman who can drive the ball, but he also has some Dorsey in him. The ball leaves his hands fast. I don’t think we’ll be more “efficient” on offense- Ward’s offense was the best in America by a mile- but we should be very good.

- I have no concerns about our offensive line and running backs. They look the part and play the part. We should run the ball as well as anybody in America.

- At receiver, the most talented players are young guys like JoJo Trader, Josh Moore and Malachi Toney. We’ve seen it on Greentree, but they'll need to prove it in games. The safest bet to me is Toney. I think he leads the team in receiving. The veteran transfers (CJ Daniels, Keelan Marion, Tony Johnson) raise our floor. I expect all three to play against Notre Dame, and they have winning attitudes. Chance Robinson is a homegrown player trending in the right direction. He’s a big body who can get open and move the chains.

- I don’t think one player will replace Elijah Arroyo. His ability to get downfield at 6'4, 250 is rare. But this is a solid group. Elija Lofton is a complete player who will have a huge impact on the offense. I still think his NFL future is in the backfield. Tulane transfer Alex Bauman has bulked up and brings experience in the red zone. Freshman Luka Gilbert is massive (6’7, 265) and coordinated. He’ll play early.

- We’re starting to look the part on the defensive line. Many around the Hecht believe Rueben Bain will have a superstar season in this defense. Akheem Mesidor is a sixth-year player with real production (36 career TFLs and 23 sacks). He’s in great shape and playing his more natural outside spot. The guy who deserves more hype is David Blay, the Louisiana Tech transfer. He’s added weight and is generating buzz with NFL scouts. Blay is not an elite athlete, but he doesn’t stay blocked and battles double teams. The former five stars have all flashed throughout camp. For me, the safest bet in that group is Armondo Blount. He’s only 18 and has the total package of size, speed, power, nastiness and IQ.

- We’ve come a long way physically at linebacker since the Manny years. Mo Toure is the prototype, and Wesley Bissainthe has bulked up from 190 to a lean 230. Both guys have tons of experience. There’s more depth in the room, too. Kamal Bonner and Jaylin Alderman were ACC starters, Popo Aguirre played a bunch last year, Chase Smith is a fifth-year guy, and the freshmen Kellen Wiley (6’4, 238) has NFL tools.

- At kicker, the battle continues. Bert Auburn has made a lot of kicks in big games. Carter Davis is less experienced with field goals but has top-of-the-scale leg strength. His upside and improvement has made this a much closer battle than reported.

Overall, I share the confidence of the staff. This is a good and balanced team. I won't try to evaluate Corey Hetherman as an amateur watching from the sideline, but everyone is raving and the defense looks more connected to my untrained eye. If that side makes a 2016-type leap, and Beck stays healthy, this team will be a contender.
No Daylyn Upshaw mention eh?

I really cannot see a way that we lose to Notre Dame, I still believe we will fumble a game in the season somewhere but I don’t think ND or UF is one of them.

I’m very excited about this offense.

- Beck is going to shine imo, Toney coming on gives us depth at Slot, Lofton will be a very valuable piece that I think will be utilized almost similar to DJ Dallas except with more Blocking/inline work, I LOVED what Dallas brought to the offense and I think Lofton can be similar, Lyle/Fletcher/Brown is an excellent trio of backs and if we can run the ball as well as we’re supposed to this offense will reach very very efficient levels and I don’t see how ND can keep up with it, we have premier talent and a PREMIER talent at QB and I think Beck has a heisman like season, he has ALOT of motivation…

- Defensively we were absolutely horrendous in the pass, it was so embarrassing, having a healthy pass rush and a VERY much upgraded secondary with the additions of: Zachariah Poyser - Jakoby Thomas - Xavier Lucas - Charles Brantley - keionte Scott - Bryce Fitzgerald - Chris Ewald & Add the returns of Dylan Day + OJ Frederique + Markeith Williams, I think Etheridge & Harris are gonna turn this group into an ELITE unit. Our Pass rush is going to be GOOD. This scheme plays to our strength and I think Bain/Messidor/Blount/Lowe/Lightfoot absolutely eat.

Correct me if I’m wrong but there are ALOT of players on defense that have been highlighted as vastly improved or expecting to be a contributor but for the right reasons. That’s a testament to the work Hetherman has done playing to his players Stengths, we are hearing more than we even did last year about the D/the expectations. But even with that defense we held the gators to 17 pts and tbh I bet ND fans would prefer to have Mertz or Lagway as their QB right now. Mario gets us ready for big games.

I don’t think ND is shutting our offense down. Not with our OL and QB.

I have a very hard time envisioning this defense getting ate up by Carr/Love, this crowd will be a major factor, ESPECIALLY if we score first or get a big play early.

We need some different comparisons, maybe Herbert Oregon and the 2025 offenses at Clemson and PSU because those are the teams we are bout to pass when Beck outplays Allar and Klubnick this year.
The 2024 offense was a truly elite unit

The talent is there so it doesn't take much, seems almost always college teams with talent fail because of too much complexity rather than too much simplicity so "Good teacher, doesn't overcomplicate things" is all I needed to hear.

I don't think it would take much considering what's around the WR's... Oline, RB's, TE's, and a good QB

My biggest worry is how Beck responds to adversity. Do we get shell shocked Beck from last year, or does he play in the constraints of having a possible elite rushing attack and not press to the degree he did last season?

I won’t allow myself to drink the kool-aid. Last year broke me. I’m just too battered and bruised to believe without seeing anymore.

WR is a major concern. When D$ isn't saying a position is full of AAs, you know the situation is bleak. Safety, LB, and DT have questions, as well.

Overall it's a good team that should win 10 games again.

You could change the names and copy and paste this as a template for this version of Dmoney’s post every year. I don’t see it. Only thing I’m confident in is the running game. The rest is all hypothetical. Receiver and linebacker I think we have a lot of JAGs. Feel better about CB but not Safety. D Line is the classic where we have Jags who are gonna play over blue chips who eventuallly transfer

Hate to be Debbie Downer and would love to be wrong. But this year has 8-4 written all over it and a staring contest as we look at what we will be under Mario. Better than we’ve been, and sort of within striking distance, but gonna lose two dumb games minimum every year.

I LOL'ed at your first line.

I remember him hyping us up before the Bama game in 2021. After that, I've better calibrated my interpretation of his analysis. If he's not raving about a position, it's likely average or worse.

Beck was on the road at Alabama down 25 and brought them back to take the lead. Stop reading the anti miami press clippings. He is the best QB in college this season and had he not gotten hurt he woulda been the second, maybe 1st, QB off the board.

It’s been my impression that this is the most complete roster Mario has had. Which is why I’ve been more bullish than most on our recruiting and the direction of the program. I’m not quite ready to declare it a playoff team simply because it’s a tough schedule, I’d like to see our D in actual games, and I’m not quite sure we got at WR. As much as I like us adding Thomas and Poyser. I’m a little on the fence about their coverage and whether one of the like Thomas wouldn’t be better playing in the box more.

That said I’d heard nothing but great things about Toure and Blay. If those 2 can be impact players on top of elite DB’s and then Bain and our edges I feel pretty good about our D.

To me it’s intriguing hearing the buzz tho coming out of camp just because it is a tough schedule. Yet there feels like real expectations to perform and in that case there might be some real looks at Mario if we don’t live up to it.
It’s actually not that tough of a schedule. We don’t leave Florida for the first two months of the season and Pittsburgh and VTECh are nothing to write home about.
