Plan for TE position next season?

Any ideas on what we are doing there? That was a weakness for our offense all season. I don’t even know if Bauman was a senior this past season but he is not it, at least as a pass catching TE. Lofton is undersized and injury aside, he just looks to be missing something. Schott looked like a promising up and comer but obviously he left. Sure would have been nice to have a consistent TE in the national championship game the other night.

6’0 Lofton and useless Bauman.

Mario pretty good at addressing roster weaknesses so I’m just surprised we never picked anyone up in portal or recruited a little better from high school. Losing Schott stung because while he only got a few reps this season he looked competent and athletic with adequate size for the position. Baumon is an undersized lineman who cannot catch and Lofton is a RB playing TE and doesn’t appear to be near as athletic as we had hoped.

Lofton, Gilbert(likely 245-250), Mueller(255lbs)
I'd love for us to land another in the portal, but I doubt it will happen due to timing. Maybe we see a summer enrollee.

Since Woodiel is gone, I am good with basically having just blocking TE's and going with 4 wide sets most of the time. Our TE's have had 1,500 yards in Mario's 4 years here. About 1,000 yards in Dawson's 3 years. He just doesn't use them. Make SJ a blocking TE. Then I would be ok with bringing coach Pata back as the TE coach.

Lofton isn't a legit Y but he's a more than solid H-Back with a pretty high ceiling as a receiver. Luka Gilbert should be ready to contribute and has the build of a true Y.

Isn't the walk on Ruskavich a pretty good blocker? You need guys like that who can bust heads. Maybe you leak him out in 22P or 23P for a GL play/2 point conversion.

Diabolical to me that we spread IU out with 3 WRs and Bauman. Zero reason that should happen when we're in obvious passing downs.

I think it's painfully obvious to even the most casual observer that he's not a blocking TE either.

Playing the season in 10P is a great way to get your QB killed. You don't need Antonio Gates but you need a Y that can block and is at least a credible threat to go out on short and intermediate pass routes.

Hunter Cantwell is expected to start at RT. He has crazy power and strength but his feet are still gonna be a bit of a liability against top edge rushers. You need to have a Y to chip the edge or just present the 3 man blocking surface to widen out the edge (puts him farther from the QB).

Also....even with Mensah being a stud Mark Fletcher isn't coming back to be a bit piece of the offense. With a line made up of guys like Cantwell, Okunlola, Matthew McCoy, who's the next Center? Polynesian kid right?.....running the ball consistently out of 10P just isn't practical. We need to be able to go 11P, 12P, 21P to maximize a stud RB like Fletcher. Gilbert and Ruskavich would make a nice 12P set and you could even go 13/22P with Lofton functioning as an H-Back.

We did it last year with McCormick at times on 3rd and +. Yeah absolutely with Arroyo but when we’d trot Cam out there I never understood it. Just like this year with Bauman.

By spreading the TE out you are basically in 10 either way. May as well have a competent pass catcher out there. That or JoJo.
