Phil Steele's Defense Rankings

I like it! With our offense and special teams hopefully taking a step forward, that will help the D out as well.

Hope they live up to it and prove it on the field.

It is nice to read that they are predicted to be that good though. Especially with so many people on the board apparently concerned with our secondary and run defense.

With our defense last year if he had a punter we would have won 9-10 games.

We never were able to flip field position and make things easier for our terrible offense.

This year I expect the offense to hold its own and therefore with this defense make a big run.

What I would really love to see is someone emerge as a dominate pass rusher. Joe Jackson was a beast but he wasn’t a dominate pass rusher. Hence why he wasn’t drafted higher.

If someone emerges as a guy you have to double team all of a sudden more of those blitz we want to run get open runs or a 1 on 1 for our best guy.

Hill is that dude.

If Garvin is better like I suspect, this will happen.

Looking at our Charmin soft schedule, no team should score more than 28 points on us. UF and FSU have talent but huge questions on offense. And if our offense and ST do their job, we can easily be top 5.

I have no doubts the potential is there for a defense being that good. If the offense steps up to even top 25 Canes could be undefeated regular season. . No I am not predicting this. Just my gut feelings of what could be thisseason if coaching staff lives up to the hype.

I'm bullish on this defense too. Between Nesta, Ford, Bethel, Miller and Nnoruka, that should be a very formidable front. Combine those with our DE's Garvin, Rousseau, Patchan and Hill, we got the basis for a top caliber defense.

If you don’t think this defense is gonna be absolutely nasty this year, you’re a moron, naive, or both.

I still hold my position that it’ll take a small step back from last year, but from the outside, it may actually look even better just because I expect the help from the offense and punter to be infinitely better.

Enjoy the defense this year, fellas. They’re gonna be fun.

Not only that but I strongly believe we’ll see the TO chain more this season than last, actually putting us in Top 5 nationally when the season is over. I think Baker is going to absolutely love having a squad full of studs from the front to the back that is going to pay huge dividends particularly as you stated - having a solid punter and an offense that will give the defense not only rest, but points. I’m very much looking forward to this year, we’re going to surprise a good many people that are down on the Canes

The thread is over 2 hours deep but it has less than 10 post. I wonder why. Had Phil ranked us as the 40th best defense, there would have been over 100 post in less than an hour with idiots pumping there chest about how "terrible" our defense will be this year. A respected football mind/prognosticator gives us a very positive review, and the thread is f'ucking crickets. Why am I not surprised? We are going to put a **** good defensive product on the field this year!
I agree with you. I have always respected Steele, he said the same thing about us last year, hoping he is on the money this year.

We need our secondary to prove they are the same caliber without JJ and MJ, then I’m a buyer.
Agreed. However, we go thru this every couple of years not knowing what the next guy up is going to do. I remember Redwine at CB and Jackson at CB wondering if either would ever see the field. It looked like Jackson would never see PT until he had is breakout Spring and Fall camp prior to his junior year and Redwine bloomed when he moved to Safety.

We have recruited well. I think we'll have a really good secondary with Bandy, Blades, Hall, Ivey, Carter, Smith, and Bolden. We have a lot of good players. They just don't have experience. Just hope Rumph and Banda have them ready for game 1 against UF.

Looking at the depth has me excited!!!! We are solid 2-deep at every position. Could be 3-deep at DE with Harvey and Williams. DT will have at least 5 in the rotation. Martin needs to step up and make it 6 solid at DT. Having McCloud as a backup WLB is much better for the team than having him as a backup Striker to Finley. The wildcard is going to be Joyner and Jennings. If they are unable to play, we could be one injury away from seeing our true freshman get a lot of playing time at LB.

Not worried.

Played three true fresh simultaneously in 2016.

Had our best defense in years.

Every time I had a concern about the defense since Manny has arrived, it has been overcome, often times spectacularly.

I have learned not to doubt the defense based on experience.

Number two? Man, that is a stretch with a ton of unproven talent potentially.

Funny how this board swings though. Last year or the year before, you all were up in arms about him. Now he's the goods apparently.

All I can say is Phil Steele

just give this unit an offense that can give them room to breathe by consistently scoring 31 -35 points and just flipping the field more often, and this unit will thrive. Just need some young DB's to grow up quickly
