Much has been said about Mario’s teams and penalties. The numbers speak for themselves. It’s been year after year, at all of his stops.

Got me wondering how & why. Could it be random chance/variance? Or is it something Mario is teaching/not teaching?

I’m more talking about the pre-snap, procedural stuff. Not much you can do about stuff like unsportsmanlike, except try to drill restraint into their heads.

Why are there so many false starts from our OLmen?

Mario has a bad history with penalties:

2018- 42nd in penalty yards
2019- 111th in penalty yards (64 penalty yards per game)
2020- 62nd in penalty yards (only played 7 games)
2021- 107th in penalty yards
2022- 103rd
2023- 106th
2024-118th
2025- 110th

Penalties have been a problem since before Mario got here. Miami seems to always get called for every little thing yet they generally turn a blind eye to our opponents. Even watching other teams I see Taint, ND and UGA get away with a ton of stuff that we routinely get called for.

The body of evidence is too large to consider it random. A single season (or even 2) of penalty problems could be considered an aberration.

It most likely has to do with verbal communication, team preparation and disciplinary practices, but narrowing it down would require in-depth, direct comparisons between Mario and head coaches whose teams typically don’t struggle with penalties. Obviously such a birds-eye-view is impossible.

If we were a more dominant team, the penalties would matter a lot less. But we aren’t so when games are won on the margins, their impact gets magnified.

Guys are not being punished for committing selfish or dumb penalties. It's as simple as that.
This. Samson committed a big false start Friday and I assume he was right back out there. Should have been benched for the rest of the game.

Curious..how did Miami rank against Mario's teams in the years before he got here?

What was Miami ranked in 2018 - 2021?

I'm curious if it's just during Mario's tenure or if the program itself (regardless of the head coach) is consistently among the most penalized teams, which could suggest other factors at play.

There are false starts called in every game in the NFL each week. Yes it’s a dumb penalty. Yes there should be some sort of punitive action taken. Benched for the rest of the game? Why? Because Brockermeyer committed several other false starts in other games?
Maybe some of our players are just dumb.

This doesn’t explain the false starts on the OL. But for offensive holding or pass interference, bias seems to be a plausible answer I suppose.

I already used this meme once today, I thought it worked then, so it should probably work now. And Christmas is coming...

Most penalties are a lack of discipline. Especially unsportsmanlike. Do not throw the second shot.

Brock should have been pulled during the Florida game I think it was. Whatever game it was he was atrocious. Well Samson rotates with McCoy and with how big that false start ended up being they probably convert the 3rd and 2 and instead had to punt.

And then the announcers justify it by saying Miami just commits a lot of penalties. Yeah, so do the other teams, but they don't get called for them.

The older I get, the more rigged I see the sport. Rigged for gambling purposes. That, and TV ratings.
