Patke as STC

I'll hold judgement on Patke as he hasn't even had to have one of his units field a fair catch punt. I agree on the whole, it is very important as Hartley was a worse ST coach than Richt was as OC.

Plus on specials you only need 11 return men. You don't need blockers or gunners or contain men or anything. You just need to be a great returner, and then you're an expert on anything. Why doesn't Ken Dorsey come back and coach the OL?
Well, Art Kehoe would have been a better QB coach than Richt Jr, so you might be onto something.

Take away our awful punting the last two years and we go from terrible to mediocre in special teams. Punting will be better this year. Bubba will be a year older and presumably better. Coverage units could use some improvement i guess. Jt4 could be elite at punt returning this year

How does anyone here know how Patke has performed as a coach the last two years? Why would he be labeled a jag? His responsibility prior to this upcoming season has mainly been linebackers has it not? Apparently his bosses, especially Manny, are satisfied with his performance so far.

I’m not there day-to-day to evaluate his performance and neither are you.

Just wondering what criteria everyone here is using the shlt on the guy. Because I’ll tell you one thing, I couldn’t tell you if he’s done a good or bad job. But if you use linebacker performance, as your sole criteria, which would be the only criteria anyone here could hope to intelligently discuss, I would say it’s above beverage. But hey, that’s just me.

They don't have a ****** clue OCC about Patke or how he is as a Coach...

They're just being the typical overreacting CIS fans in the offseason.

Agreed. I’m not claiming to be an expert on his performance because I really don’t have the inputs, other than I guess LB performance. My sense is that the players are responsive, but really that’s just a guess.

I will say this, he’s got an opportunity to make himself look really really good with the bar being not that high with special-teams

Not sure who in the thread is over reacting or blasting Patke. If you're referring to me... i'm just a man looking for answers. If you have info on how Patke's coaching acumen lead to being the STC without experience, I'd appreciate if you passed it along.

I was the one who called Patke a JAG coach and I see your in agreement with other posters that I maybe premature with my assessment....so you can you please point to anything tangible Patke has done at Miami, Texas or Miss St

What answers are you looking for?

Why was Patke given the Special Teams coach job? Go ask Manny Diaz.

Sinister, I agree with you. I think we would all agree that the hope is Patke turns the ST into an awesome unit, but based on the track record thus far, that would be too big of an assumption.

On paper, and up until now Patke is absolutely a JAG and should not have his position when you compare him to other top 25 schools’ staffs.

He was a middle manager at an oil rig and then coached at a Christian school equivalent of a juco before latching onto Manny. Plus he has no recruiting toes to SFL and it’s not like he’s cleaning up in Texas.

All that said, I hope it works out for him, but on paper, Alabama and Clemson have GAs on their staff with a better resumes than Patke

Can you point to a lack of performance?

Otherwise I’ll go with the judgement of people whose continued employment and livelihood depends on his performance.

He assisted a lot on special teams in the past so it's not completely new to him. He works his *** off and the players respect him a lot so I think he can get the job done on specials. And for those who think he's a jag, I'll put money down that he becomes a P5 DC within the next 10 years.

I will defer to Mr. Pfenny who was actually there.

I will put money down with you. These fools just post **** and talk out their ***. He will be a DC for sure within the next 10yrs.

Personally, I believe special teams reflects the health of your roster. IMO you need run and hit guys. Safeties, RBs, linebackers, CB, TEs and maybe and DE here or there. When the roster is healthy you can also afford to play a few front line guys on certain units because you are confident in 2nd teamers in case of injury. In regards to Patke, any judgment on his coaching ability is so premature. Manny likes him a lot obviously
