Podcast with Derrick Smith

If power move guy can't get these Southridge guys then we shouldn't hire him.
power moves lol

I guess we shouldn't have hired Baez. We didn't reap the benefits from his hiring for 2 years. Mullins, Wright and Jackson were two years from signing when he was hired. Burns three years away. I'll take Mark Pope and the two class of 2018 DEs. If Richt has the budget hire as many high school coaches as you need because the traditional recruit a kid and sell your program doesn't work in south Florida as well as it works in other places.

Very greatful that we got him just want to give credit where it is due... if he is the best in Florida than why give leatherwood his stars just because he commits to Alabama

"I love playing football, I love playing the game" All I needed to hear. Not enough guys express this. I feel like this kid is gonna be a really hard worker for us. Glad to have him.

Baez didn't get those guys until later because they weren't available until later. If they were available the year he got hired then he would have signed them.

Why would power move guy need a year to build up momentum with guys he already has a longstanding relationship with? He's with those Southridge guys now, and they're available now. If he can't get guys he coaches now (Davis) then why would we assume he can get guys (Pope) a year later when he hasn't coached them for a year?

I'm all for hiring every big local player in recruiting. But the dude needs to be able to deliver.

Agreed. Hard to ever be one of the best at what you do, without loving what you do.

Smith's highlights remind me of Kenny Phillips. Same size, high points the ball, hits with great leverage. I think Kenny ran a 4.5 at the combine, so there may be a big gap in speed right now, but from a style standpoint he looks a lot like Kenny Phillips.

Great podcast. Smith is going to be an animal. Our defense is stacking. I'm okay with a heavy freshman presence in our DBs next season. But I do think we need Dean in there with Johnson to have some leadership. Redwine in cover 2 safety wouldn't be disastrous. Then rotate in the young guns in Young, Wright, Carter, Smith, Gibson, Bandy.

Solid discussion on 7x7s. Pete, not sure why you are so respectful to Drummond all the time, he's the father of that shady stuff. I'm actually shocked he's not on staff over at one of the SEC schools like Mississippi. Maybe Strong will pick him up over at USF now, lol.

For the more recent posters on here, here's an ESPN article from 2011 on the subject. You'll recognize lots of name: 7-on-7 high school football draws scrutiny of NCAA, high school coaches over fears of third-party influences

Keep it up Pete! Love these podcasts! Now that recruiting season is in full swing I find myself craving them more.

That's what I thought of at first as well.

Why does it sound like this kid is nervous as **** on the podcast? His voice seemed like it was trembling.
