Penalties- 17/159

No one said penalties are cool, but Did you see how he talked to Couch after that inexplicable late hit? Sure wasn’t all hot and bothered then. Where’s the energy he had with Kinchens in a meaningless point in the BCU game? What Couch did was so much worse than Kam celebrating after a crazy INT and Mario reacted the exact opposite. That’s upsetting.

He started to show how soft he is against A&M and the pressure building with the losses has only made it worse.
No offense (OK some offense), but determining how “tough” or “soft” a coach is by how he does or does not yell after a particular penalty is completely asinine and a very immature way of looking at it. I won’t go thru the multitude of reasons why a coach may or may not show outward reaction, but literally ZERO of the reasons are because he or the team is tough or soft. Being tough or soft has nothing to do with yelling at people on the sidelines.

You can make an argument that our OL doesn’t get enough push or we miss too many tackles or some such other argument for why you beleive UM is not tough enough, but please don’t make a childish argument about sideline demeanor of a coach. The Pittsburgh Steelers of the 1970’s were easily the toughest team in football for an entire decade and their coach, the great Chuck Knoll showed no emotion whatsoever during games. Either did Tom Landry and the Cowboys were also great. On the other hand, Dikta coached tough Bears teams in the 80’s and he screamed and yelled. Neither demeanor tells the story that fans think it does.

My assessment wasn’t based on just this weekend, but a string of events. It looked and felt like he coached scared in the A&M game. SOFT. That team didn’t deserve to be scared of.

The fact that he has tried to portray himself as this tough guy who will get onto a player, and did so with ease week 1 on Kam Kinchens after an INT and very mild celebration, but then didn’t do it to Couch in a pivotal moment in a close game where the other team has stolen all momentum and you’re in the midst of a 3 game losing streak- that’s fake tough guy energy. He should had Couch for dinner on that one and told him to kick rocks for the game based on how he behaved with Kam earlier. The precedence was set. What it looks like to me is that he’s started to realize the pressure of the job, things aren’t going as he planned, and now he’s caving and bending on his own actions. That’s soft. If anyone should stand tall and not change demeanor in the face of adversity it’s the HC. You wanna change something? Change your archaic offense or awful in game decision making. Not your overall attitude and demeanor because things are getting a bit tense.

I hope you are working about the pressure of the job. You may not be and that worries me, I would offer the possibility that it’s not so much the pressure of the job as Mario realizing that UM is farther away from being good than even he thought, and that if he doesn’t score big in recruiting this is a 5-6 year turn around as opposed to 2-3 years.

85 different personalities and 85 different ways you deal with each personalities. There is also a time. Bethune...you unload because stupide mistakes against them may be one thing but they come back to haunt you down the road. Tight game on the road with a team struggling unloading on a kid likely isnt going to get you the result you want. Some of these guys get yelled at and they will crumble. Some guys get yelled at and they understand why and say "got it."

You saw the clip of him at Oregon unload on that kid. Kid looked him in the eyes the whole time and then went out and made a play.

Mario knows all about what he has taken on and 6 games in he isnt crumbling.

Poorly coached team. Unfocused players. Simple.

For the ‘we need more talent’ crowd, then let’s move toward next year. This one is over…just hope MC is a magician and lands a top 8 class with countless transfers that are smarter, bigger and faster than some of ones on the team today…

Some of the penalties are on the biased refs but late hits OB, rag dolling opponents blatantly when making a tackle, numerous false starts etc are not. CFB is a game of inches. ACC games are typically determined by very thin margins. We have to rid the Canes of this penalty blight. It's an absolute killer.

It should totally be a mindset to play smart & not let your teammates and coaches down.

Maybe players should have to speak to the team and apologize if they commit a flagrant foul that was unwise. Maybe they should have to run stairs at Hard Rock countless times. In the future, we'll have enough depth that the coaches will be able to bench players that don't play smart football. We don't have that luxury now. However, if the team wants to win now the single easiest way to increase those odds is for each player to take accountability for their own actions, be a great teammate & exhibit great discipline while playing. //

Was Alabama poorly coached and Unfocused against Tenn this weekend?

This isn't a talent thing or even a coaching thing. Its an adjustment thing. These kids aren't soft or prima donnas, they're adjusting to all new leadership and a new system. The coaches are not dumb, they are adjusting to the kids as well. This team has been improving week by week as this process plays out.

Bama also had 17 penalties for 130 yards. Can’t say they’re poorly coached. If it happens week in and week out I’d agree but we were the least penalized team in the ACC. The amount of backups playing at the VT most definitely contributed. Game speed is a whole lot different than practice. What’s good is all these players are getting experience in our softest part of our schedule.
