Per FS - Linebackers.

Remember that time we had three true freshmen starting at LB the year after Golden got fired and finished with a top 20 defense?

Had a lot of kids that are in the NFL now on that defense.

Corn, Colbert, Jenkins, Carter, Chad, RJ, Harris, Norton.....just off the top of my head. Quan and Redwine as sophomores. That defense had a ton of talent.

We are similarly talented up front and back four in 2020. Plus McCloud.

This season will make or break on Offense and to a degree in ST

I think it’s fair to say all of us are pulling for McCloud. However, I’m tired of hearing of the “athleticism” and “ceiling” he has as opposed to others. Maybe it takes a fifth year for him but I’m not holding my breath. At this point anything beyond a solid contribution for 2020 is a gift. There’s measurables and then there’s production on the field and let’s be honest, the production has not been there. Best of luck, rather have him than not, but anyone betting on him being a difference maker who produces beyond a 3rd day pick or UFA is quite lofty in expectation. God’s blessings to him and above all many thanks for being a Hurricane.

Don’t think we need to overreact to any of this. With striker a full time position now, we only have 2 LBs on the field at a time. McCloud will start at one spot and Joyner/Brooks/Huff probably at the other. Not sure what the situation is with Jennings/Steed but even beyond them I’m sure Brooks/Cave/Flagg will all be healthy by summer ball. That will put us 3 deep at each LB spot, even if Jennings/Steed never play again. If they do, that’s even more depth. Not saying this will be the depth chart, but hypothetically:

MLB: Joyner, RSo / Brooks, So / Flagg, Fr
OLB: McCloud, RSr / Huff, RFr / Cave, Fr
Striker: Frierson, RSo / Harrell, Fr

*could also move Amari Carter to striker if needed

I expect a certain level of myopic behavior but understand the LB outlook will need to be schemed around. A lack of development and personnel has landed us where we are. Jennings has bricks for feet, Steed is a football player who’s body has betrayed him, Brooks is limited in both size and experience, and Huff and the young bucks will be a trial through fire. The good news is we have 3 trial runs before getting to teams like MchSt and Pitt who will try to shove the ball down our throats. Carter and Frierson are going to be vital this year to fill the hybrid role.

As it has been for 4 years now. Often times more than fine. The question is, can a program located squarely in the most speed laden area of the world actually field an offense that can score more than 24 points per game?
Also can a perennial Top 15 defense get off the field on 3rd down or make stops when the games on the line??

If we’re going to get back to the top, we’re going to need to evaluate, recruit, and develop on an elite level. There’s no way around it. It’s in our DNA. We must get back to it.

With Bolden out and Avantae, Harrell, Balom not arriving until after spring I now believe that Carter will stay (and start, at least initially) at SS with Bolden coming off a major injury.

MLB: McCloud / Brooks / Flagg
OLB: Joyner / Huff / Cave
STR: Frierson / Smith / Washington
CB: Ivey / Williams / Dunson
CB: Blades / Couch / Clarke
SS: Carter / Bolden / Balom
FS: Hall / Williams / Harrell
