Plan for TE position next season?

Since Woodiel is gone, I am good with basically having just blocking TE's and going with 4 wide sets most of the time. Our TE's have had 1,500 yards in Mario's 4 years here. About 1,000 yards in Dawson's 3 years. He just doesn't use them. Make SJ a blocking TE. Then I would be ok with bringing coach Pata back as the TE coach.
I like this, with Mensah at QB next year, coaches won't need to protect our QB and can let loose,we will have about 11 wrs on the team and all talented, time to punish teams next year.

By spreading the TE out you are basically in 10 either way. May as well have a competent pass catcher out there. That or JoJo.
A Y is attached to the Oline. Who said anything about spreading the TE out?

Also you can't just live in one personnel package. You need to be able to get in 10, 11, 12,13, 22, 23 especially with the makings of an elite running game with a huge powerful Oline and Fletcher, Brown, and Pringle at RB.

I'd be all for making Lofton a permanent H-Back. Get his hand out of the dirt. Flex him out occasionally so you go from 20 to 10. He's a decent blocker so if he comes out with 3 WR's and Fletcher teams can't go dime. You'll get some favorable matchups especially against teams with bigger slower LB'ers.

A legit receiving threat at TE would have greatly improved our offense this year, I like Lofton, but we need more of a traditional TE. I wouldnt be surprised if Mueller stepped up as freshman

That’s the word on the streets. Someone on twitter mentioned that Lofton should move to LB. And I’m like…”hmm, I could see it.” Had it not been for how thin the room is I’d say move
Him to LB. He has not really been that effective at TE.

Nice to see his willingness to play another position & stick with the program. Coaches must see enough that they didn’t push him out the door.

Colt McConaughey the kid from Alabama.

Brilliant position switch but he'll need to change his jersey number.

I don’t worry about TE because even with elite talent at the position (Arroyo) Dawson does not run a system that uses the TE well.

35-590 Arroyo 2024
23-218 Lofton 2025

And Arroyo had a 70 and 50+ yard TD if I remember correctly against GT and VT. So really not many targets or production regardless of talent level at the position.

The fact we line up a TE in the slot on passing downs is mind boggling to me.

Arroyo had the fourteenth most receiving yards of any tight end in FBS in 2024. And that was in a year where some tight ends had ridiculous numbers.

Eli Stowers led all FBS tight ends in receiving yards in 2025 with 769. Arroyo’s 590 yards would have made him the #8 tight end in the nation in 2025. Kenyon Sadiq is probably going to be the first tight end drafted this year and he had 560 yards.

Essentially, if your tight end finishes with over 400 receiving yards in a season, he’s getting a lot of use. College football doesn’t usually have 1,000 yard tight ends.

He was 14th in yards and 22nd in catches in 2024.

About 1/3 of his yards came against FCS and Ball State and on 2 plays (VT/GT). TE is an afterthought in this air raid offense. Which is weird because they get the snaps just not the targets. Like I said, Bauman lining up in the slot on passing downs is crazy considering he is most likely not going to get a target and doesn’t really create matchup issues for a defense. Arroyo playing the same position lining up in the slot on passing downs got very few targets and he was much more of a threat than Bauman.

That’s mostly because 2024 was a wild year for tight ends. Multiple 1000 yard receivers and one dude who had over 1500 which is unheard of for a tight end. If you compare Arroyo’s 2024 numbers to pretty much every other season in recent history, they’re significantly better. Elite FBS tight ends are generally averaging around 600-700 yards.
