OT: Rap Fans

Easy E sucked as a rapper. Lol. That was all Ice Cube. But he was influential. He could’ve been much bigger, but chose the short money over the long money.
You done gone too far now, cuh.

Eazy was a phenomenal rapper. Yeah he ain't write his lyrics, but that voice, the flow and that delivery was and is iconic. He was all execution, much like Dre. There was an effectiveness in his simplicity.

Real Muthaphickkin Gz is a Top 10 dis record.

I don't hate on no one for chasing paper. That boy is paid and gets trim like a ****. He probably could care less with what the hood gots to say...

No one is hating him for getting paper. He is doing what he knows and its working for him, but he 100% cares what the hood says. Otherwise he wouldn't be trying to get clout from guys like Ar-Ab and signing guys like Baka. Constantly talking about how many shooters he has and his "gangster schit". And trying to play down how rich his neighborhood was growing up. He wants people to think he is an OG.

Then he's f'd. He reminds of the kid who would fetch BK for us while we manned the trap...

Eazy had a smooth delivery, but come on doggy....you ain't putting him in your top 10. Not rappers. Performer? Absolutely. But Eazy wasn't spitting bars, my g. And I'm from the Hub bruh. We love Eazy despite what side of the track he from. BUT, no one is going to mistake Eazy as a lyricist. lol.

I guess I think we need to define what we mean by rapper, bc that could be wide net. We talking lyrics? **** no. You said Top 10? I wouldn't even put Eazy in the Top 100 lyrically. lol

But Execution? Style? Delivery? Longevity? Storytelling? Influence? Eazy gotta be up there when all of the above are taken into account. Still not Top 10, but he's on the first page.

This gets me thinking about some great lyricists who don't have any of the other qualities that make a great rapper. Somebody like AZ (the NY contingent lighting their torches at that statement).

NY is definitely blazing the torches. Lol. Eazy has his own lane, man. He’s a true WC legend. What I appreciate about him is he would be the first to tell you he wasn’t no lyricist, but he learned how to deliver, which made him a performer. Plus, he had street cred, where even bloods were messing w him.

AZ, Pharoah Monch, Talib Kwali, Jay Electronica, King Los....man it’s a lot of great lyricist out there, but to your point they missing those other qualities. It’s a hard balance man. Fine line.

Different times, my brotha.
So let me educate you a bit about how the industry works:

Drake came at a time during social media, streaming, and he signed to one of the hottest labels out there. Plus, there was a buzz about that one kid who was on a teen-fare show, “Degrassi”, and people where intrigued could dude really rap. No cap, Drake’s first mix tape was one of the best I’ve heard, but had this been in the 90’s, would he have the same affinity as he does now? Probably not, b/c no one heard mix tapes unless u was from that area.

Biggie had a stupid dope mix tape, but many on the West Coast didn’t know chit about Biggie until “Big Poppa” first came out on the radio via a record label. For Drake, it was different b/c the world of music became smaller via social media and streaming.

No one knew who The Fugees were. They come through an upstart label named Ruffhouse. ****, Lauryn Hill was boo’d off stage at the Apollo. The Fugees didn’t have the machine behind them like Drake, and Lauryn fell off the deep end, but real hip hop fans have been craving and wanting her return for a while.

OutKast was barely known outside The South until their hit album “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik“ but didn’t get real recognition until they dropped “Stankonia” under LaFace records. Andre didn’t want to be commercialized, and Speakerboxx/The Love Below featured the Andre 3000 post Erykah Badu.

My point is, the aforementioned great artist came during a time w/o stream, w/o hype beast (I mean, u had to look at The Source Magazine to see who was recommended as hot.) Drake is a talent, no doubt, but his star was pushed to outter limits b/c he was associated with thee hottest performer which was Wayne, and thee hottest new record label, Young Money. Does anyone think Nicki Minaj is better than Lil Kim? Nope! But Nicki benefited from the same hype beast.

I’m not saying Drake is weak, by any means. He has great concerts. But calling him a GOAT is a far stretch. No hip hop artist, I’m not talking about rappers, b/c there’s a huge difference; but no hip hop artist has him their top 10.

IM A HIP HOP HEAD JUST AS MUCH AS CANE FAN. I LISTEN TO EVERYTHING

Respect my guy. Man, real talk u shouting out Mozzy put in a different category in my book. Mozzy slid through the turf and my little homies made sure he was real comfortable in the hub. I had just missed him as I was coming back to Compton & he was moving back up North. But I saw the music video edits they shot and he’s a real one.

This my turf right here w some on my youngins. Mom’s house is like maybe 5-6 houses from where this was filmed at.
