OSU is notorious for running a lot of concepts that are 1-read or half-field at best. Haskins threw pretty much nothing but crossers at OSU.
Fields has thrown more diverse routes but has a lot of separate issues. Processing and pocket movement is the big bugaboo for him. He's very slow to react when his initial read is taken away or a coverage shifts post-snap. He's athletic but he doesn't have the footwork to slide and reshuffle in the pocket.
He just stands like a statue and gets enveloped by the rush. He also doesn't have pinpoint accuracy which is something that can reveal itself in the NFL, like with Baker Mayfield who many praised for his (myth) accuracy at OU.
Fields can have success in an RPO spread pass game where reads are defined and he's kept protected but I wouldn't wanna trust him for 19-20 games in a season where there will be adverse situations that turn him into a pumpkin. Yes he has physical talent and he works hard and he's a good kid but he's not Josh Allen. Josh Allen was a wild stallion at Wyoming who just needed to tone down the reckless plays and gain experience. Fields' intangibles are what they are, and the same is true for Kyler Murray or Carson Wentz who have similar issues with processing speed and pocket management (while the media blames Kingsbury/Pederson for designing offenses that caters to their QB limitations).
My QB rankings are:
1. Lawrence - has minor flaws but don't overthink it
2. Lance - stud in a wide zone play action offense, could struggle a bit otherwise
3. Wilson - looks like the real deal but pressure is a huge unknown. Could be Mahomes lite or a mega bust idk
4. Fields
5. Mac Jones - limited arm talent but like his aggression and poise
6. backup and developmental types
fwiw I'd take any of the top 3 if I'm the Dolphins
