Sure, but if something crazy happens then Michigan has less time to capitalize. What if TCU fumbles a snap for example? Or if Dykes goes crazy and calls a pass play that goes incomplete? By letting the first down go without using a timeout then you've lost time. Hypotheticals, unlikely, but possible.
