Pate on Miami vs. ND

I've said this a few times but it bears repeating.....ND played THREE road games last year. The entire season. Three. One was against Purdue, who was the worst P4 team in America.

The other two were A&M and USC.

The A&M game was tied at the 2 minute warning. ND did have the ball near the redzone, so they were in control, but it was a 13-13 game at the 2 minute warning. Very, very close game.

The USC game, ND was outgained by over 100 yards, 557 to 436. USC had 29 first downs to ND's 23. The game was 35-28, ND, and USC had the ball, 1st and 10 on the ND 21 with 4 minutes left. Very, very winnable for USC. They threw back to back pick sixes and lost by 14.

So ND played 2 halfway decent teams on the road last year, and were in dogfights with them until the very end. They did lose at home to Northern Illinois.

Let's see how they perform on the road with a QB who has never played before.
They played in 4 true road games. You left out Georgia Tech - who we lost to. And 6 neutral site games. That’s 10 games outside of their home field. So I think the lack of road experience is slightly overplayed here but I get your point to an extent. They struggled with decent teams in big environments. Kyle Field is insane, but I think the Rock on Sunday night, with the Orange and Green lined up across from them, with a first time starter at qb is gonna be a tough spot for them. Canes should get the dub

*EDIT* my bad, just realized GT was in Mercedes Benz, even though it’s in Atlanta that’s “neutral site”. So you’re right, 3 proper road games. Which is actually kind of insane.

Valid stuff

I don’t want another Dawson debate senselessly but as much as I like him I thought we started to play into other teams game plans a couple times last year. I didn’t like that.

Notre Dame will probably want this game to be ugly. We could win an ugly game sure but I would rather see us dictate the style of play than respond to theirs
Our defense, or lack of, dictated the style of game we had to play on offense. Dawson, Cam, everyone on the offense knew that the only way they were going to win games was to score every possession and that sometimes led to hyper aggression. It’s much easier to take the checkdown or throw the ball away when you’re confident the defense can get you the ball back. If every punt turns into an automatic 7 points for the opponent, you HAVE to press on offense and it can make you predictable and easier to defend.

I actually think we’re on a great upwards trajectory as far as the premier team to go see. I don’t see a Mario team ever falling below 8 wins again. The dolphins are dysfunctional and no one believes in them. The Heat don’t have a star. The Marlins are, well it’s baseball so who cares.

Canes will be the hottest team in the city for the foreseeable future.
Well, there are the Panthers,.. wait it’s Hockey, who cares. Well,.. maybe if they make it a 3peat😹

Yes this was the case the majority of the time. There were some times the other team tried to slow the game down and I remember our playcalling kind of mirrored what the other team was doing.

We had that whole 2nd quarter swoon thing going on and I’m not saying that’s the exact reason for it, but it happens enough and you start to look at why

Majority of the time it was the “hurry up” defense though of course

The Marlins model is not built around trying to win championships. It’s just to be as profitable as possible. Thats anathema to a fanbase. They’ll never be more than a curiosity under that system.

ND has recruited and developed very well in the last few years, so stem to stern they are comparably talented to us and might even arguably have a slight edge (arguably). But, the matchups definitely advantage us. The only way we don't win this game (all things being equal) is if we are 2- on TO's.

Outside of that, because of the matchups, we really should win this and then when you toss in the Hard Rock, all the more so, we should get the W.

But...ND has a very good coaching staff and are very talented, so...we shall see...
The only thing that gives me pause is lack of continuity. New quarterback. New wide receivers. Almost entirely new secondary. New defensive coordinator. There seems opportunities for mistakes. That said, I favor Miami.

Yup. And 1 was Purdue.

Not sure I've ever seen a season where a team plays 3 road games.

Then in the playoffs it was a home game then neutral site bowl games that are corporate and boring. They beat Pedo State at Hard Rock in the semis.......uhhhhh, that ain't the Hard Rock you're gonna see Sunday.

Stomping on the OB was different, the vibration. The way the noise was everywhere. Hard Rock is nice but The OB was a wild atomosphere!
I've been to every home game UM /Dolphins since 79 at the OB and the Rock. The 2017 game was one of the loudest/craziest nights I've ever seen. Sounds like you didn't go to the 2017 game or else you would realize what's coming. Now don't get me wrong when the old lady would sway and the stomping vibration was on it was epic but it was so loud that night(2017) i couldn't hear my brother yelling to me and he was right next to me. LOL

All good points.

i did go, but the OB is the GOAT

He moved fsu to 7th cause they smoked the team he picked to win the national championship
Did he really pick Bama to win the whole thing?
New QB, they lost 4 games last year, still a new-ish coach, sec schedule?

I usually get his takes, but that was a bad one.

Agreed. Thought it was odd f him to pick them. I think he thought Milroe was not a good fit for their new system and the new QB would be better.
