POOR ACADEMICS

Miami is back to being Suntan U. I spend a lot of time on campus and there are significantly fewer nerds now than when Shalala was UPREZ. Hot girls in sports bras and yoga pants everywhere you look must make it tough to concentrate.

Without debating the merits and methodology of these rankings, I'll just say none of this is surprising. Go back to when my namesake handed the office to Shalala- we were pretty much sitting at or around the top 50 mark.

Lump UiF in with us and I think you can assume swings that put us both around 40 on occasion or in the other direction and around 55 as we are now. The top 35 schools are pretty much set and they just jostle for position and then you have the second tier type national schools that jostle for 35-60.

The ONLY thing surprising here and I highly doubt it's credible or lasting is FSU skyrocketing.

In the US News for best universities, Miami has dropped in ranking to 55 and tied with FSU, while the Gayturds have volted to 28. What is going on? We can’t play football and can’t do academics.
I can't believe no one has pointed this out yet - but the pure comedy of someone complaining about academics when they are capable of typing "volted" instead of vaulted is just... chef's kiss. Perhaps you should just sit this one out, Chief.

It's "vaunted", boss. I got a 780 verbal on the SAT when it was real test too so don't talk back to me. 🤪

Don't underestimate how much the state schools are improving.

I have a daughter in college right now and the economics are 100% skewed towards keeping smart Florida kids at in-state Universities. Florida has one of the lowest in-state tuition rates in the Country (2nd lowest last time I checked) and adds a pretty generous Bright Futures Scholarship on top. Going to a private school or even an out-of-state public school can easily add six figures to your degree. I know because I am paying for it for my daughter who desperately wanted to leave the state.

The net result is a lot of smart kids are staying home. That creates a feedback loop where the Universities get better and encourage even more to stay home. There is even a domino affect where kids that used to be eligible for UF and FSU end up at second tier state schools and they get better too.

Considering the economics involved, I am pleasantly surprised that UM can even keep up with those schools. You have to like palm trees a lot to pay an extra 200k for a similar education.

It's great for me because the prestige of my degree is actually higher than it was when I earned it. So bonus.
This is exactly where I'm at right now. She was set on UF purely because of finances. I had to encourage her to apply elsewhere to see what they'd offer.

This. Combined with Florida being a fast growing state. FSU is clearly school #2 on the ranking tier that 99% of Floridians can afford. Their SAT scores have shot up recently and are almost the same as UMs.

Idiot porst.

Your criteria, “Rok nerd eye test” is seriously retarded.

Sit this one out, champ.

That was essentially what we did. Applied to FSU and UF and 11 out of state schools hoping that one of them wanted her bad enough to make it worth her while. She did end up getting some nice scholarship money but it wasn't enough to overcome the difference She ended up at the most cost effective out of state option. It was academically comparable but costs us an extra 30k a year even with the scholarships. Transferring the Florida Prepaid out of state took a real hit to its value so be careful if you have an older version of that program. Plus losing Bright Futures and the out-of-state premiums all add up.

But she really wanted out of Florida. Her high school was really academically minded and was sending a lot of kids to UF and she hated the idea of just going there for 13th grade with all of same old classmates. She is an only child and I felt bad that Covid was really killing her potential experience. So we bit the bullet even though it will cost me six figures.

Gut feeling is that you are probably not going to find a comparable out of state option for less based on our experience.

I won't mention the University she ended up at since I would get a beat down for it here. Just know that UF was the alternative so it was going to be hurtful to this Cane alum no matter what.

How was that first winter in South Bend?

Good guess but wrong school. I said most cost-effective out-of-state option and that certainly wouldn't be ND.

All right, I will fess up that it is the behemoth in Columbus. They have actually been really good to her. And they have turned her into a football fan which has made us closer. Don't kill me for it. it's just one of the things we do for our kids.

And its been two winters now.:shoveling-snow:

The only people that are worried about the USNWR rankings are non-graduates.

Anybody that knows anything about how these metrics are calculated don’t worry about it.

To be fair, when we were ranked by then much higher, the academic smack was flowing while our football team sucked.

Like most things, it's good when it's a plus, but bad when it's negative.

For better or worse, the vast majority of people looking for or at college rankings, that's their starting point. It's what most reference, so metrics be damned, perception becomes reality.

Any intelligent parent will look at field of study rankings when considering a college for their child. We have some good programs, every school does.

I went to Grad school in Cincinnati and paid in-state tuition after my first year… is it the same in Columbus?

Too bad they filled in the pit…many a beer can and some burnt rubbers in there.

They have pretty strict rules that make that hard. It is possible after being there 12 months but you basically have to prove that the student has been financially independent the entire time. Nearly impossible without a lot of work hours and debt accumulation. Not going to work for us in the near term because I want her to mostly concentrate on her studies and I want her to graduate debt free. Maybe by the time she gets to be a Senior but I doubt it.

Even with in-state, Ohio tuition is more than 6k higher than Florida's. Between that and losing Bright Futures it still leaves you more than 12k upside down per year. There are a lot of things I don't love about Florida but the University system is actually set up as a good value relative to other states.
