Taking a look around some elite teams it seems like they put an emphasis on their special teams coordinator.

Urban Meyer coached specials himself.
Saban hired Jeff Banks, a dedicated STC with experience at Texas A&M, Virginia, UTEP etc dating back to the 90s.
Georgia's dedicated STC has experience as the head guy at Auburn for four years.
LSU's has STC experience with the Saints and three prior college stints dating back decades (ECU, UNLV, Illinois)
Clemson's STC/TE has experience in ST in the 90s with Alabama, and had recent experience as the STC in Duke and Maryland before being hired.

I think Hartley proved that you can't stick anyone at STC, and if they don't know what they're doing it could be disastrous.

A guy like Saban using a coaching spot for a dedicated special teams guy proves to me a technical/experienced ST coach can make a worthwhile difference.

Does Patke have any experience at all in specials? What evidence did Manny really have to conclude that he can turn things around with Patke?

Patke doesn’t deserve to be here, he just drippin’ with JAG juice

When are you guys going to realize that Miami is not OSU, BAMA, UGA, LSU, OR CLEMSON. Those teams have budgets deeper than the Mariana trench. They can hire 10 former coaching legends as advisers and still have ample money left. We have to make due with what we can afford.[/QUOTE]

If you want to change the narrative of the thread to the fact that we don’t have a coaching legend as STC, cool. I’m not really going to buy that $ is the reason we didn’t go with experience there. They’re not exactly the most expensive coaches

You need to understand the STC is a stepping stone position for everyone. All of the guys you referenced above have had down years as a STC coach. For example, Fountain at UGa was fired from Auburn (or "moved to an off field position") before he went to UGa. He left UGa after one season to go to MISS STATE and UGa came after Hartley. Hartley stayed here and UGa hired Fountain back. Banks is the one guy from that list that I think truly loves special teams and wants to stay a STC. The rest would move in a heart beat to OC or DC.
As for our Canes, Diaz is actually helping with MOST of our ST this season. He knows it needs fixed and is putting his hand on every move to ensure this. Dont believe me ask one of the specialist. Ask a reporter where he is during the specialist time at practice. He is there and VERY hands on. Stop stressing. Manny is handling it. Trust him.

Yeah I would love to see an emphasis placed on ST. Hopefully patke knows what he's doing.
Think about all ways it impacts the game. Great coverage & return units make an impact on field position every time they're on the field.

Excellent.

From what people in the know have reported, Patke is one of the more knowledgeable coaches on the staff as far as X’s and O’s are concerned. Hopefully that translates to our special teams play, but no matter what...we can’t get any worse than last year.

Who knows. He’s got a good kicker and his holder coming back so that’s a good start. Punting should be improved if we get 10% of what Headley is hyped to be. Shouldn’t be a lack of potential punt and kick returners.

I would say our personnel makes him look good as a STC except for the lack of LBs and DBs that we need for our coverage units. That may be the down fall of special teams but nothing Patke can do about it

I don’t expect Bolden to play much at Safety week 1 but if he can contribute on ST it could be just as huge for us in that game

Because it's easy to coach kids to do what Hester did. Well, except for the fact he is the only man on the planet that could do what he did.
Plus on specials you only need 11 return men. You don't need blockers or gunners or contain men or anything. You just need to be a great returner, and then you're an expert on anything. Why doesn't Ken Dorsey come back and coach the OL?
