High School Football Team Is So Big, Others Won't Play
Rivals are forfeiting against Archbishop Murphy in Washington state

Can a high school football team be considered too good to take the field?

Archbishop Murphy seems to have that problem as they can't get anyone to come out and play them lately.

After winning its first three games by a combined score of 170-0, the catholic high school located in Washington state has seen three consecutive games forfeited as opponents won't play the school, citing safety reasons.

The latest team is bail is Granite Falls High School, forfeiting its game scheduled for Friday.

"We made a decision based on the health and welfare of our kids. And that's really what it comes to. That's our first priority," Granite Falls athletic director Joey Johnson said in a statement.

From KING 5 news in Seattle:

"It's not that we're afraid to play the game, it's an injury issue," Granite Falls coach Tim Dennis told KING 5 news.

"My son is 5'8" and weighs 117 pounds and just got out of middle school and just turned 14," a Granite Falls mom told a community meeting this week. "They've got 18-year-old players [who] are 6'5" and weigh 330 pounds. I mean, that's like putting a Volkswagen Bug against a Mack truck."

"That your Friday game has been forfeited, to me doesn't really ring true to what we're trying to teach our young adults here," said Jerry Jensen, Archbishop Murphy's head football coach
"This is their opportunity to face adversity, power through it, and it will serve them well in their life," Jensen said.

From CBS News:

One reason the players at Archbishop Murphy are so big is because as a private school, it can recruit players from around the region while public schools cannot. The growing call around the league is for Archbishop Murphy to play in a higher division.
Players like lineman Jackson Yost, who is 6 feet 3 inches and 265 pounds, just want to play.

"We can't focus on what other schools do and we just have to focus on what we need to do so we can prepare for the next upcoming game," Yost said.

The question is if Yost and his Archbishop teammates will get a "next game" to play or have another opponent forfeit.

Soft of on the same topic, I just saw a volunteer coach of 4-7th graders got "fired" for making a kid run laps after he bullied a teammate. so a coach is no longer allowed to punish players by having them run. Pussification complete.

All I know is a Gainesvile High School is playing this Saturday in Gainesville while UF cancelled their game.

Seems like the poossies are at the university level to me.

At first I thought it was some pvssy ****. But after I read the story, I changed my mind. Unlike college, private schools have the advantage over public high schools. The private school can send buses up to 50 miles away to pick up kids bigger and more athletic than the public schools kids they're playing against. They can recruit while the public school can't. The private schools can also feed them much better than the public schools and provide a better education. A lot of these players come from underserved communities and their parents will jump on an opportunity like that in a heart beat.

It doesn't happen here in south Florida so much because there are so many good players that the public schools can manage to stay competitive. But look at St Thomas Aquinas, you can't tell me they don't have an advantage over most public schools in south Florida.

While some of y'all focus on the schools forfeiting, I'm curious to know why Archbishop doesn't just move up to play better competition. And if it's an enrollment issue, they could still just play better/bigger teams, instead of running through whatever conference they are in.

I know there was a local high school basketball team that was LOADED with NCAA D1 talent (I'm talking 2 of those kids went on to be NBA players), but they played in a smaller division and conference. Everyone knew they would dominate their conference, so the school and conference allowed that team to make their own schedule while those kids were in high school. They could win state titles, but they didn't play other teams in their conference because it was a waste of time. And when those kids graduated, that school went back into normal conference play.

So, that coach talking about "overcoming adversity" doesn't sound legit, to me. Take your team to play better comp. At minimum, just play bigger schools, who might be a better size match.

I think those outside the STA (or other similar schools like them) bubble have a few misconceptions.

- STA has had a focus on athletic excellence for decades...long before M Irvin in the mid 80s
- STA does not bus in students from 50 miles away...not even close...have there been a few from south PB/north Dade yes..but not near what people think
- Enablers to STA "recruiting" are two-fold...1) the D1P5 and NFL placement of alumni is without peer...and 2) they are as much, or more, and academic powerhouse as much as athletics...it could be argued STA is one of..if not THE top prep school in FL..and quite possibly the southeast
- STA is the recepient of well-heeled donors...not surprising considering a majority of the "top 1%" economically in Broward send their kids to STA (AH, Pinecrest, Gibbons, as well to.be sure)
- The athletes dont have a special nutrition program outside other students (like in D1P5)...they do probably have the best S&C program though in SoFl
- How many NFLrs coach at other programs? That doesnt make u a great coach, but it does add "cachet"

Anyways, STA has had supporters and haters for decades...some truth behind the rumors...but more so perception doesnt match reality...

It's Washington State so the capable football players all going to that one school. Tell them instead of beating up on chumps, go to a rival school and create some competition. I say they scared of comp and that's why they all go to one school.

STA recruits like crazy and their players go to school for free. That isnt a misconception. Its just the truth

...STA recruits like crazy and their players go to school for free. That isnt a misconception. Its just the truth

Absolutely true they recruit like crazy...said as much above...

STA players do not go to school "for free" in any greater amount than the non-football student body...they all have the same "case by case" basis for reduced tuition...

Bellevue and skyline have that team
Play them

Exactly, I don't blame people for finding this in poor taste. A real coaching staff wouldn't want to load up on garbage, because your kids aren't learning anything. You'd think they would have petitioned the state sanctioning body to move up in classification. When you can recruit, while the local school has to take what is in the neighborhood, it does create an unfair advantage, hence why I'm in favor of Private Schools either playing in the highest classification, regardless of school size, or being grouped together in their own separate league.

Weight classes are present in combat sports for a reason.

The story above sounds like a private school with proper sized players playing against the bottom of the barrel. Why should the parents send their kids to the slaughter? That's foolish. It has nothing to do with being a *****. Go tell Mayweather he's a ***** for not fighting heavyweights.

I can see one of the biggest problems is that the school plays in 2A classification in Washington which is student enrollment of 472 to 990 kids an with population being sparse in that part of country I am sure they are playing a lot schools that just barely make the 2A qualification or 1A even possibly 2B. I think the private schools if they recruit and offer scholarships should be moved to higher classifications.

Lol come on man. I went to Columbus who some people use the same line about and its ridiculous

Its not reduced tuition to football players. Its just calling it something else because you cant call it athletic scholarships

The same people criticizing HS teams for forfeiting will criticize FCS teams for scheduling FBS schools.

Archbishop Murray needs to play equal competition.
