Tyrone Chambers, a DT from Brush, could be one of those late-blooming Ohio prospects: Ohio State football recruiting
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There was nothing out of the ordinary about Tyrone Chambers' visit to Ohio State for the 38-0 win over Hawaii on Saturday.
The Brush defensive tackle went into the recruiting room, stood on the sidelines before the game and spoke with cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs. You know, the usual game day recruiting experience.
* Urban Meyer concerned Ohio State's national recruiting presence leaving Ohio 'ripe for the picking'
"The visit was amazing," Chambers told Northeast Ohio Media Group on Sunday. "I had an incredible time at the game. The atmosphere was insane, and it was just an all-around good visit."
It doesn't take much to impress a Northeast Ohio prospect. Like most of the other in-state recruits, Chambers said Ohio State is his dream school. That's not uncommon. But the 6-foot-5, 325-pound junior doesn't have an Ohio State offer. He has ones from Akron, Bowling Green and Toledo, which is typical considering late-blooming prospects often first hear from schools in the MAC.
There's a chance that Chambers, though unrated on 247Sports' site, could be very coveted by the time his junior season ends. There are a lot of late-bloomers in Ohio high school football, and this is the situation that Urban Meyer fears.
Because Ohio State is recruiting so well and putting classes together so fast, there's a chance they may not have room for a guy like Chambers if it takes him a while to hit his peak. Ohio State, though, is still keeping close tabs on Chambers, wanting to make sure they have a continuing relationship as he progresses.
"I probably get 15 letters a week from Ohio State," Chambers said. "They don't call much, but I get a lot of e-mails from (player personnel director) Mark Pantoni. I've been to Ohio State about 15 times, but this trip was amazing."
Guess who else is recruiting Chambers? Michigan State.
Though Chambers doesn't have a visit planned to East Lansing, he's trying to take a trip to watch the Spartans play. He also thinks that he's going to be in Columbus for Ohio State's game with Michigan State in November, a matchup that could feature college football's best two teams.
It's not a surprise that Michigan State is in on Chambers. The defensive tackle is the perfect prospect the Spartans like to take out of Ohio, those who may escape Ohio State's grasp because of numbers issues.
Ohio State, though, likely could get Chambers if they want him.
"An Ohio State offer would mean the world to me, being from Ohio," Chambers said. "They said it's up to me, so I'm trying to have a big year and keep working hard. That's what's important."
