Please help me understand - Mario Cristobal

If people REALLY want to go back to what made Miami great, it was INNOVATION.

Schnelly bringing a pro passing game. Jimmy bringing an aggressive 4-3 defense. Erickson bringing the single-back offense.

We don't need a recruiter. We don't need someone who "understands" South Florida. We need someone who understands X's & O's and how to gameplan. People talk about Alabama's facilities and recruiting. But what gets lost in all that is Nick Saban is one of the best defensive minds of this generation. Bill ******* Bellichick hired him to be his defensive coordinator as soon as he got a head coaching gig. Bama goes into every game with a schematic advantage defensively.

We need that. I want an elite X's & O's guy who can do more with less. THAT is how you recruit.

You know where I stand on everything you just said.

If Mario were to be hired here, I'm trying to understand the willingness to take that risk in light of what some here have stated, as well as the words from FIU fans (yes, there are people who watch all their games; some even enthusiastically).

Yes!!

Thank you!! My thoughts exactly!!

Ill play devil advocate.

1.Built a pretty good staff at FIU with zero amount of finance to hire coaches, etc.. doesnt get credit for that
2.Back-to-back bowl game with a win in one of those. that should be applauded considering FIU was perhaps the worst program in the nation. with non-existent facilities; beat a charlie strong-led Louisville and UCF.
3.Not sure how you could measure what he learned under saban, ima assume **** like time management, how to run a squad, manage players, etc..
4. his recruiting acumen is well-known. perhaps Bama's best recruiter. almost all their impact freshmens were recruited by him e.g Minkah, Ridley, payne.

yes yes yes yes yes this time 1000000

What does he bring other than recruiting?

The biggest thing that worries me is that he does not bring an innovative offense nor a dominating defense. He's never been a coordinator/play caller(unless he called plays at FIU). To my knowledge isn't an X's and O's guru. He isn't mentioned as performing incredibly well as a position coach. He is rumored to be difficult to get a long with. So we would be hiring a coach based on perceived motivational qualities and proven recruiting abilities. Thats not good enough ... not for miami ... and certainly not at this time.

Crickets.

All we got here is a "high-energy" program builder who is a "great recruiter" but never won double digit games. He's Alejandro Golden.

If you called him Coach X and listed only his resumé, you'd be laughed at for suggesting Miami hire him.

"Hey guys, what do you think about hiring Alabama's offensive line coach? Oh yeah he's got some head coaching experience, he did this and then got FIRED from FIU. Fired. From. FIU.

2008 FIU 5–7
2009 FIU 3–9
2010 FIU 7–6
2011 FIU 8–5
2012 FIU 3–9

I can't answer your questions about Mario, but I can bring up one red-flag. It is along the lines of Golden not wanting Perryman, but in reverse. When Golden hired Mario, Mario promptly brought one recruit with him, a young QB. I will leave his name out and would ask that other do the same, because I don't mean to disparage the young man. Needless to say, he was a questionable take. As soon as Mario left, Golden dropped the kid, and I haven't heard of him since.

My point is, I don't care what recruiting title he won for bring kids to the school that is ALWAYS number one in recruiting, I have serious reservations about Mario ability to identify talent. I know it is just one instance, but it stuck out to me then, and I always remember it when people bring up Mario.

And don't bring up the one wr now playing in indie. This is south florida, they grow on trees down here. Even a blind squirrel....

Man I would be a great recruiter if I got to work for Saban at Bama.

That doesn't mean shlt. And fvck "great recruiters" anyway. We've brought in enough talent and failed miserably. If you can't coach it ain't worth a squirt of ****.

Couldnt agree more - is this Mario being a good recruiter or Saban/Bama

Bama was pulling in 5 stars since the beginning of time. Guy is a massive fraud, and it's shameful that he is even mentioned. He shouldn't even be mentioned as a ******* OC for this school.

You know who recruits South Florida well?

Winners.

Why doesn't this get mentioned more? I'm sure Nick Saban's a real ******* that can't recruit. However, he wins, thus he gets the best players.
And South Florida guys are notorious front runners. Not to mention if Miami had been running a good program Saban wouldn't have bothered hiring Cristobal to try and snag a couple of drifters because he wouldn't have had the chance.

Saban is playing a game almost no one could match and Cristobal was a pawn used for a couple of guys per year. Their resources allow it.

This. You took the words out of my mouth and what I've been preaching whenever asked on coaching situation.

Mario IS NOT ready for this job yet.
